Faith kept me Plain. Science made me complicated.

Book 3 in the Grounded Trilogy

Now that I'm a special agent for the rebellion, I can’t hide what I am anymore. I’m a Spark, genetically engineered to be electrokinetic. Along with my boyfriend Korwin, I am also the Liberty Party’s best hope of stopping Dr. Konrad and the Green Republic from developing a new generation of biological weapons.

When our mission to destroy Dr. Konrad’s work goes awry, the side effects of a brain-altering chemical in my system become problematic. It’s more important than ever that I protect the people I love. But the more I try to help, the more I seem cursed to hurt everyone around me.

The characters are richly developed and respond to circumstances as we would expect--except when they surprise us! It takes a talented mind to blend Amish, dystopian, and science fiction elements along with action and suspense, and Ching gets the job done.I love a good story, and this YA novel will appeal to more than just teens. Parents can read and discuss with their teens, since this story raises important questions about ethics and values.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful third book! By Kindle Owner What a read. The action and drama one would expect from a book in this series is definitely present here. Kept me on my toes. The character development is strong. I find myself genuinely rooting for these characters. A little Amish, dystopian, and paranormal are wound together in this book--truly unique to Ms. Ching's mind and her ability to create and deliver. And deliver she does. I don't normally like dystopians or anything resembling them, but Wired and the other books in this series are approachable to even a reader like me. Highly recommend to people looking for a different kind of read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent trilogy By Gwen Nicodemus This series was fantastic. The characters were ones, that if real, you'd like to be around instead of whiny, snotty brats. They used their brains, but were still young adults. The series showed growth for both of the main characters, but the growth was reasonable for the action and timeline. The ending was good in that it was happy but not perfect--there were consequences for the characters' actions. I'll definitely read more from this author.

Awesome collection of Paleo recipes By Kitty Smith I love to cook but sometimes when you're trying to stick to a particular diet it can get tough to come up with new dinner ideas that are both yummy AND fit your dietary needs. I've never regretted going Paleo but there are times when I'm staring in the fridge and completely lost for ideas.Emma Katie's "1001 Paleo Diet Recipes" is nothing short of amazing. First she takes you by the hand and walks you through the numerous benefits of going Paleo. I already know all of these but there are days when I'm fantasizing about some sugary, processed garbage that I need a gentle reminder like this. Then she outlines the foods you want to be eating, and the foods you want to avoid. Then comes the recipes. OMG! I could spend a year making all the breakfast recipes alone! I made the Coconut Apple Fritters and my husband was lucky to get any once I tasted one. There's soups and salads and stuffed chops and a million ways to Paleo up some chicken, plus a Paleo version of my all time favorite dish, Shrimp Pad Thai. So many of the recipes are a breeze to make, like Smoked Salmon Wrapped Asparagus. I've done bacon wrapped asparagus but smoked salmon? Yes please! And desserts? I'm going to blow them away this holiday season with some of these incredible looking, healthy, Paleo desserts. Giving this one two thumbs up!

By Jonathan Moore When I purchased this book, I had heard of the Paleo diet before but I had never really researched it very much so I knew next to nothing about what it actually was. After reading just the introduction of this book I was already provided with a wealth of information concerning this diet. The beginning of the book gives a simple explanation about the diet and helps you to easily understand exactly what it entails. After that you start getting into the recipes which are also really good. Not only are there a handful or even a hundred, but HUNDREDS of tasty recipes of dishes you can make when on this diet. If you thought that the Paleo diet was hard like all of the other diets, think again! With all the recipes provided here you are sure to find plenty of meals you can make that are both healthy and extremely delicious. Looking for something for breakfast, lunch or dinner? Well you won’t have to look much further than this book as they have got you covered! The recipes each have the serving size and the approximate prep time as well as easy to follow step by step instructions. The only thing I saw that could use a little touch up was that it did contain a few grammatical errors in the writing but other than that it is a great book. If you are looking to start living the Paleo lifestyle then I would definitely recommend adding this book to your library today!

