About the Author Luke was born and raised on a cattle property in New South Wales, Australia. After years of struggling as a cattleman Luke came to the conclusion there would be no future in making a decent living from cattle breeding or farming in general. He had no idea after he sold the cattle property, and started to look for a financial advisor that he would end writing a book alerting people to what he believes is the best way to prepare and prosper in this existing financial debt crisis that precedes the great depression. He is totally committed and passionate about getting this information out to as many people as will listen. Once you understand this thinking you can prepare and succeed not only in the long slow winter deflationary season but in all seasons of our economy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is Iron Man at his worst By Banon I love Iron Man and his nemesis, the Mandarin. That said, this story, and really, the entire Kieron Gillen run should be avoided. He does as much damage as possible to the Iron Man mythos in such a short amount of time it's crazy. From the stupid "secret origin" of Tony which completely ruins his relationship with Howard Stark and oddly enough, gets the Arno Stark character completely wrong to this, where the Mandarin's rings can now speak and have their own personalities. Watching the rings bicker and argue is as dumb as it sounds and retroactively hurts the character, implying that these stupid rings were the real villain all along, not the man who wielded them. It's a huge disservice to the character and his long history. Kieron Gillen was a writer who only wanted to make his mark on the series and he did it in the worst way possible. Rather than tell good Iron Man stories, he devoted his short, yet far too long, run to making permanent changes to the character's rich backstory. Any true fan of the character would be well advised to avoid this run like the plague, and to make matters worse, Greg Land's horrible traced artwork does nothing to improve the story. Every other character is smiling in the exact same way as if he traced them from the exact same photo.Avoid this. If you like Iron Man even a little, keep away. You have been warned.

When elusive Italian hit man, ‘The Winemaker’, refuses to carry out a final job for his American crime boss, a ruthless, charismatic assassin is sent to Italy to attempt to track him down. In an increasingly corporate America that’s impatiently banging on the door of the 21st century, all the old ways are changing – but in the mountains of Southern Italy, there’s one man who is still ‘Old Country’. Funny, poignant, violent, suspenseful, Old Country is a gangster story like no other. Full of authentic Italian characters, and snapshots of village life, it is a story of family, love and betrayal; the story of a man with a personal code being dragged into an increasingly lawless world, with explosive and heart-breaking consequences.

