But by the final page, she has done it again, and I found myself going back to where the clues were all along in that dialog. I'm not sure how this would read to me if I had not happily made the journey through all 15 books, but I can say that I really can't think of a character that has worn so well, believably, along with the cast of characters that have come and gone. Poor Akitada, Ms Parker does put him through the ringer (!), but has given him a life that seems more real with each book, which is the highest compliment I can pay to a writer of fiction!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A miserable time for Akitada By David Steuer This is a great addition to the series. Akitada has risen far in the world, but the hopeful conclusion to the previous volume has now dissolved into domestic strife and self doubt. While the core mystery is interesting, it is the disarray of the household that hold's the reader's attention.

Another intriguing novel of Mrs. Parker By Dirk Fujiwara Arihito, the brother of Akitada's new wife Yukiko, has fallen in love with a nice young lady. However, her father was a convicted murderer. Thus, she is socially quite unsuitable as a wife for a member of the most eminent Fujiwara family that in Heian Japan had occupied all positions of power in government and at the Imperial court. So, his father Kosehira, Sugawara Akitada's friend and father-in-law, has forbidden a marriage, and threatens to disinherit Arihito, if he does not obey. Loving her brother, Yukiko persuades Akitada, once to put family affairs over his professional duty, to leave his post as a provincial governor without permission, and to travel with her to the capital, in order to find a way to mend the rift between father and son, and to make the marriage possible. Akitada promptly falls afoul with his friend Kobe, superintendent of police, and, much worse, with his superiors including the prime minister - another Fujiwara, of course.Akitada solves the problem, and just along the way also another murder. However, the outcome is completely unexpected. There is great peril for his wife, and grave future sorrow for Akitada is guaranteed.Mrs. Parker's Akitada novels paint a picture of mediaval Japan, and certainly are addicting. I have been addicted for quite a time, now. I devoured this book. And I acquired the next one, as soon as it became available!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful and important story By Z. de Ruiter The protagonist is a teenager by the name of Lauren, who is starting at a new school after something bad has happened at her previous one. What exactly this is and whether she was the victim or cause of the reason both she and her sister were forced to make a new start is not revealed until the end of the novel and this cloud of mystery, which hangs over her past, added an intriguing element to what was already a hugely compelling book. From the opening pages, I felt invested in Lauren's story and rooted for her to succeed at making a fresh start at her new school. Simon Packham created an incredibly likeable character with her and one that teenagers nowadays undoubtedly can relate to; after all who hasn't ever tried to just blend in and not be noticed by their peers? Of course in Lauren's case there is a far more complicated reason for the way she acts, but regardless of the reason for the way she positions herself she's a great representative of today's complicated teenager. There was nothing I didn't love about the way this novel was build up; the mysterious flashbacks, the fact that Lauren's past was only ever alluded to, and the slow tension that build throughout up to its explosive conclusion, but I particularly loved her tentative friendship with Harry, which was such an incredibly moving and realistic storyline strand. The fact that she recognised him from her old life and the secrets she was trying to distance herself from added a touch of danger and excitement to them spending time together – after all, he could start remembering at any time and then her fresh start would've been for nothing. And when it was finally revealed what had happened to Lauren that made it so important for her to have that new beginning and hide her past it was such a heartbreaking revelation that I couldn't help but let the tears flow while I was reading this on the train into work. It made total sense within the context of the story but from the subtle hints sprinkled throughout it was an explanation I hadn't seen coming at all. I did have my suspicions about some other things, but I wasn't even close. Well played, Simon Packham, well played.I really can't say any more about the contents of Only We Know because the less you know the more exciting and rewarding your journey through Lauren's life will be. Just know that this is a beautiful and important story and one that every young adult and not-so-young adult should read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful and thoroughly engrossing! By ADITI SAHA “The best way of keeping a secret is to pretend there isn't one.”