By TFLReader We have been eating Paleo off and on for about a year and I actually bought this author's awesome cookbook last fall. We have been looking for some fresh recipes to try and are astounded at how many delicious recipes are included in this latest book - over 1,000! Not only does the author give some great info on the paleo diet, but there are recipes here for every meal of the day and they are all very well explained and easy to make. We have already made the breakfast sausage casserole and classic chicken roast and have a whole list of others that we can't wait to try. Awesome paleo cookbook!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. With her first story, Alyssa Von Synn already proves herself to be an accomplished storyteller By Sally Bend One of the most effective narrative techniques in erotic fiction is to open up with the good stuff, to show us the end-result of a slave’s training, and then to take the reader back to the beginning of the journey. Rather than ruin the surprise, it provides a sort of promise that all of our wildest fantasies will be realized. With Slave Life: Part I, Alyssa Von Synn puts that technique to good use. She moves the story backwards and forwards in time, contrasting the fall of an ordinary man who robs banks for a living, with the rise of a transsexual slave who services men for a living. Part of what makes it most effective is the way she uses a first-person narrator to drive home that contrast, with Nico referring to himself as one of the girls. In fact, for at least the first few chapters, we are left wondering just how much of a girl he has really become. The opening chapter on blowjob training is a fantastic opening, and the story has some definite highlights in the first half, but it is the eighth chapter where the story gets really interesting. It is there that the District Attorney brings up The Project – an attempt to “re-educate non-violent felons and cut down on illegal sex trafficking.” We already know that Nico is a part of it, of course, but it is always exciting to learn how (and why) such a man becomes trapped in such a life. Once we fully understand the situation, the last few chapters take on a whole different feel. With her first story, Alyssa Von Synn already proves herself to be an accomplished storyteller. She has a perfect sort of narrative flair, knows how to establish a character, and can really make a sex scene work. The final seven words are, perhaps, the most intriguing in the whole story, and I cannot wait to see what Part 2 brings.

Legends in England tell that in the 13th Century two unusual children were discovered near the village of Woolpit... a boy and a girl who were dressed strangely, didn't speak English, and had GREEN SKIN. Since that time, many authors have speculated that the Green Children of Woolpit were fairies, visitors from space, or lost children with an unusual disease. In this study by Garth Haslam you will find the first recorded accounts of the Green Children (as well as a newer false version of the story) and you will discover what can be learned from them!

Something very strange about this story is that it reads as folklore and it's way too short. If this did actually happen there should be way more detail and a lot more to say about where they came from and how they lived. You would also think that repeated attempts is not not constant attempts to find the cave would have been made until their death. They mentioned they could not find the cave where they came from so they gave up just like that. If in fact the people that took them in truly believed they where extraterrestrial you would think someone would have seriously documented it. Maybe I'm wrong about the attitude back in the day and people where like "oh, so your an alien. Ok cool, well here are some beans and let's learn some English. But wait! are you Christian ? yes? ok good no more questions needed. All we get are they live in dim light like dusk and they are green. Surely people of the day had more questions than that. They could have written a huge book on these kids and what they new about another land, planet, or dimension or whatever. Maybe someone can make up some of the gaps and make a scifi movie about it.

It's a very short book about an intriguing subject - unfortunately, since the incident occurred in the 12th century there is no way to verify the information - this incident was brought to light by an episode of "Ancient Aliens" from Season 8 entitled "The Other Earth"

Some days you appreciate the dead; others, you don’t dare think about them.” These are the words of Mona Lisa LaPierre, teen blues musician, also known as the girl who never smiles. When her out-of-touch parents send her to the New Hampshire boondocks to stay with Grumps, her reclusive grandfather, Mona is not exactly thrilled. She nevertheless slings her beloved guitar, Rosalita, over her shoulder, says goodbye to Beetle, the oblivious boy she adores and sets out to meet her destiny. Destiny pops up in various forms: a blonde bear name Marilynn with a fondness for bananas, a fellow musician named Del, and a green-flamed motorcycle that was last seen racing away from her high school the day a girl from her school named Mia Delaney disappeared eighteen years ago. Mona’s search for Mia’s murderer becomes a quest for identity, love, and meaning. She is guided along the way by Grumps and her dead Grandmother, Bilki, whose spirit speaks to her in moments of need. Mona’s amazing journey is enriched by Native American traditions, a passion for music and art, and her growing realization that to achieve what is most important in her life, she must sacrifice what she most loves. This is the first book in the Wabanaki Trilogy. Each of these books contains a terrestrial and a celestial mystery that helps Mona find her place in the universe.