By Dannii Elle I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the author, Leonardo Donofrio, for providing me with a copy. Before embarking on the journey portrayed within this book's pages I knew only one thing about this book: it was similar to the Godfather. I might not have read the book yet but I was well aware of the story. I was intrigued and excited to begin something of which I had so little knowledge and no experience or association with.Old Country is a tale of Italian mob culture, close-knit families and the recorded life of a contract killer. In this world, blood is thicker than water and honour, or lack of it, and reputation can sink a man. It is a quiet tale that develops slowly in long moments of peace and quick bursts of action - quite the opposite to what I had expected. There is action, but the story is primarily developed over familial episodes and childhood recollections, all recounted over the lush Tuscan backdrop. There was a beauty to this book that I hadn't anticipated - both in setting and writing. The characters often felt like Italian stereotypes, and yet, were entirely believable. The stereotypes were not wooden but allowed for an accessible world to open for the reader. Without this relatable and understood link to the Italian culture and heritage, I would be quite lost. I found all the characters likable and unlikable in equal amounts and, as there was no definitive good guys/bad guys binary, I found myself rooting for all the characters simultaneously. No one is innocent and all are guilty. Perhaps my empathy lay a little more closely with Marco Rizzo, as he was our primary protagonist and therefore our primary link to the story. His repeated childhood reminiscences also allowed me to sympathize and understand his present a lot better and align me a little more to his side in this case of bad vs. badder. There is a hint of the man he is to become in these youthful anecdotes. The reader gets to view them with their future knowledge and tear them apart to decipher the clues as to how he came to become the man he is in the book's present; how he became a killer.Yet everyone has a multitude of sides presented for them. This is represented by the myriad of names given to each character, which embodies the multitude of sides to these complex characters, and the number of roles they perform - son, father, lover, boss, good guy, bad guy, hero, villain. Murderer. Deliverer of justice. It allowed me to view these, what I believed, initially unrelatable characters more as human beings as the book progressed. I got to see them as multi-faceted people with motivations, once alien, and now understood, if not approved. The reader is given both sides of the story, which makes it interesting, but the fact that neither is good makes it compelling. If you want beautiful storytelling, a rich setting, diverse characters, a compelling story-line and a unique plot then look no further, because Old Country is for you.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Old Style Mafia Brilliance! By Nile Princess This is one of those books that, for various reasons, shouldn't have worked for me, but it just DID. I will start by saying that if you're looking for a mafia book that's all about killing, violence, backdoor deals and mob business this isn't the book for you. This is very much an ensemble piece and is a book to read slowly and savor, not one with rollercoaster twists and turns. It's to be sipped like a fine wine and I guess it's no coincidence that the assassin is also a winemaker. The book opens with a multi-person hit at a dock, and is described beautifully by the author. I like my assassins cold, controlled, and deliberate and Marco Rizzo is all of those things. He is one with his weapon and it's eerie and just...poetry. The book then jumps to a different situation. This is one of the things that usually doesn't work for me but was just seamless in this book. At no point did I think 'Why am I reading about wine and bees?? What's going on with the hit??' The author takes us back to Marco's childhood in Italy, to the hit on his father; we meet his cranky and selectively senile mother, his drunken uncle and at the same time we meet the 'capo' in New York who wants Marco to do one last job (a hit on a female reporter) and who refuses to pay Marco for the previous job when he says no women, no children. There is a host of colorful secondary characters and we get all their stories (from Flavio cheating with a black woman - what?! lol - and what Greco had to do to survive jail). What's certain is that it's never confusing or boring! This is extremely hard to do and shows that this author is extremely talented. I know this style won't work for everyone, but take it from someone who hates when timelines shift and other characters are introduced, it totally works! The refusal to pay Marco is the catalyst to a bloodbath that spans New York and Southern Italy, and Flavio (the NY capo) comes to understand who he's really dealing with. He was warned and he didn't listen. I was yelling at the book, 'OMG just pay him! How many people have to die?'The author's writing style is beautifully poetic and descriptive. It can go on a bit at times, but his writing transports you right into the story. I could see Southern Italy, all the vineyards, the villages, and the people and culture complete with their dry humor; I loved it.Rizzo is very much a multi-faceted character and, at times, it's hard to funny prankster, with the coldblooded killer. In terms of improvement, the editing needs a lot of work as the author himself has admitted. I enjoyed the book so much that it wasn't enough to take me out the story but it is very noticeable. Also, towards the end, I felt bits of the descriptions could have been chopped and I really didn't care about Pops' backstory because I was waiting to hear about the twins. At that point, I guess because I knew it was near the end, I was just ready to find out what happened. All in all, this is a solid, first effort from a new author. I felt like I got everything I needed out the story and though I lost one of my fave characters, everything made sense. At the end of this story, I was left with strong satisfaction of a story well told and a definite reluctance to say goodbye to these characters. Brava, author, on a job well done!* I received a copy of this book for my honest review.*

By Amazon Customer This was recommended to me via a friend who insisted it was up there with ‘The Godfather’ and while I was sceptical at first I would have to agree.Few crime books are as beautifully written as this, which was a beguiling mix of the poetic and the profane, with a pace that built steadily throughout to an exhilarating final third. An absorbing read and full of authentic Italian flavour – easily the best book I’ve read this year and if you like your assassins with a little depth and compassion then this is definitely the book for you!