----Margaret Atwood, a Canadian authorSimon Packham, an English YA author, pens his latest YA book, Only We Know, that traces the story of a young teenage girl named Lauren, who moves to a new town with her parents and her younger sister, the only slight problem is that the whole family is trying to run as well as hide away from Lauren's little secret, so they all have to maintain a very low profile to not to attract any undue attention towards themselves. What is that secret?Synopsis:What is the secret of Lauren's past?Lauren's family have moved house very suddenly, and she and her sister Tilda have to go to a new school. Lauren's determined to reinvent herself, but she's panic-stricken when she sees Harry, who she knew a few years ago. Luckily Harry doesn't recognise her, and she knows she has to make sure it stays like that.Lauren, unlike Tilda, settles in well. She makes friends, is helping to organise the school fashion show, and has boys asking her out. But just as her life finally seems to be looking up she starts receiving macabre packages. When she gets a message: 'Isn't it time your new friends knew all about you?' she has to admit that someone knows her secret. But who - and what should she do?Lauren and her family moves in to a new town. Lauren and her family are actually running away from Lauren's secrets and is trying hard to keep it hidden from the new towns folks. Lauren settles in quite easily in her new school, whereas Tilda faces difficulty to accept her new school. Gradually Lauren becomes more accustomed to new new life and soon she meets a boy from her past which she is trying to bury it. And eventually when this perfect boy becomes a part of her love life, Lauren started to get some presents marking all the evil clues about her dirty little secret. Lauren is devastated and is on the verge of breaking down, and the revelation nearly kills her. Will Lauren be able to handle it? What is the secret that she is trying to bury it?The author's writing style is fantastic and since the whole book revolves around an untold secret, so right from the very begining, the story kept me engrossed till the very end to find out Lauren's secret. And trust me, your guessing won't work here, since the secret leaves my mouth agape with the gravity of it's darkness. And I really loved it how the author no remark about it all through the story. The prose is evocative and with an articulate and catchy and easy to comprehend with narrative style, the book falls in the category of must-read YA lists for this summer. The pace is really fast since it made me anticipate with lots of guesses to find out the secret that the author kept tightly wrapped under layers of confusion and fear. The characters sounds quite realistic enough to believe in them, especially the main character, Lauren, who acts brave on the outside but is actually a scared little kitten on the inside. Tilda sounds like a no-nonsense sister and this is one character with whom I can't relate much with, who annoys me with her don't care attitude towards her elder sister's fears. Lauren's parents are drawn with lots of realism and their demeanor is similar to any 15 year old daughter's parents, worried all the freaking time and nosy at all the times. Harry is another character who made me fall for him mainly because the way he treated Lauren with lots of respect, love and concern. There is also a lot of chemistry between Harry and Lauren, which is really sweet to read about and the author have painted those scenes with lots of compassion and cuteness. Lauren's demeanor towards her fear of her secret is vividly portrayed in this story, I mean I too have reacted in the similar way. The climax is really justified as I was constantly feeling that the mystery should better be good as the author kept me hanging in the loop till the end of last chapter and the mystery really satisfied me and according to me, it is worth the wait.Overall, this is an interesting story written poignantly that kept me engrossed till the very last page.Verdict: A must-read YA for the summers.