Wabanaki Blues: Book 1 of The Wabanaki Trilogy, by Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel

Review "Mona Lisa LaPierre's academic parents are off to Russia for research, leaving Mona behind in a cabin deep in the woods of New England with her crotchety Mohegan Indian grandfather whom she barely knows. There is no electricity, her grandfather seems able to communicate with bears, and the lines between this world and the world of spirits are blurry to say the least. Mona passes the time wailing the blues on her trusty guitar Rosalita. As she bonds with her grandfather, she also begins to connect more deeply with the natural world and with both sides of her Native American heritage, Mohegan and Abenaki. This would be more than enough to process, both for Mona and for readers, but this summer after high school is also filled with a cold case murder mystery, budding romance, love triangles, dysfunctional parents, family secrets, death, and supernatural occururances..." (Kirkus Reviews)

About the Author Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel spent her childhood learning ancient stories and traditions from her Mohegan tribal elders. She currently serves as the Medicine Woman for the Mohegans and writes fiction and non-fiction about the extraordinary real world of the Native Americans of New England.

She is the daughter of a Native American mother, who has turned her back on tradition and her family. Mona’s father is older than her mother, is ignorant or oblivious to Mona’s needs, other than basic food and shelter. The teen retreats into her music. She is a talented guitarist and blues singer, writing her own music, drawing from her own experiences. These experiences include hearing her dead grandmother’s voice advising her and seeing a girl that was murdered years ago in her high school.Mona is shipped up to New Hampshire to stay in a cabin with her grandfather, appropriately named Grumps while her parents go to an archaeological dig in Russia. Not only does she miss her high school graduation, but Grumps lives off the grid. No cell phone, no electricity, no Beetle (a guy she would love to spend more time with) and no one to talk to except Grumps. This is not how Mona planned to spend the summer after her high school graduation.Things begin to look up for her when she meets Del, a guy her age. He plays in a band and asks her to jam with them, and surprisingly Grumps encourages them to hang out together. When she discovers he is the son of the dead girl that has been urging her to bring her killer to justice, Mona becomes obsessed with the case. And she might just be falling for Del.Danger lurks in the woods and in unlikely places that would normally be considered safe. Mona has angered people by uncovering long buried secrets. The deeper she digs the more help she needs from Grumps and her extended Native American family.Zobel created one of the most memorable characters I've read about in a long time. Mona develops from a snarky teen to a mature young woman over the course of this novel - but she still has rough edges. She learns about herself while digging into her family’s history and culture. This Young Adult Mystery was so much more than a “whodunit”. The mystery of the murder developed along with the characters, making Zobel’s novel fast paced and interesting. I loved the rich history and tradition that I learned along with Mona. This is the first book in a trilogy, and I can’t wait to read the next two books.Copyright © 2015 Laura HartmanDISCLOSURE OF MATERIAL CONNECTION: I have a material connection because I received a review copy that I can keep for consideration in preparing to write this content. It’s part coming of age and discovering who you are and where you’ve come from sort of book, and part mystery. The story is told in the first person through the main character Mona Lisa LaPierre, who is also known as the girl who never smiles. At the beginning of the story it’s easy to see why. She seems somewhat of a tortured soul whose parents leave her with her grandfather for the summer. What starts off as a negative thing for Mona, it does in fact become a turning point for her. It’s through her adventure there that she grows as a person, and the author did a wonderful job allowing us to be part of Mona’s journey.I really enjoyed learning about all the Native American traditions that the author weaved into the story. The dialogue is natural sounding and entertaining. One of my favorite characters in this story was Grumps, Mona’s grandfather. He too seemed to change and evolve over the span of this story. The pacing is fast and you find yourself turning the pages to find out what happens next. The mystery is draws you more as the story progresses.Overall, it’s a fine debut and I think young adults who are looking for something besides the usual dystopia novels, would find this a good pick.originally posted at long and short reviews

Love the idea, misses a little in delivery By WanderingNotLost When Mona's parents announce they'll be heading to Russia to study bears, Mona is shocked to learn she'll be spending the time with her granfather in remote New England woods. She is forced to miss graduation and the chance to get her crush, Beetle, to notice her before they part.Mona, the child of both Mohegan and Abenaki tribes, has a passion for blues. This passion and the voice of her grandmother Bilki keep her grounded as she goes on a journey to learn the truth about a young woman's disappearance and in reality, about herself.Zobel, being Native American herself, really paid tribute to her heritage. Instead of watering down Native traditions and stories, they took forefront in this novel. Zobel shares her traditions and writes them with such reverence and respect.I REALLY wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, too many story lines and crossing details made it hard to keep the different parts of the story straight. It's a genuine coming of age story told in an uncoventional way, which I appreciate. It just became very complex in a way that wasn't able to keep me engaged. Complex in the name of suspense is fantastic. This just fell short of that for me.