I laughed with the heroine, Elizabeth, and her friends when they were doing their college tricks. It took me back to my years in college and all that my friends and I did, but when the story began to include Michael, her long lost love (200 or so years) you feel the love for each other, you feel her doubts(he is a vampire), and you feel how she struggles to be the girl he knew(Alise). She wants to fit in his world because not having him in hers after she has found him isn't an option. She has been dreaming of him to the point that she thinks that she is loosing it and she's afraid to be cast as some one mentally unstable. No matter what Elizabeth is bent on keeping him even though she knows it won't be easy because her love for him trespasses time and reality. You will have a very fast paced drama, their meeting with men and old vampires who warn to exterminate Michael; their use of Elizabeth to capture Michael and the stand that Michael and his friends take. When I finished reading the book, I wanted it to go on so I could keep reading about the adventures of Elizabeth and Michael.

She is a fun heroine, having lots of college antics and falling for her Art History Professor. He, of course, is a 200 year old vampire. The reason I gave this 4 stars instead of the 5 it probably deserved, is because, for me,it was kinda slow to get started. They didn't start to have an intense relationship until about 50% which was also when she found out he was a vampire. Not that I was bored and I am easily bored. The author is obviously a great writer to keep me interested through the slow build up of a relationship.Possible spoilers ahead:At 75%, when the bad guys showed up, it was incredibly intense. There was non stop action and suspense until the thrilling conclusion. As the fake reviewers always say, I could not put it down.Another plus; The story wrapped up to a nice conclusion, not a cliff hangar.I did not see any other work by this author but, I will be watching out for more.

I'm glad I got it. This story touches on romance, past lives, dreams, crazy college antics, mystery, and intrigue. The beginning was slow, but as the book progressed it became steady. When action occurred, then it went fast. I got so engrossed with the story, I found myself at the end. The characters were well written with personalities to match. Though, I've read many books about past lives and dreams, I was highly entertained with the character, Liz. The crazy antics of college life made it very funny, and her constantly talking to herself "I not Crazy". This author has a great talent in capturing your attention with descriptive writing throughout the story. Twists and turns would turn up and surprise me. The attraction between Liz and Michael was done at a gradual pace instead of instant. No sex scenes in this book, but did have heavy petting.Liz arrives in Canada, after leaving Iowa, to attend college. She meets new friends, who indulge her with carrying out college antics against other fraternities. She applies for a part time job, which happens to be with her Art professor. She has always felt drawn to Canada. She has been having dreams of a fantasy lover named Michel. When she sees her Art professor, she is shocked. He looks like her Michel, but only paler. She works for him, and gradually their attraction for one another will spark. Turn of events will happen, and they realize that they are in danger. The truth about Michael comes out. He is a Vampire. She is his long lost love, from 200 years ago. They will work together to find out who is after them, and why. With help from unusual friends of Michael's . They will defeat the enemies. The story had a great ending, but left me with lots of questions. My curiosity has been piqued. I look forward to reading more by this author.I've recommended this book to family and friends.

"You don't know any spells to turn men into women, do you?" you ask the wizard nervously, well aware of how strange the question must sound. He scoffs. "You kidding? Gender transformation magic just so happens to be my specialty." Your eyes widen. "No way... "This could be the solution to all my problems! The novel I'm working on is about a man who wakes up one morning as a woman, but I haven't been able to get into the protagonist's head." "Is that so? Well, when I'm done with you you'll be able to write a friggin' sex change autobiography! But I've gotta warn you, it's hard out there for a woman. Are you sure you want to go through with this?" *"Yeah, let's do it." *"I don't know..."