~Editor's Pick~ My husband has a secret. Desires he’s kept locked away in a deep, dark place. Determined to pry details of this forbidden longing, I had no idea how much this new side of him would turn me on. So when I met the object of his lust I couldn’t let it rest. Edward Mooreland was a force to be reckoned with, a man who fought for his country and what he wanted. But did he want me and my husband? Would I ever experience his passion let loose or would I remain on the sidelines, watching, waiting, hoping? One thing I knew, I wasn’t the type of girl to give in without a fight. I wanted to be part of the action too. More than part of it, I wanted to be in the goddamn middle of it with bells, whistles and fireworks when it all exploded. Yes…I wanted it all.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sexy satisfying menage romance! By V. Rundell of V's Reads I loved this contemporary erotic menage romance. (M/M/F and M/M and M/F/M)Coben spent the last year of his service in the Royal Air Force in a clandestine love affair with a fellow soldier, Edward. They had a passion that was exceptional, but Coben wanted out of the military and Edward was planning to move higher in the ranks into the SAS. They share a bittersweet goodbye, and vow to always love one another, even if they never see each other again.Five years passes, and Sian has married Coben. She's elated in her marriage, and thrilled to have such an attentive husband. They are adventurous in the bedroom (or wherever!) and openly discuss their fantasies, including the possibility of bringing a third into bed--as a treat. It's not a fully-formed idea, but Sian is intrigued by the possibility of having two men at once, and also, indulging Coben in his desire to be with a man--one fantasy he had previously confessed to.Sian meets Ed, a gorgeous military man, when he shows up at her tattoo parlor, and they hit it off. Then, he's a guest at a dinner party she and Coben attend. She can't shake the feeling that Coben and Ed are unsettled around each other. Her intuition is correct, and she begins to press Coben to interact with Ed--finding out their history together is a huge bonus. This is a super sexy, erotic menage romance that really satisfies. I loved how Edward and Coben were so caring toward each other and Sian. The sexytimes are delicious and kept me awake and reading long after bedtime. There was no jealousy, only affection and understanding. None of the players seemed to feel left out--they were all engaged throughout the story. Their unconventional romance was a treat to experience, and it's an HEA X 3.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Seriously sexy By Maud Mama I have been looking forward to reading this book for ages and boy it did not disappoint. With one of the sexiest prologues I have ever read, this book starts of with a bang. Edward & Corben are both military but have to keep their affair under the radar. Corben leaves his heart behind when he walks away from that life and Ed.Years later and Corben is happily married to Sian - they share everything - even their fantasies - including the thought of a threesome. Whilst at work, Sian is asked to ink a tall, dark stranger, who happens to be called Ed...With some sublime MM, MF & MMF scenes Lily just proves she is the queen of threesomes!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant. By Dee E If you want to have a glimpse into the narration of this story, I strongly suggest you read the blurb. I’ll admit I saw MMF and put my hand up to read this story without doing so. After finishing the book, I came back and read it and it is absolutely the voice of our heroine, Sian.A lot of people who enjoy MM stories do so to avoid heroines who are likely to drive the reader crazy. In fact, I’ve read a lot of MF books in which the heroine has driven me crazy. Thankfully that did not happen in this story. Sian has to be one of the most refreshing heroines I’ve encountered in an extremely long time. Although she calls a spade a spade, it was nice to be shown she also had some vulnerabilities. The prologue is off the charts hot and serves as an intro to the delicious characters, Ed and Coben, giving the reader a glimpse into their stolen moments while serving together in the military. From there we jump forward to the lives of Sian and Coben and through a chance meeting at a client’s home all three are thrown into the path of each other’s lives. Sian is a smart cookie and it doesn’t take her long to figure out the men have been more than friends in the past. I really like the way the couple deal with this, and then all three as a trio. Emotions run high but thankfully the story didn’t cross into convoluted drama for the sake of so-called driving the plot!I don’t want to divulge too much, as I’d hate to ruin a single moment of this story for potential reader. The epilogue is told from Ed’s point of view and finishes the story off perfectly. In short this story contained so many things I love in a good story. It went straight to my favorites shelf and I’ll shout out to all and sundry to read this book! Bear in mind, I’m a huge fan of FF erotic so for me to be jumping up and down about a MMF book with plenty of MM action is no small feat for an author to pull off.Contains – sexy military men, a no holds barred heroine, who is a tattooist to boot, a motorbike riding hero, MM action and hot three-way action. Sigh, be still my beating heart."**copy received in exchange for an honest review, via Lovebytes same sex book reviews***