The Best Homemade Kids' Snacks on the Planet: More than 200 Healthy Homemade Snacks You and Your Kids Will Love, by Laura Fuentes

Review

"Fuentes (Best Homemade Kids' Lunches on the Planet) follows up with more than 200 snack recipes that are alternatives to the "expensive, processed box" kind. Complemented by color photos, the work offers a strategy that involves planning, buying in bulk, and having a well-stocked pantry. She advocates making big batches, prepping ahead, and freezing for time management. "Laura's tips" and "kitchen notes" are scattered throughout, providing more advice. Snacks range from red, white, and blue parfait (strawberries, blueberries, yogurt, and granola) to veggie dipping jars (hummus on the bottom of jar with raw veggies) to peaches and cream bread. One chapter features "reimagined classics" such as fresh fruit toaster pastries and homemade golden fishes. Recipes are also included for smoothies and frozen treats. A feedback chart at the back can be photocopied to allow readers to keep track of which recipes the kids liked. VERDICT Stocked with good ideas, these recipes will give families (not just the kids!) nutritional snacking options." - Library Journal

Fun ideas but not healthy everyday snacks for the most part - too much white flour and sugar By Gen of North Coast Gardening So, as the mother of the toddler who is occasionally particular and really likes to snack, I was super excited to read this book and get some new ideas to get me out of a snacktime rut. Unfortunately, the claim on the front of the cover that says "more than 200 healthy homemade snacks" is a little misleading, at least when it comes to the healthy part. While there are a number of great healthy snack ideas in here, I would say the majority of the really innovative ideas were things that were incredibly sweet or contain chocolate, such as berry chocolatey pizza, party mix containing as much maple syrup as it does nuts, homemade caramel corn, s'mores popcorn, trail mix with chocolate and marshmallows and graham crackers, marshmallow cream fluff, marshmallow cream filled chocolate cupcakes, homemade mint thins made with crackers covered with melted chocolate chips and peppermint extract, homemade pop tarts made from pie dough, and a HUGE number of things made from white flour, which I consider an occasional "treat" food rather than an everyday food. While most of the recipes were indeed exciting snacks that kids would probably like, I have to say that I will probably cut out the 20 or so recipes that I liked (she has some very exciting dips for kids including a number of hummuses, "magic" banana cookies with only 3 ingredients, energy bites, 'Ninja Turtle" nuggets, baked zucchini bites, and some fun variations on deviled eggs which I have seen before but it's nice to have in one place) and won't keep the book.I guess I'm just a little annoyed when books cater to the lowest common denominator health and flavor wise. Can kids not enjoy complex flavors? Do they really need white flour-based, sugar-laden snacks? What about vegetables and healthy proteins? My guy is almost two and he eats a wide variety of foods - there are very few things in this book I'd consider healthy fare for anyone in my family much less the one member who is still growing and needs nutrient-dense foods more than anyone.