In April of 2015, Aurora Sparks set the Amazon charts on fire with debut game book Become the Woman of Your Dreams!, the first-ever interactive gender transformation novel. Now, she's back with the sequel to that sizzling runaway smash. In Become the Woman of Your Dreams! 2, you step into the shoes of a male erotica author hard at work on an epic gender transformation novel. You've got the ambition and the talent to write a masterpiece. There's only one minor issue: you have no idea what it's like to be a woman. Just when you're about to throw in the towel, a wizard from another dimension offers you the chance to experience life from a female perspective. He asks whether you're into blondes, brunettes, black-haired women or redheads. Do you like your women supermodel-skinny or a little bit thicker? Then, with a wave of his magic wand, he creates a sexy female body customized to suit your tastes. From there, you're thrown into a weird, wide world where anything can happen—and I do mean anything. You might hop on the back of a werewolf biker's Harley and experience a massive MC orgy in a tumble-down roadhouse, or recline on the back of a Bengal tiger as you get some oral action from a vampire billionaire. A dream could spirit you away to a fairytale forest, where you'll watch Sasquatch duke it out with a bear shifter for your affection. You may even meet an untimely end... and then hook up with well-hung angels in the afterlife! One thing, at least, is for certain: with 100,000 words' worth of content (That's nearly three times the length of BtWoYD!!), 50-plus unique endings and myriad alternate paths at your fingertips, you'll never read the same story twice.

As a pre-op transgender woman, I've always wanted to know what it was like to be in a real woman's body (and be in a biker werewolf orgy lol). If you're a real woman or hoping to one day become one, I highly recommend this novel. It really helps you see through the eyes of a woman's body and what we would let a hairy Sasquatch do with it ;) am I right ladies? This is for you girls who think 50 shades was boring. I mean come on where were the sexy cunnilingus loving vampires? And not even one single space wizard who can change genders. My only complaint is that it turned me on too much!

This book is based on, and meant to serve as a companion to, the Harvard course "Science and Cooking: from Haute Cuisine to Soft Matter Science", which aims to teach physics and chemistry through examples of food and cooking. The course features world-renowned chefs explaining the remarkable creations from their kitchens paired with explanations of the underlying science in everyday cooking and haute cuisine. This book focuses on conveying the scientific information in the course, with the order and content of the chapters closely following how the concepts would ordinarily be explained in the class. It additionally contains graphics, sample calculations, and short videos illustrating key concepts. Topics include soft matter materials, such as emulsions and foams, illustrated by aioli and ice cream; diffusion and heat transfer, exemplified by the cooking of a steak and the culinary phenomenon spherification; as well as phase transitions, elasticity, viscosity, and the science underlying fermentation. It is our hope that this book is a helpful supplement to students taking the course, either on campus or online. It should also be a useful resource for other courses and initiatives aiming to teach physics and chemistry through food and cooking, as well as to any curious reader with an interest in how recipes work on a scientific level.

Really don't understand the title since there is very little real science discussed in the book. Nothing more than very elementary discussions of the processes involved. Really more of a "Cooking science for non-science majors." Stick with Harold McGee. Much harder of a read but way more useful.

By luis funada The book explains a lot about the science of cooking, but a book being from Harvard and all, and having a major error on a simple calculation is quite embarassing. According to the book when calculating the calories of a Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie, they came up with this result:- (4g)x(4Cal/g)+(49g)x(4Cal/g)+(19g)x(9Cal/g)=378CalI am not saying that the formula is wrong, but the adding and multiplying is quite off, and this is a calculation that a first grader wouldnt miss.I just read to this part so far, but I had to comment on that.

Allie Hawkins is upset, to say the least, when her twenty-three year old daughter, a high school teacher, announces she is in love with one of her eighteen-year-old students, and is going to marry him and send him to college. It reminds her of her bad marriage to her high school sweetheart and their quick divorce. She tells her daughter about her objections and the reason. Allie and her current husband, Alex, plan a strategy to learn more about Ted, the young boyfriend. Alex invites Ted over for dinner while Savanna, their daughter, is out of town. Little does Allie know Savanna’s boyfriend’s desire is centered on her—and her husband approves. When Alex is called away during dinner, she has no idea the boyfriend plans on taking her, or that her husband is watching the hot action on surveillance cameras.

