"The Necessity of Atheism" is a treatise on atheism by the English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, printed in 1811 by C. and W. Phillips in Worthing while Shelley was a student at University College, Oxford. A copy of the first version was sent as a short tract signed enigmatically to all heads of Oxford colleges at the University. At that time the content was so shocking to the authorities that he was "rusticated" (expelled from the University) for refusing to deny authorship, together with his friend and fellow student, Thomas Jefferson Hogg. A revised and expanded version was printed in 1813. Shelley's early profession of atheism in this tract not only led to his expulsion from Oxford but also branded him as a radical agitator and thinker, setting an early pattern of marginalisation and ostracism from the intellectual and political circles of his time. Though Shelley's poetry and prose output remained steady throughout his life, most publishers and journals declined to publish his work for fear of being arrested themselves for blasphemy or sedition. Shelley did not live to see success and influence in his time, although these reach down to the present day not only in literature, but in major movements in social and political thought.

THE FAMED POET'S EARLY ESSAYS ON ATHEISM, AND AGAINST CHRISTIANITY By Steven H Propp Shelley's publication of "The Necessity of Atheism"---or rather, his refusal to repudiate it---resulted in his explusion from Oxford, and later in a falling-out with his father. In the Essay on Christianity, he observes, "Jesus Christ would hardly have cited, as an example of all that is gentle and beneficent and compassionate, a Being who shall deliberately scheme to inflict on a large portion of the human race tortures indescribably intense and indefinitely protracted; who shall inflict them, too, without any mistake as to the true nature of pain---without any view to future good---merely because it is just."In The Necessity of Atheism, he argues, "It is urged that man knows... that whatever is not eternal must have had a cause. When this reasoning is applied to the universe, it is necessary to prove that it was created: until that is clearly demonstrated we may reasonably suppose that it has endured from all eternity. We must prove design before we can infer a designer... it is easier to suppose that the universe has existed from all eternity than to conceive a being beyond its limits capable of creating it..." He adds, "this God is himself founded only on the authority of a few men who pretend to know him, and to come in his name and announce him on earth. A God made by man undoubtedly has need of man to make himself known to man."He further states, "The all-powerful, should he not have more convincing means by which to show himself to man than these ridiculous metamorphoses, these pretended incarnations, which are attested by writers so little in agreement among themselves?... could he not convince the human mind in an instant of the things he wished to make known to it?.. No one would then be able to doubt the existence of God, of his clear will, or his visible intentions."In his essay, "A Refutation of Deism," he says, "The supposition that God has never supernaturally revealed his will to man at any other period than the original creation of the human race, necessarily involves a compromise of his benevolence. It assumes that he withheld from mankind a benefit which it was in his power to confer. That he suffered his creatures to remain in ignorance of truths essential to their happiness and salvation." He adds sarcastically, "I will admit that one prediction of Jesus Christ has been indisputably fulfilled. 'I come not to bring peace upon earth, but a sword.' [Mt 10:34] Christianity indeed has equalled Judaism in the atrocities, and exceeded it in the extent of its desolation."These essays are of interest not just to those studying Shelley, but also to rationalists, skeptics, freethinkers, and atheists.

A brilliant mind chooses science over religion--logical proof over blind faith By Gary W Fandel A great essay from a brilliant, critically thinking young mind during very difficult times in human history. If only the evangelicals and fundamentalists of this new century could think independently and critically beyond the pulpit and Fox News of today. A short essay in courage and light.

The Devil You Know, by Trish Doller

From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—Cadie, 18, lives in a tiny Floridian town with her widowed dad and kid brother. She's spent the last couple years pining for an adventure to take her away from her boring home. When two cute cousins, Matt and Noah, show up at a campfire party, Cadie is so strongly attracted to Noah that it thrills and scares her. The next day, the guys invite her and her old friend to join them on their road trip. Even though they're not much more than strangers, Cadie just can't say no. What the teen thought was going to be a sexy and temporary getaway slowly turns out to be a dangerous, terrifying, and deadly experience. Doller gives readers a smart, strong, yet wounded lead in Cadie. Although her decisions put her in an incredible dangerous situation, her choices don't seem anything but natural. The spark between Noah and Cadie is delicious, and the slow build of darkness throughout the story is the kind of terrifying that teens will enjoy. Fans of Stolen by Lucy Christopher (Scholastic, 2010) should be sure to put Devil on their to-read list. VERDICT This dark thriller features a strong female lead and a heap of sexy; a must-buy for readers looking for a healthy dose of drama.—Emily Moore, Camden County Library System, NJ