By Jennifer Kyles I have Laura Fuentes' first book (Best Homemade Kids' Lunches) and I think I may even like this one better! It's going to be stained, dog-eared, and probably missing the back cover pretty soon. That's how I know it's a 5-star book :-)I have a husband, a 23 year old boy, and 4 year old twin boys living at home. A lot of food passes through this house and having healthy snacks and/or snack-meals ready to go can be a challenge. How many Goldfish can a kid eat? (well, a lot, but the better question is how many *should* a kid eat!). I generally avoid boxed snacks, but get into snack ruts. It's 4pm. Want a cheese stick? How about your 8th banana for the day? I think there's like a tablespoon of oatmeal in the fridge leftover from breakfast two days ago. There's got to be a better way, right? It turns out there is!This book is absolutely packed with healthy snack recipes. Seriously, I wondered at first how anyone could write a 240-page cookbook just about snacks. But when I opened it I was gobsmacked with the number and variety of recipes! So far I've made:maple cinnamon roasted chick peas p132greek deviled eggs p150elvis shake p183Pizza poppers p159All of them were hits. One of the twins didn't like the deviled eggs, but I was like, "whatever dude, more for me!" I was really dubious about whether the chick peas would go over well with the little ones (I knew the big folks would like them), but they loved them! They asked for the Elvis shake as a smoothie breakfast two days in a row. The pizza poppers were super simple to make and the whole batch disappeared in about 10 minutes. Next time I'm going to make a triple batch so I can have a bunch in the freezer. My 23 year old knows that no Totino's Pizza Rolls shall cross my threshold, so he was pretty interested in the idea of the pizza poppers. The poppers are NOT like those. They are more of a savory muffin and are not supposed to be a homemade version of the Totino's. But big son admitted that having a much healthier option was a good idea. He really liked them and decided that they are indeed a pretty good substitute. Score! When the twins were tiny I was always like, "I'm never going to let those kids eat in the car!" Enter reality. Sometimes we're rushing from place to place so much that having packable snacks to eat on the go is an absolute sanity-saver. The chick peas and the pizza poppers will work great as on-the-go snacks and there are lots more in the book that will be car-worthy (i.e. not runny, not gooey, not sticky). Two more things and I'll let you get back to reading more reviews...The books is 8 chapters, each focusing on a category of snacks. The table of contents is color-coded and --this is so cool -- the top of the pages are tipped with the corresponding colors! It's easy to flip to the "baked bites" chapter when you know you're looking for the red-tipped pages!Last - there is a cool feedback chart in the back where you can track what you've made, whether/how much everyone liked it, and make notes. It's not just big empty pages. It is a chart that lists *Every Single Recipe In The Book*. Is that freaking genius or what?

I'm still trying to come around on this one, because she's so amazing. I was put off early on because a lot of the first chapter are recipes involving adding sugary ingredients to fruit. White chocolate chips into raspberries, drizzles, cakes, etc. I have absolutely no problem getting my kids to eat fruit and berries, and adding sugar to them, for me, defeats the purpose. I was really hoping for some healthier, wholesome, creative recipes like her first book. I did make the pizza bites today, and those turned out great. But not really any nutritional value. My 3 year old also loved the banana oat muffins. So I do hope that I'm wrong, and I hope that I am able to find some healthier options besides veggies and hummus-- but just to be honest I am a little disappointed.I also realize that this book does not claim to be a health book. And it is mostly creative twists on some of the packaged or fast food stuff you might normally buy. But these days, for my family, I am in search of anything help me nourish my kid's little bodies, and I'm just not convinced that this book will prove to be as useful as the other. But I look forward to putting more to the test, maybe using her recipes as a guide and adding my own, healthier ingredients... and I will hopefully be proven wrong.

In his latest, he pushes the reader as far as they can go and then some. His characters have always been great and connectable. I say keep the great work Matthew and keep pushing yourself. To the reader: if you enjoy this genre and get tired of the same retread stories you are in for a treat.

This story forays into areas of erotica that aren't really my particular taste, such as gender morphing, sci-fi, fantasy, etc. so while the "kink" here isn't exactly my cup of tea, fans of feminization, body modification, and sci-fi erotica will like this.Basically a young couple travels to San Fran and, seeking something "different" ends up in a second club that resembles Dante's vision of hell... But more perverse. They return home completely changed and their lifestyle changes accordingly.I just started reading Matthew Lee. I like that he writes across a relatively wide array of kink subgenres. This wasn't my favorite, but I've liked what I have read so far

There were parts I could have skimmed over but I am glad I didn't. It touched a certain naughty nerve in me with some scenes. Wish there were more stories out there like this one.

When nearly killing a classmate gets seventeen-year-old Sadie Su kicked out of her third boarding school in four years, she returns to her family's California vineyard estate. Here, she's meant to stay out of trouble. Here, she's meant to do a lot of things. But it's hard. She's bored. And when Sadie's bored, the only thing she likes is trouble.

Emerson Tate's a poor boy living in a rich town, with his widowed mother and strange, haunted little brother. All he wants his senior year is to play basketball and make something happen with the girl of his dreams. That's why Emerson's not happy Sadie's back. An old childhood friend, she knows his worst secrets. The things he longs to forget. The things she won't ever let him.

Haunted is a good word for fifteen-year-old Miles Tate. Miles can see the future, after all. And he knows his vision of tragic violence at his school will come true, because his visions always do. That's what he tells the new girl in town. The one who listens to him. The one who recognizes the darkness in his past.

But can Miles stop the violence? Or has the future already been written? Maybe tragedy is his destiny. Maybe it's all of theirs.

Delicate Monsters is Stephanie Kuehn at her finest.

