Only one girl will win the cash prize...and a chance at love with Jeremy Bane. Monet isn't just another lust-struck teenager trying to win the heart of Rock God Jeremy Bane--she needs the prize money from his new reality show to cure her illness. Monet has Fluxem, a contagious disease that’s spread through saliva. It's completely curable if you have enough money, which she and her single mother don’t. Now that she's on the show, Monet has to work harder to keep her Fluxem hidden. She only has to keep the secret long enough to woo Jeremy Bane so he picks her as the winner. She doesn’t even care about the love part; the prize alone will change her life.
But the real Jeremy Bane is nothing like she imagined. Monet finds herself fighting against feelings that make her want to give in to her attraction and Jeremy’s attempts for a kiss. The further she goes in the competition, the more impossible it becomes to resist him--and when the producers turn the tables and start digging up dirt on the contestants, Monet fears her secret will be revealed before she's ready and ruin everything.
The only way to win Jeremy's heart is to tell him the truth, but confessing her disease could cost her the competition, the prize money, and him.

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—A dystopian novel in which governments have become broken and corporations rule. Overpopulation and pollution have turned the world into very dismal place where most humans are forced to live in impossibly small quarters, and clean air and water are luxuries of the wealthy. Monet O'Neal lives with her single mother in a tiny apartment in Boston. At the age of 15, Monet gets sick with the potentially deadly disease, Fluxem. The illness is curable, but only for those who can afford the extremely expensive antidote. In a desperate attempt to earn money to save her own life, and maybe even find love, Monet enters a contest to win a date with a rock star and $30,000. Gagnon adeptly creates a future that may not be too different from our own. The characters are engaging and well developed and the novel has the fixtures of many dystopian romances. VERDICT A must-read for those who enjoyed Kiera Cass's "The Selection" series (HarperCollins) and Lauren McLaughlin's Scored (Random, 2011).—Ellen Fitzgerald, White Oak Library District, Lockport, IL
Review "A Dystopian future + a Bachelor-esque reality show = a sly yet heartfelt love story that will have you tearing through the pages to see how it all ends." -Heather Lyons, author of the Fateseries
About the Author Sarah Gagnon grew up in the frigid woods of Maine amidst snow and animal skins and has now moved back home. As a small child she wrote ship-wrecked romances all while being stared down by a taxidermied duck. She has a BFA in photography and a minor in writing from the University of Southern Maine. She's the mother of two tiny, feral children and two ill-behaved dogs. For fun she's taken up construction and interior design. Her first project: moving into a dilapidated farmhouse with her computer-genius husband.

I thoroughly enjoyed this guilty pleasure of a book. It combines a lot of things that I enjoy - a rock star love interest, an underdog protagonist, and a reality TV competition (I can't watch them, but I love to read about them). Think The Selection minus the annoying love triangle and the reluctant participant, and you have the main idea of this book. Monet needs to win the competition because she has a disease but no money to cure it. Getting to date a rockstar she genuinely admires is a bonus, but her priority is paying for a cure. Monet is a character I could get behind. She doesn't have money or material advantages that the other contestants have, but she is down to Earth and someone readers can cheer for. Jeremy, the rockstar, is also someone readers will like. He didn't blow me away, and most of the things that are designed to make him attractive are examples of simple human decency, but he is a suitable if generic love interest. The other contestants range from crazy to crazier, and I enjoyed the inevitable cattiness and drama. The book takes place in a future that seems pretty bleak, which I didn't really expect from the premise. It added a subtle but thoughtful commentary on ecological, economic, and social issues. The book moved quickly and had a satisfying conclusion. It isn't great literature, but it was fun to read. I finished it in a few hours and it was one I read straight through. I think that many of my high school students will enjoy this escape read, especially those who enjoyed The Selection. It is going on my classroom library wish list. Language and situations are appropriate for grades 9+.

By thecovercontessa I want to thank Spencer Hill Press for providing me with a copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.I have recently come across a series of books about rockstars and every day girls. I love it. So when I read the blurb for this, I knew it would be right up my alley. I grew up in the 80s and rockstars were everywhere. And of course I fangirled, A LOT. So I love to read about stuff like this!Monet lives in a world where the poor don't get anything. And being infected with a disease that is easily cured, for a large sum of money, she would do anything to win a contest with rock G-d Jeremy Bane. It helps that she loves his music. She's determined to win so she can be cured and keep her mother from having to work so hard for the money. But the competition is fierce. Monet is s simple girl. Unlike the other girls in the competition, she never tries to be more than she is. And it seems that is attractive to Bane since she makes the cut.Jeremy would prefer to not be in the spotlight, since he spends so much of his life there. But given the chance to participate in a contest that will help raise money for a good cause, he jumps at the chance. All the while he just wants to lead a more simple life, maybe even go to college. And he's sick of girls throwing themselves at him because he's famous. Then he meets Monet. Down to earth and with no fuss about her, he's immediately attracted to her. And even though he needs to go through with the competition, he wants more than anything to have this kind of normal in his life.I liked the idea of the plot. It reminded me of watching the show The Bachelor. At the same time, I was reminded of American Idol, since the audience got to participate in picking the girl of Jeremy's dreams. Who doesn't love some reality television, right? So this concept really seemed to hit home with me. I think most who read this will connect with the idea of the competition. There is a ton of drama, almost Jerry Springer-like, during the story.I will say that the dystopian part of the story was a bit confusing for me. I didn't pay too much attention to it, since the story really did seem to focus on the romantic aspect of what was going on. But I do wish I knew more of the world, that it was expanded and I could understand the depth of Monet's plight and the world she lives in.Overall the story was enjoyable. A different mix of romance with a futuristic aspect that you can see affecting the characters. A nice combination of twists and turns that will lead you to an interesting conclusion.

Entertaining and unique By The Tale Temptress More a 3.5 than a 3.Thank you to Spencer Hill Press for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was, and wasn't, what I was expecting. This was sort of a Kiera Cass The Selection mingled with The Bachelor TV show and then mingled with that movie Win a Date With Tad Hamilton. And then throw in the fact that it's a dystopian, and this book was very, very different.I loved Monet as a character right off the bat. First, I love the name Monet for a girl. And the fact that she's artistic just screamed irony. Aside from that, I just loved her character. She was sweet and innocent in a way, but then also strong and brave. She's had to grow up brave. Living in the poor neighborhood in a new world where being poor isn't supported by government, and no help is ever offered, is a tough scenario to live in. Plus, she has Fluxem, a dreaded disease which you must buy a cure for. So this reality show to date a rockstar seems like the answer she's looking for in order to win money for a cure. The fact that she received this disease by being jumped by some people who had it made me feel so badly for her, and yet she's not a whiner. She trained to protect herself. I love this about her. She was down to earth.Jeremy wasn't what I expected either. He wasn't the bad boy rockstar I expected but actually had a heart. He was sweet, gentle, and soulful. I love that his personality meshed so well with Monet's from the beginning and that they had a real connection. This story was well told, with a fast paced rhythm and an inventive reality tv format surrounding it that was unique to anything that plays on today's television shows. There were definitely some twists and turns in here that I didn't expect, and it made the story even more interesting. It is a standalone, which I found so refreshing, and I just enjoyed reading it. I pretty much finished it in one sitting. This world they live in is a sad thing to see, especially considering the fact that I can totally see our country going in this direction in the near future. You could picture this type of world all too easily. The book was very entertaining.