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. 2 Stars By Book Flame I haven't read a lot of thrillers this year so when I saw Trish Doller had one out I said why not, but sadly I did not care for The Devil You Know, mainly because of the main protagonist Cadie, I found her to be incredibly naive. It amazed me of how many bad decisions she kept making one after the other after the other. I just wanted to reach into those pages and smack some sense into her.Cadie's mother died of cancer and soon after she found herself raising her little brother which caused her to have to give up her boyfriend and soccer. She pretty much decides she is tired of playing the role of an adult when her father is still around and decided to let loose except it was to the extreme, she decides to go all out on a road trip with two complete strangers. At one point I felt the book started to focus a little too much on the relationship between Noah and Arcadia instead of the actual plot. As far as who the murderer was, it was so obvious I was just shaking my head on how predictable it all was.Overall The Devil You Know just wasn't for me, it started off alright but the further I read the more pissed off I became towards Cadie. There were warning signs all over the place, but she was just too stupid to see it.

Review for The Devil You Know by Trish Doller By Alyssa ***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blogThe Devil You Know by Trish DollerPublisher: Bloomsbury KidsPublication Date: June 2, 2015Rating: 3 starsSource: ARC sent by the publisherSummary (from Goodreads):Eighteen-year-old Arcadia wants adventure. But what starts out as a fun, sexy journey quickly becomes dangerous when she discovers that one of them is not at all who he claims to be. One of them has deadly intentions.A road trip fling turns terrifying in this contemporary story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. What I Liked:I feel like this book was good, or could have been better, but it didn't leave up to its fullest potential. I'm not sure what it proved, in the end. This book was too short for me to be satisfied, but not in terms of the story, but in terms of the character development. I feel like this book could have been more developed, and at least one hundred pages longer in story. I thought it was a good story, but it could have been better. Not my favorite of Doller's books, but I'm glad I read it.Cadie wants to have fun, but she's tied down by responsibility. She works and goes to school (sounds like yours truly, except in college - bigger bills), but has to take care of her four-year-old brother because her father just doesn't do the fathering thing anymore. Her mother died from pancreatic cancer, and her father hasn't been able to move on. When Cadie goes out one Friday night (for the first time in forever), she meets handsome cousins. They agree to go on a road-trip for the next few days, totally spontaneous, with strangers. But the trip turns dangerous and deadly very quickly, and Cadie doesn't know how to trust or where to go.So many three-star reads lately! This week, I challenged myself to read all contemporary novels. Monday through Friday, five contemporary novels. So far, three of the five of them have received a 3-star rating. But I have high hopes for the remaining two. I had high hopes for this one too! I loved Doller's Something Like Normal and Where the Stars Still Shine. This one didn't impress me.I definitely could connect with Cadie on a certain level - I feel the same way that she does. Bogged down with responsibilities and obligations, especially financially, to your education and your family. Never having fun, never having time to have a serious committed relationship. I understand her desire to get out, to be spontaneous, to live a little.Cadie goes a little too far, in my opinion. She meets Matt, and thinks he's cute. Then she meets his cousin Noah, and the two of them hit it off immediately. She goes too far when she agrees to go on the road-trip with him and Matt (they're not from the area, just passing through). Tell me who does that?! With random strangers?! More on that later. The story itself is very intriguing and creepy! Holy crap, I was totally creeped out at multiple parts of this book. Job well done, Doller. The psychological thriller part of this book is well written! In general, Doller is an amazing writer. I personally think there should have been more to this book, but the structure was good. The ending is expected, in my opinion, and things wrap up way too fast. See below! What I Did Not Like:Woah this book was short. This bothered me because the story could have been so much more! I felt like an element of the story was missing. I couldn't say what should have been added and whatnot, but this book felt way too short. Not in the omg-I-need-to-read-more way, but in the where-is-the-rest-of-this-it-doesn't-make-sense way.Well, the story flowed and made sense. But I felt like the story did not live up to its fullest potential. There could have been more, another layer to the story, more creepy strikes from the killer. Instead, this story came off as a bit cliche, because it was a very basic story. If that makes sense. I feel like I've read this story before... because this one felt like the skeleton of something bigger and more developed.I didn't really connect with either male protagonist. There really is only one - Noah - but I connected with neither him nor Matt. I expected to at least connect with Noah, to be rooting for him or something, but I didn't really feel much towards him. I mean, I guess he's an attractive and totally swoon-worthy love interest, but that is really all that he is.The background of Matt and Noah didn't really impress me or shock me. I just didn't care at that point. I raised an eyebrow and was like, really? Okay. I don't know what I was expecting but I wasn't impressed by what I got.The murder and the creepy stuff was very creepy and chilling. At the same time, they seemed very random and not coordinated? Meaning, the acts seemed scattered and not well linked together. I guess this could be a good thing or a bad thing, but I didn't really like it.The romance was... weird. I think I liked it? I have no idea. I'm all for feminism and the empowerment of a woman's decisions when it comes to intimacy and partners and whatnot, but I don't necessarily agree with Cadie's actions. I personally don't hook up with strangers, or take things further with a person I've known for a day or two, but that's me. Not trying to say she's wrong, but I wouldn't do those things.I don't really understand the point of this book. What did Cadie learn? Is she satisfied from her adventure time? Has she learned to be more cautious? Or to take even more risks, after this experience? What changed for Cadie? I don't understand the character development. And then the ending itself - it was predictable, but then it wrapped it so quickly! There was one event that was SO coincidental, I totally squinted at the book in irritation. Also I didn't really get a feel for the aftermath of the climax, like Doller felt the need to end the story as fast as possible, in five pages. Unnecessary, as this book is like, 250 pages long (i.e. very short). I think nearly a year passes after the climax, in the last chapter, and I didn't really pick up on this. Why does so much time have to pass? The climax just happened. So I had issues with the book. It didn't feel complete, though I could see that this is a great story. I know Doller can do better!Would I Recommend It:Eh, no. Three stars is okay but I'd recommend Doller's first book, Something Like Normal or Where the Stars Still Shine, before recommending this one. I like how Doller incorporates mental and emotional trauma and issues in her books, but I wasn't impressed by this book. I'll still be reading any of Doller's books in the future, of course!Rating:3 stars. Another three-star read - I feel like nearly all of my last two or three weeks of books have been three star reads. Hopefully tomorrow's read - another contemporary - will be better! I have high hopes for Gina Ciocca's Last Year's Mistake.