Delicate Monsters: A Novel, by Stephanie Kuehn

From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—This novel centers on the convergence of the lives of Sadie, a damaged girl who enjoys causing others pain, and Emerson, a boy who's trying desperately to hide the dysfunction inside his family and himself. The novel follows Sadie as she arrives back in California wine country after being expelled from a series of far-flung and expensive boarding schools. Emerson is stunned by her reappearance and unprepared to face the past they shared, which only makes Sadie more interested in pursuing and taunting him. When a life-or-death crisis occurs, both of them must finally face reality, along with their demons. The emotional baggage of the main characters is never fully explained or resolved, but this will not bother teens who enjoy a briskly paced, high-adrenaline narrative full of parties, sex, and fast cars. Overall, Delicate Monsters is an enjoyable read but has no gripping moments or stunning surprises to make it stand up against more compelling novels, such as The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson (Viking, 2014) or It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini (Miramax, 2006). VERDICT For avid fans of the author and teens who enjoy honest and often dark tales.—Tara Hixon, Piedmont High School, OK

Review

“Kuehn (Complicit) once again proves herself a talented writer in a tough, punishing novel about the damages we inflict on others and the shaky defenses we build to mask trauma and guilt.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Kuehn effortlessly switches between Sadie, Emerson, and Miles, unspooling an intriguing entwined story that dips backward and forward, rife with teasing questions that gradually lay bare troubling secrets. Like her previous YA novels, Kuehn's latest benefits from tight construction, expert pacing, and voices that ring especially true for contemporary teenagers, particularly Sadie's entrancing, gleefully acerbic tone. Intelligent, compulsively readable literary fiction with a dark twist.” ―Booklist (Starred Review)

“A briskly paced, high-adrenaline narrative full of parties, sex, and fast cars...[for] teens who enjoy honest and often dark tales.” ―School Library Journal

“Kuehn's prose intensifies in feeling with each page. Her characters' mental anguish and vulnerability take center stage, no excuses allowed, pain and rawness totally exposed. Sexual language and activity reveal the highs and lows of these teens on the edge of despair. A chilling look into heartache and reckless redemption-not for the faint of heart.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Kuehn writes with the fleetness of a trained thriller author...Explosive.” ―Booklist (starred review) on Complicit

“Kuehn's second novel, after her Morris Award-winning Charm & Strange, powerfully examines how mental illness can turn into family tragedy that ripples far and wide beyond a single event. The prose is as hallucinatory as the madness Jamie seeks to uncover in a novel that's tense and ambiguous from start to finish.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Complicit

“A high-powered voice rich in charismatic style and emotional intensity illuminates this ambitious debut.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Charm & Strange

About the Author STEPHANIE KUEHN is the William C. Morris Award-winning author of Charm & Strange. She holds degrees in linguistics and sport psychology, and is currently working toward a doctorate in clinical psychology. She lives in Northern California with her husband, their three children, and a joyful abundance of pets. When she's not writing, she's running. Or reading. Or dreaming.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Brutal and honest By Inspiring Insomnia I don’t usually pay much attention to titles, but “Delicate Monsters” intrigued me. What exactly is a “delicate monster?” After reading Stephanie Kuehn’s latest novel, I did some Googling and expected to find that the phrase is from a song or a poem or another book, and I wanted to see how it was originally used to get some additional insight into Kuehn’s ideas about her story. But it looks like it’s an original phrase that she created, so I will try to interpret it myself. I think the “delicate monsters” in this story are people who have some form of mental illness and who do horrible things. In hindsight, that seems evident, but the beauty of these “delicate monsters” is that Kuehn writes them in such a way that we are able to feel some varying degrees of sympathy for them. The first and most clear-cut monster is Sadie Su. I’ll go ahead and diagnose Sadie as a sociopath. She’s cruel for no other reason than that she can be, she throws rocks at cars for fun, and she’s just generally scary. One little scene that highlighted Sadie’s mental illness more clearly than even some of the more outwardly cruel behavior she exhibits is when urinates on herself while walking in her house in her nightgown. Why? Because she likes the feel of the warmth on her legs. This freaked me out for a couple of reasons. One, because it demonstrates how disconnected she is from “normal” human behavior, and two, because it reminded me of a certain scene from The Exorcist.Emerson is our next monster. He’s Sadie’s former childhood friend and current classmate. Initially, he seems OK. But then he commits a sick act which would be bad enough on its own, but is made worse because of the way he is unable to understand the wrongness of his actions. We also learn, through Sadie, about his sadistic acts as a child, and by that point, I began to view Emerson as even scarier than Sadie.Miles is Emerson’s younger brother. He might not be a monster, unless you consider his possible ability to predict impending, horrible violence as monstrous. He’s odd and awkward and, not surprisingly, he’s tormented and bullied at school. He’s tortured by the visions in his head and unfortunately, his brother is too self-absorbed to care.Sadie connects with these two brothers in very different ways. She decides to have her unique brand of “fun” with Emerson, and I can’t say that I minded. He deserved to be on the receiving end of Sadie’s torturing. But Miles has a very different effect on Sadie. Something about his strangeness helped to level off her sociopathic tendencies, if only in her interactions with Miles.I had certain expectations going into this book, based on Kuehn’s previous two novels, Charm and Strange and Complicit, both of which were very, very good. They both dealt with mental illness and had unreliable narrators and knock-your-socks-off endings. Delicate Monsters differs primarily in its lack of an unreliable narrator, and I kept waiting for someone to get exposed. But I like how Kuehn took a different and unexpected path here. There IS a shocking ending, and it’s one that at the beginning of the book would have seemed unbelievable, but with Kuehn’s careful development of her characters throughout the story, it works, and it’s very powerful. One of my favorite things about all of Kuehn’s books is how she is completely unafraid to show the ugliness of her characters. As a reader, this can be a brutal experience, but it’s real, and it’s honest, and it’s true to life.Note: This review is based on an ARC received from the publisher.