She nods. I kiss her. No slow lean in, no feeling her out. No breathing close with our noses touching. I just tilt my head and swoop in. I catch her lips and press them full and flush with my own. So tough when I’m staring at a distance, so soft up close. It feels like I’m sharing my secret with a stranger. I’m soft inside, just like you, and I want sex. I don’t know why. Then I kiss her properly, but in reverse. First, I kiss her. Then, I pull back just far enough for our lips to brush. I touch her nose with mine and breathe in. I lean back to see her lips, then look up into her eyes. I mumble, light-headed with a thick tongue, “If you don’t want to do that, we don’t have to. We can just have midnight lunch and hang.” - - - - - - - - - - - Midnight Lunch is an erotic story about microwave omelets and falling in love at a Mini Mart after midnight. Jean is working the night shift, keeping her emotional cards close to her chest and her wants at arm's length. Surprisingly, she finds selling people coffee and junk food at night is making her softer not harder. When Maria drifts through the doors, Jean threatens to crumble completely. She loses her footing and finds out what she's really protecting under her tough exterior. This short story is 13,600 words.

By Jim Dunn In Swing Like You Don’t Care, Arnie Kozak notes that while we golfers train our bodies to be strong and flexible, most of us do very little “training” of our minds. And as anyone who has ever played the game knows, golf is a complex game of physical and mental skills.Kozak teaches us how to develop Mind Fitness, which, in its essence, creates an awareness of how the mind allows subjective feelings, images and self-talk to capture our attention, and distract us from the moment at hand. Developing this awareness allows us to train our minds to use positive thoughts and images in our preparation for each shot, and then to come into a clear mind and allow the feel of the swing to simply flow. The book also describes how many of us bring our egos to our game, and suffer from what Kozak calls the “disease of me”. An ego-orientation to the game focuses on perfection and winning. It makes us vulnerable when we inevitably hit bad shots, creating a need to protect our self-esteem and self-worth through anger, frustration and other emotional reactions.Compare this approach to what Kozak describes as a task-oriented golfer, who practices acceptance, and recognizes that “everything is perfect, and there is always room for improvement”. He points out that a task-orientation approach lessens expectations, which reduces negative reactions and emotions, allowing an evenness in our game to emerge that leads to continuous quality improvement. In the end, Kozak suggests it is self-acceptance, and the self-confidence that grows from it, that is the cure for both ego-oriented golf, and what allows the feel of our swing to emerge. If out self-esteem in on the line each time we stand over the ball, anxiety and fear can’t be far away, all of which will continue to infect our game. On the other hand, if we learn to use positive feelings and images as we commit to our pre-shot routine, and then find the clarity of mind to simply feel the flow of our swing, we will be on a path to a better and happier golf game (and perhaps, as Kozak suggests, a better and happier life!).Since reading the book, I have become aware of how my own expectations, driven by how I thought I “should” be able to play, negatively impacted my game. This awareness has opened an opportunity for me to consciously follow a more task-oriented path, with far fewer expectations and emotional attachments, and a lot more fun.

The countdown to college has begun. When Elizabeth receives her freshman-year roommate assignment at the beginning of summer, she shoots off an email to coordinate the basics: TV, microwave, mini-fridge. She can't wait to escape her New Jersey beach town, and her mom, and start life over in California. That first message comes as a surprise to Lauren in San Francisco; she had requested a single. But if Lauren's learned anything from being the oldest of six, it's that you can't always get what you want, especially when what you want is privacy.Soon the girls are e-mailing back and forth, sharing secrets even though they've never met. With childhood friendships and family relationships strained by change, it suddenly seems that the only people Elizabeth and Lauren can rely on are the complicated new boys in their lives...and each other. With humor and heart, Sara Zarr, National Book Award finalist for Story of a Girl, and Tara Altebrando, acclaimed author of The Pursuit of Happiness, join forces for a novel about that time after high school when everything feels like it's ending just as it's beginning.

Roomies, by Sara Zarr, Tara Altebrando

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up-Immediately upon receiving her roommate assignment from UC Berkeley, high school senior Elizabeth can't wait to "introduce" herself with a logistics-heavy email to Lauren. After all, Lauren lives in San Francisco, worlds away from Elizabeth's experience in suburban New Jersey. Unfortunately, Lauren does not receive the roommate assignment with the same enthusiasm. After years of sharing spaces with siblings at least a decade her junior, she bristles at Elizabeth's initial overtures, leading to a rocky start for this relationship. As the weeks pass and the girls share more personal information, the thawing process begins, then stalls, then begins again. By the end of the summer, a tenuous truce has each teen believing that this may work out after all. Zarr and Altebrando use alternating chapters and voices to weave together this tale of roommate matchmaking. The technique lends a tone of authenticity to the story while highlighting the perils of relationships based solely on electronic communications.-Colleen S. Banick, Westport Public Schools, CTα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journal. LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist In a classic two-voice YA novel, authors Zarr and Altebrando expose the excitement, uncertainties, and sheer terror high-school graduates experience as they face college. The premise—e-mails from the Berkeley housing director announcing roommate assignments—is a clever device for introducing EB (Elizabeth) and Lauren to each other and the reader. New Jersey native EB, or, as Lauren quickly dubs her, Ebb, is headed to California to study landscape architecture and escape her mother, who has become excessively irritating lately. Lauren, on the other hand, is staying close to home, although she alternately craves and fears the short distance dorm life will afford from her four young siblings and overly stressed parents. EB’s gay father, who disappeared from her life when she was five and now runs an art gallery in San Francisco, and Lauren’s black boyfriend add plot complexity and keep both girls off-balance. Authentic and drama filled, this novel offers reassurance to all teens who, regardless of destination, are facing the next chapter in their lives: leaving home. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Zarr, a National Book Award finalist for Story of a Girl (2007), and Altebrando are backed by a substantial marketing and publicity campaign that includes select author appearances and a blog tour. Grades 9-12. --Frances Bradburn