She has been struggling in trying to be a teenager after her mother's death. She takes on a huge responsibility which has her questioning her future. she gave up her boyfriend, soccer, and social life. She meets a pair of guys where she later huts it off. She decides to spend the weekend hanging out with friends and rebelling. she would have never guessed that someone is out to get her. I loved the plot and he characters. the story takes you through some twists and unexpected turns. However I did wish the book was longer and gave more of an update into her future instead of a year later. strong writing and very strong characters. This is a must read.

Though he enjoyed it way too much for it to be a real punishment. I liked this story a lot, but it was very short. I miss the longer Keegan Kennedy books like Homecoming or Captivated.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. with love and care By Anne M Chappel I love to read small poetry books made with love and care. This is one. It is filled with rich language and challenging images. The poems somehow manage to inhabit a world of sensation beyond words. The words are but a conduit to another country. 'A hope might fall both ways if you forget to hold its hand'. These poems take chances with us; trust us to understand something deeper. 'Who dares to sit there unafraid/ upon the threshold of the heart?' There is something of Yeats in these poems and something of Dylan Thomas. There is a vision of nature that arrives in a fresh way. 'We will climb once more to Heaven/ upon that rainbowed arc of rope,'. For poetry lovers this is a delightful collection.

THIS IS A NEW EDITION OF THIS BOOK, FIRST RELEASED IN 2011. Tori Van Camp wakes one morning on a luxurious ocean liner where she's offered whatever a person might desire: food, clothes, recreation, and the companionship of congenial people. But Tori has no memory of booking a cruise. What she does have is a vivid recollection of being shot point blank in the chest. With the help of the stunningly handsome Mike and the unnervingly serene Nancy, Tori soon learns the purpose of her voyage. Still, she’s haunted by the image of the gun, the crack of the shot, and the malevolent face of the shooter. Who wanted the young personal secretary dead, and why? Determined to find out, Tori enlists the help of Seamus, an eccentric but shrewd detective. Together they leave the Afterlife and embark on an investigation unlike anything Tori ever thought possible. Death is all around, the future is uncertain, and if Tori doesn’t act quickly, two people she cares about in Grand Rapids, Michigan, are prime candidates for murder. First in the Dead Detective Series of paranormal mysteries

The Dead Detective Agency (The Dead Detective Mysteries), by Peg Herring

From the Author People often ask where the idea for the Dead Detective Series came from, and the honest answer is I don't know. This story formed in my mind all by itself, and once I "found" Seamus, I couldn't let him go with just one book. It all starts with wondering about what happens after we die, especially if we have questions about why it happened...and who might be to blame.