Brilliant look into the darker side of human nature By My So-Called Book Reviews Delicate Monsters was the first of Stephanie Kuehn’s books that I received in the form of an ARC from NetGalley but it turned out to be the last of her books that I read. When I decide to read a book by a new (to me) author I always go back and look at their other books too. When I read the synopsis of Complicit and Charm and Strange I just knew I had to read them! I ended up buying all three books in print, even though I already had a digital galley of this one. This is what happens when I have cover love, and I have some seriously deep cover love for Kuehn’s novels! As I’ve stated in my previous reviews, I love all her books, they’re fantastic. If I had to rank them in order I’d say that Complicit is my favorite, then Charm and Strange, and then Delicate Monsters. Don’t get me wrong though, there was nothing about this book that I didn’t love. I only rank it slightly lower than the others because I typically prefer psychological thrillers which are told through the POV of a single unreliable narrator, in Delicate Monsters we have three narrators and they aren’t necessarily unreliable.Sadie Su is a cruel seventeen year old who doesn’t seem to care about anyone nor have appropriate feelings for things in general. She’s just moved back to the California wine country where she grew up after being expelled from numerous boarding schools. She’s definitely one of the oddest characters I’ve ever read about and even though she’s mean and cruel, I kinda liked her and enjoyed reading the chapters from her POV. Emerson is an eighteen year old boy who comes from a very poor family yet they live in a very rich town. His goals in life seem simple; hang with his friends, get the girl he likes to be his girlfriend, and continue playing basketball. When he discovers that Sadie has moved back to town after all these years he realizes he now has a new life goal, avoid Sadie Su at all costs. You see, Emerson and Sadie used to hang out at her families vineyard when they were younger and Sadie knows all of Emerson’s secrets, secrets he’d never want getting out. I really liked Emerson at first and found it really interesting that he was able to integrate himself with all of these rich kids without hiding who he was or where he came from. Then there’s Miles, Emerson’s fifteen year old brother who seems to get sick all of the time yet nobody can explain why. Miles also believes he can see the future but his visions only show him impending doom and he’s stuck trying to figure out what it means and how to stop it. He’s relentlessly bullied and tormented at school, a constant loner. Miles was a bit of an enigma for me, I wasn’t sure if I truly “liked” him as a character but found his “visions” really fascinating and I loved trying to figure out if they were real or all in his head. There’s really no way to describe the plot of Delicate Monsters because to do so would involve spoilers and there’s no fun it that! What I can say is that this is a story about secrets, dark and dirty secrets that some of our characters don’t want anyone finding out, ever. I loved the amount of mysteries that were woven within this story, there were so many secrets to try and figure out and uncover and it really kept me turning the pages. What did Sadie do to get herself expelled from so many boarding schools? Why exactly is Emerson so hell bent on avoiding Sadie? What did he do when they were younger that was so bad he doesn’t want anyone finding out? And why has Sadie kept this secret to herself all these years? Why does Miles get so sick when no doctor can find anything wrong with him? Can he really see the future or is he actually mentally unstable? If his vision of an imminent tragic event is true, can he stop it from happening? This book will have your head spinning trying to figure it all out!If you know anything about Stephanie Kuehn’s novels then you know you’re in for a total mindf*** when you read them. In my opinion she’s the best, like seriously, she’s the queen of mindf***ing your brain. I knew this going in. I’ve read her other books and was totally prepared. I thought to myself, this time I will see it coming. I’ll read between the lines & figure out the secrets of this novel before Kuehn wants me to. Ummm