Off To College Summer Read By Book 'Em Danno Roomies is a story of two female high school graduates about to embark on their higher education journey by attending college in San Francisco, CA. Elizabeth (EB) is from New Jersey and Lauren (Lo) is from San Francisco, CA. They end up e-mailing each other as they are going to be dorm roommates in college.I was interested in the premise of the book as well as the storyline consisting of some e-mail communication as that's how many of us communicate these days. As much as I wanted to love it I found that the story dragged. There were a lot of issues touched upon - interracial dating, losing your virginity, single parenting, infideltiy, etc. - but I feel like the issues were just dangling out there and never meshed in a way that made you want to keep reading. The ending was blah and tied neatly in a bow which made me just say "really?". I can only recommend this book if you have absolutely nothing else to read. I don't recommend buying it but checking it out at the library.

It did not seem like my type of book. When I did pick it up I was pleasantly surprised. I overall liked this book even though it was full of drama. This book is a lot about moving on in life and I really liked that part of it. It had a really good way of explaining it. I would recommend this book to anyone who is graduating from middle school to high school or high school to college.

In Review: Roomies by Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando By Kim {kimberlyfaye reads} Nearly a year ago, I was ridiculously excited to get an invitation to claim a review copy of Roomies from NetGalley. Having had my share of drama with roommates over the years (and some very good roommate experiences, too), it really sounded like something I would enjoy. Somewhere along the way it got shoved aside. When I would think about going back to it, I'd look at the other reviews on Goodreads and shrug and move along to something else. I'm glad I finally decided to give it a shot this week. I thoroughly enjoyed it and, honestly, wouldn't mind a second book with these characters.Roomies is told in a very unconventional way – through both a series of emails and in first person with alternating perspectives of Elizabeth and Lauren. I can never get into books told solely through letters or poems. I get bored. I find myself skimming and then I lose the whole point of the book. That was never a problem here. I enjoyed watching as these girls tried to get to know each other through a series of emails and how they were handling their day-to-day life in their own thoughts.I honestly can't say that either Elizabeth or Lauren were particularly likable. Despite that, I was still able to connect with them in my own way. Each of these girls was struggling with aspects of their life. Elizabeth with her father abandoning her and her mother being a complete and total jerk. I seriously despised that lady. I could go on a three-paragraph rant about all that was wrong with her, but I won't. She also had some relationship issues and a potential budding new love that she would have to leave when they both went away to college. Lauren was dealing with never being alone or doing things for herself. She had five younger siblings that she cared for and that came with its own problems. Unlike Elizabeth, however, she had good parents. They were just stretched thin. She, too, had a budding romance and friendship issues.I thought the friendship they began building throughout the summer was the real thing. It had ups and downs, judgements and fights, communication issues and times they were really there for each other when no one in their current day-to-day life would understand what they were dealing with. I enjoyed watching them open up and test the waters with some "overshares." That's how you build a real friendship, after all. They may have had their differences, and there may have been some maturity in reaction to said differences, but it was realistic to me. It was just happening through email instead of face-to-face.I adored the love interests in this story. Both of the romances were sweet in that "first love" uncertain kind of way. They were good guys and, of course, in my ending, both couples manage to escape the pitfalls of a long distance relationship and live happily ever after. I know that might not be realistic, but a girl can dream, right?I won't spoil the ending for you, of course, but I do have to say that I'm not generally one who enjoys ambiguous endings. I like my standalone books to wrap up nicely at the end, with as few loose ends as possible. Don't make me write the ending of your book. All that said, there are times when an ambiguous ending isn't a bad thing, and Roomies is one of those times. I actually really liked it in this instance. Of course, that said, I would love to learn more about college Elizabeth and Lauren. I definitely think there's potential for more story there and I would happily read it.It's been a long time since I went off to college and dealt with the amount of unknowns that Elizabeth and Lauren did in this book. But, Roomies brought it all back and, even better, made me remember all the fun my Freshman year roommate (and floormates) and I had. Ah, the good ol' days. Not only was Roomies a great story, but it gave me a chance to look back fondly on some of my own roommates. And, uh, not so fondly on some of the others.I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

By MariaaM I absolutely loved this! This pulled at my heart strings; made me so emotional I just had to stop myself from finishing it so quickly. Nickayla takes not s*** from anyone, and it's refreshing to see that even after everything that has happened, she could still be strong despite it all. This was a page turner, beautifully written, and probably the best by far! This will make you cry, laugh, smile! I definitely recommend this book! :))) I'm so happy I had the chance to read this!