About the Author Peg Herring lives in northern Lower Michigan, where she and her husband garden for the benefit of local elk, deer, and rabbits. They enjoy traveling too, but not when the tomatoes are ready to eat.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great read By Kindle Fire Reader Loved this book. A young woman, Tori Van Camp, finds she is recently deceased and intends to find out why someone murdered her. She had lived a quiet life with no enemies, as far as she knew. She enlists the assistance of another person in her new deceased realm to investigate her murder, but Tori insists on accompanying the investigator to help. Going back to the world of the living as a ghost has its own perils, one of which she can only be an observer with limited ability to influence the thoughts of the living. I enjoyed the depiction of what happens to people after death and the author weaves in elements of the why and hows of ghost sightings and sounds. I could not put this book down, it was that good. The pace of the story was perfect!

Why or why not?It would not be my first choice for a paranormal or mystery. I found the story and performance just OK.If you’ve listened to books by Peg Herring before, how does this one compare?I haven't, this is the first Peg Herring book, audio or print, for me.What aspect of JoBe Cerny’s performance would you have changed?I know there are a lot of voices, especially male, so it was challenging, but I would have liked more definition between them. Carmen's Latin accent seemed a bit Irish at times as well. This may not be due to the narrator, but at times it sounded quite choppy with short pauses between words in the same sentence. If this book were a movie would you go see it?It would depend on the reviews.Any additional comments? My headline for the review states I find the title misleading. While there is a dead detective, Seamus, he doesn't have an agency nor does he play a substantial role in the story. What I found interesting was the variety of paths this story takes. First it's Tori and how she finds the afterlife. A cruise ship limbo was a nice touch. As a frequent cruise I can see it working. Then we follow Seamus and Tory on the trail to find out what happened to her. Then it switches more towards the two live police detectives and then we also get to follow two of the other characters. The non-dead characters had the more interesting story lines, especially the police detectives. The story seemed to stretch on a bit too long for the content and I never really cared about the characters perhaps because they weren't developed enough and the principal action being divided among 6 or more characters. While I have a kindle copy I purchased, the audiobook I reviewed was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of Audiobook Blast.

The premise is that after death one goes to a large ship (if one is deserving) and can remain there or go on into the light. But when there are questions and unfinished business, one can hire a detective to go back to find the answers. This story is about a woman who was shot and didn't know why. She "hires" a detective to get the answers but insists on going back with him to help find the answers. They move about by painfully jumping into bodies of those alive and related to the situation. The questions were answered but the story ended more abruptly than I would like. The detective will go on and solve other mysteries in other books by the author. It will be worthwhile reading further books in the series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting new series By Deirdre I was hooked after reading the sample. A family with six gay sons, all living in a huge walled off European styled home, with a beautiful garden are given an order by their father. "Get hitched! It's past time. Way past time. You're all too old to be bachelors! And give us grandkids! You have a year."The setting reminds me of a Wolf pack so I gave it a chance. Happily I was rewarded with an entertaining story. It isn't overly dramatic, more steadfast than anything. Yet I found myself wanting to see what would happen next. Getting to know each brother a little bit better. It was an unusual circumstance that led to the meeting between the MCs that occurred near the start of the story that is the thread that links the characters throughout at least the first two books in this series. Rescuing a mugged, frail, pregnant teenager brings the two businessmen together. Their attraction is strong and mutual.Their business acumen and being dedicated hard workers make them admire each other & make them want to try out a relationship. Their similarities keep them moving forward. This is a Siren book so expect it to be an erotic romance. When one of the MCs knock on the back door of the other you can be sure its not to his house. But otherwise you will find this to be a rather quiet story, that picks up at the end.I'm very glad I had the second book in the series to begin as soon as I finished this book since this story has a small cliffhanger regarding the pregnant teen. Speaking of owning the next story in this series, I actually purchased the next two, Number Two and Number Three from Siren Publishing, since I was too impatient to wait on Amazon to release them.Despite this being a nonshifter book/series, the similarities in setting, set up, having several gay sons storyline, and a tough dominant protagonist made this seem like a quieter shifter story. I imagine there will be some that see this story as a tad boring, but there are times when you want a tamer, yet entertaining book. For me this was it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fun read, a little disappointing By Christy Duke This was a fun read, although much too short. I didn't really get an opportunity to get to know Kai and Alan beyond the superficial, not to mention all the other members of the household. However, the one thing I really liked was how this big family took in Chris and essentially adopted her. A six month pregnant teenager whose family kicked her out, and the father of her child has spent considerable time ruining her reputation on social media....well, I'm rooting for Chris.