ya, so that’s not how it went at all! I really thought I was figuring it out too, I started seeing how all the pieces could come together to reveal this grand design and I thought “oooh this is gonna be good”. But what do I know? Clearly nothing because while I was busy “figuring out” what I thought was going on Kuehn was busy laying out her perfect web to trap me. When I finally realized what was going on my brain was like “what just happened?? no seriously…….. what the f*** just happened?!?!?!” I have no clue how she does it, NO FREAKIN CLUE PEOPLE! But she does it, every single time and that’s why she’s the queen :)I highly recommend Delicate Monsters (or any of Kuehn’s three books) for readers who love to get swept away into the darker side of human nature. If you fancy stories that are extremely dark and disturbing yet pull you in and fascinate you at the same time, then this is the book for you. If you love writing that mesmerizes and captivates you while also making you feel somewhat uncomfortable, then this is the book for you. If you enjoy deep, twisted character studies and endings that are left slightly open, then this is definitely the book for you. If you don’t love, like or even enjoy most of the things I’ve just mentioned then run, don’t walk, cause this isn’t the book for you A huge thank you to the publishers, St. Martin’s Griffin and to NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary, advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Delicate Monsters was chocolate… only bitter chocolate. The story sounded entertaining like ice cream with chocolate chip cookie dough (cookie douuuughhhhh) yet what I read was mostly plain ol’ vanilla. Can you tell I am hungry??? Delicate Monsters was a book I was extremely excited for, and I am not saying this book was bad… just that the main characters were horrible people.**I hate calling people horrible :'( but there is nothing else I can say! They. Were. Awful. I’ll explain later. What I LikedAw man, why haven’t I read any of Stephanie Kuehn’s books yet? Awww maaaaan is she a WONDERFUL writer! I can’t even get over how hard it was too put down Delicate Monsters (even if it did gross me out at times…) Her words. Her story. Her writing! HER EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK! *Breathes deeply* the way this book is written, is amazing. The detail is fantastic (and blech, gross) but oh so wonderfully written. Delicate Monsters is probably one of the most well written books I have ever read @_@ but uh, I tend to love how books are written sooo XDGoodness… I give this book the award of The Most Explosive Ending I Have Ever Read In My Life Thus Far (as of 2015)! I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING! I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING! I DID NOT SEE THAT COMMMMMMMMMMMMIIIIIIIING! Oh gosh O_O somebody help me, I can’t get over it! THAT WAS SHOCKING! Maybe I shouldn’t be so shocked but whatever XD it did blow me away and freak me out and oh gosh, I can’t even O_OWhat I Didn't LikeOh gooooooolllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy~ My biggest beef (more foooood, yuuumahhhh) with Delicate Monsters are the main characters. The only one I actually liked was Miles, poor Miles. He was an odd character yet none of it was his fault! His stupid brother (oh gosh did I HATE him) Emerson was ridiculous. I think if I had to choose a character I absolutely hated, it would be Emerson. Emerson Tate is the most horrible main character I have ever read in my existence. Oh gosh, I never really dislike characters like I disliked him… yet I sort of feel like that was the point with Emerson, but whatever. HE WAS AWFUL! Oh, and Sadie Su was awful. They were both horrible but at least Sadie was a bit less bad Not a fan of Emerson or Sadie people… I just did not expect them to be THAT bad! This book was a bit more adult than I expected O___O! Some of these scenes *shivers* I wish I could forget them… Stephanie Kuehn is a fantastic writer but did she need to go into all the detail? Jeez :O! I did not want to know that, or that, OR THAT! TOO MUCH INFOOOO *screams*VerdictDelicate Monsters is written by the wonderful Stephanie Kuehn and though disgusted me a bit, is a story I would recommend to people who don’t mind more mature content…