Review "If you're looking for the adventure of Harry Potter, the suspense of James Bond and the diversity and character of the X-men, then this is the book for you" - Amazon Reviewer"The well-constructed speech and story line keep you hooked throughout, the characters are well developed and are almost relatable on a personal level. And if you like to be able to literally see the story coming alive in your mind this is the book for you!" - Amazon Reviewer"Not since The Harry Potter or Divergent series have I found a book that draws me completely into its world. I am a few years older than the age group that this book is intended for yet I am hooked." - Amazon Reviewer"Full of believable, and entirely relatable characters, and a gripping storyline too boot" - Amazon Reviewer

About the Author At some point in Tim's childhood, he was abducted by aliens and sent on a voyage of knowledge and discovery across the universe. Eventually the aliens realised how pointless this was and, as a failed student, he was returned to Earth and left with a family who brought him up as a human bean. But, the persistent memories of new worlds, dragons and other creatures, continued to knock at his frontal lobe, desperately trying to break out. To avoid making a mess and calm his imagination, Tim began writing as a way to communicate with Earthlings. Fuelled by Chilli and Nachos and a bottle of wine, Tim manages to balance a love of loud rock music and fast cars (preferably red!) with emotional chic flicks, smart leather shoes and a well tailored suit. He has successfully infiltrated the humans and hides behind the façade known as a family. He learns from his children, but is regularly told to stop acting like a child by his wife. Naturally shy and unsociable by nature, he is selective of the human company he keeps, preferring to be around old books, bonsai and art. He cries at 'It’s a wonderful life' but sulks if fed evil vegetables disguised as Parsnips or Peas. He is bored by mundane conversation, excited by architecture and castles and fuelled by Caramel Latte Macchiato's. Occasionally, he likes to catch up with old acquaintances on Tatooine, Westeros, and Middle Earth, and stare at fantasy and concept art as if it is a window to his childhood adventures. He is always trying to learn lessons from the masters; Mr Charles Darwin and Mr Lionel Ritchie, about life and love. Tim's galactic mission is to translate his brain activity into a language that inspires and entertains you, transports you to different worlds and grants you an audience with the characters you have dreamt about, but never dared to remember. All of this in an attempt to redeem himself with his childhood alien abductors and travel the stars once more.

By Josh Cooper The Surge of the Red Plague is a book that is full of surprises and keeps you thinking about what will happen next. The plot is straightforward but you don't know exactly what will happen next. It is about a teenager named Louis who has an abnormal gift, lightning reflexes, and on his way home he finds a mysterious 8 sided coin in his pocket which is the start of his adventures.-This review was written by my 11 year old son, a huge Tim Flanagan fan.

He has been contacted by a mysterious person and is given a thick octagon shaped coin-like object called a Neòdisk that he needs to decipher. He was chosen because he has a gift. Once he deciphers the Neòdisk he finds himself inside the "Wickes, Wakefield and Lynch Institute for the Gifted" inside the London underground. From this point on I couldn't stop reading the book until I finished. I like the writing style of Tim Flanagan, this is the first book that I red from this author, but for sure is not my last one.

The New Savants: Surge of the Red Plague is a fun Young Adult novel (the first in a series) following a young superhuman (aka Savant) named Louis. The setting is very similar to our real life, with some secret scientific technologies that seem almost magical in their functions. I found the concept of the savants living in the background of a "normal" human society interesting. The government funded school setting feels like a practical training grounds for someone who would defend and protect a country from behind the scenes, something like a secret agent. There are definitely some similarities to Harry Potter and other Y.A. books where the main character attends a special/magical school. This could be taken as either a good or a bad thing, but regardless, I enjoyed the yarn that the author weaved and found myself more often than not, engrossed in his story. I especially liked that the locations were weaved into a realistic setting, instead of some magical location isolated from society as we know it.Early in the book, as Louis transitioned into the school life, I wasn't as glued to the story as I was in the very beginning (I really enjoyed the opening). This could partly be due to me reading at noisy airports, since I find it very hard to focus in these types of situations. However as Louis uncovered more of the main plot, the book picked up steam and kept me turning pages. I would also have liked to see a little more development of the students, there was a small transition point where I had a hard time distinguishing some of the secondary characters. As I got further into the story this was mostly addressed as the characters became more involved in the plot. My favorite parts of the book were about an arena type game that the students would compete in for fun. Some of these parts had me literally laughing out loud in public places, so I can definitively say I enjoyed them.I recommend reading the preview of the book available on Amazon. It is what convinced me to buy this book, and I am happy I did. The second book in the series is not yet released, and I am looking forward to seeing where the author brings the story next.

This unique ghost story, set above the polar circle in northern Norway, will take you into the mountain realm of eagles, and an angel. Michael, a disillusioned misfit from Florida, moves to Norway to begin a new life. With a teaching job at a college, he rents an old two-story log house on the shore of a fjord . . . and soon discovers that the upper floor is inhabited by the spirit of a young woman who died of consumption in 1917. Anna Sofia agrees to guide Michael, who has never seen snow in flat Florida, into the mountain wilderness which she loved as a girl. As they climb high above the timberline, as they bid farewell to the sun before months of winter darkness, as they skate on a mountain lake beneath the northern lights, and ski near a herd of reindeer, Anna Sofia leads Michael deeper into the wilderness, deeper into himself. The bitter boy is left behind; the clear-eyed man is emerging. Anna Sofia tells Michael that her dream is to stand on a mountain peak at midnight in June, when the summer sun will shine in the sky due north. But at that moment, she must leave him. He will lose the woman he deeply loves, and he will have to climb down that mountain alone. Michael will take with him, however, Anna Sofia’s final gift: a powerful purpose in his life, and the confidence that he can harness the sun . . . as he builds a far better future for today’s polluted Earth. This unique ebook contains 97 gorgeous photographs which follow the story chapter by chapter.

By Joleene Naylor I don't normally post bad reviews, but I feel the description to this book is very misleading.I picked this book up in a dollar store and was excited to start it. It begins well, Anna Sophia is an engaging character, the way she "reflects the light" is unique and interesting, and even Michael is pretty likable. Then, he starts to whine. At first it's about all the pollution - both physical and cultural - in Florida, his excuse for moving to Norway. I could deal with it as a motivator and a part of his character, unfortunately it never stops. From that point on the book is one long preach about how cars are polluting the planet, with a side of how television is evil and the implication that all of modern life is abysmal. Michael and Anna Sophia have the same conversation at least three times (I gave up reading it after the third round) in which she says "you're killing the earth! you should save it!" he says "Someone will" and she says "Why don't YOU?" Their constant "discussions" on the terrors of all mankind is at the expense of what COULD have been tender moments between the characters, until I didn't even care about the "love story" between them. Even their one and only Christmas together is a long whine about the horrors of jet planes, cars, deforestation, etc. etc. and from then on nearly every could-have-been touching moment is the same - Anna Sophia has a tirade about cars and Michael's narration is a long winded spiel on the "poison in the air" until I couldn't even stand Anna Sophia anymore and kept hoping she would evaporate.I will admit 100% that I would not have bought the book had the description inside presented it as being an ecology topic, which it doesn't. It makes it sound like a light romance and/or a "self discovery" type of story and alludes to angels (which I did not run into, excepting a brief passage where it appears Anna Sophia is "taken over" by one momentarily - though as I said, I gave up on reading it about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way through) Still, I don't object to a story with a point. The problem is this story makes the point and then makes the point and then makes the point and then KEEPS pounding it out over and over until it becomes a school lecture on ecology and saving the planet, rather than a novel. The writing style itself was pretty good. The descriptions were a little long, but I don't mind that, and the cultural information on Norway was interesting and seemed well researched, as were the photography scenes. (I gather from the author's bio that he has actually been to Norway) because of that, I might give another book by this author a shot, but only if it's on a different topic. Otherwise, I've had my fill of the "How can we go on pumping poison into our skies" lecture.

Multimillionaire businesswoman Grimsdottir Buchanan has escaped death thrice, as is evidenced by the ceiling fan which barely misses her head, the failing of her car's brakes, and the flattened bullet found on the lobby floor. As Henry Lyons probes deeper into the case, and as one murder follows another, not Grim's, but people around her, he realizes he is in a big game - bigger than he thought it was, bigger than he wanted it to be, and perhaps, too big to be solved? Well written, with a clean, clear linear style. Likable characters with good development, story and resolution. Plus, there are enjoyable and effective descriptions of colorful imagery. The author says (in the book) that it sits between Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter. I say it sits between Shrek and The Life of Pi. Recommended.