Returning to her homeland of Santiago, Chile, is the last thing that Tina Aguilar wants to do during the summer of her sixteenth birthday. It has taken eight years for her to feel comfort and security in America with her mother and her new husband. And it has been eight years since she has last seen her father.

Despite insisting on the visit, Tina’s father spends all his time focused on politics and alcohol rather than connecting with Tina, making his betrayal from the past continue into the present. Tina attracts the attention of a mysterious stranger, but the hairpin turns he takes her on may push her over the edge of truth and discovery.

The tense, final months of the Pinochet regime in 1989 provide the backdrop for author Lyn Miller-Lachmann’s suspenseful tale of the survival and redemption of the Aguilar family, first introduced in the critically acclaimed Gringolandia.

Surviving Santiago, by Lyn Miller-Lachmann

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—This companion to Miller-Lachmann's Gringolandia (Curbstone, 2009) focuses on Daniel's 16-year-old younger sister, Tina. In 1989, Tina is sent to Chile for the summer to be with her father and aunt. Her father is a known anti-government activist, and though he is able to work as a reporter for a radio station, his home life is difficult due to the large amount of alcohol that he consumes and his physical handicaps, which were caused by the beatings he endured when he was locked up as a political prisoner. His sister feels an obligation to help care for him, even though they have a rocky relationship. Tina finds herself in an uncomfortable situation. She is lonely and spends much of her time at her father's house trying to keep busy while her father and aunt are at work. When she meets a delivery boy named Frankie, she believes that he will save her from the agonizing summer ahead. The first two-thirds of the book set the stage for the political climate of Chile in the late 1980s and the interpersonal relationships of the main characters. However, the last third of the novel does not ring true, as Tina stands by a character who betrays her, even when it could mean life or death for her and the ones she loves, and the end seems too pat and implausible. VERDICT Purchase for collections in need of literature with Hispanic protagonists and historical time periods not often covered in schools.—Elizabeth Kahn, Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy, Jefferson, LA

She remembers her papá from childhood. That papá loved his family and spent time with them. He drove his children to school and played with them at the beach. The father she has come to stay with in Santiago is a very different man. Tina knows that his imprisonment and torture caused these deep changes in him, but still, she yearns for that papá from years ago. She resents having to leave her friends and home to come stay with this cold man who doesn’t even know her age and is either working or drunk most of the day. This visit is a chance to heal their relationship, but though he asked her to come, her father doesn’t seem to be making much of an effort.I enjoyed the first book, Gringolandia, because it gave me a look into the history of Chile. Historical fiction in young adult literature is frequently set during wars or political upheaval, but it’s not often that we see the history of South American countries. It’s not necessary to read Gringolandia to understand and appreciate this sequel/companion, but it would provide a little more background so it’s probably advisable. Both books include history and political intrigue. Gringolandia shows readers what it is like to be an exile, while Surviving Santiago is about Tina coming back to her home country. This might be part of the reason that I found this book lighter. There are certainly plenty of difficulties and danger is lurking, but Tina is on a mission of restoring connections to both family and country. She starts out counting the days until she can get back to the U.S., but she has hope that things will change.Because Tina’s father is working most of the time, Tina has to fill her days with something or someone. An attractive young man does catch her eye. She doesn’t always make the safest choices in this relationship, but that’s part of why this book works. She’s moving forward in spite of missteps here and there. I found myself cheering for Tina. She speaks her mind on many issues and she’s learning about herself and what she is willing to fight for.Recommendation: Historical fiction fans should definitely get it soon. Gringolandia was great, but I liked Surviving Santiago even more. Tina is a girl who loves deeply and will not give up on people easily. Readers will enjoy getting to know her while learning a bit about the past.

This book was a nice little surprise for me. I was pleasantly surprised by this read. It was good. A great story that had a bit of romance and suspense and a bunch of family drama and some good world history.Tina is from Santiago and has lived in the states for a few years now well about 8 years I think. Santiago has been under a dictatorship for quite some time and her father used to work underground in a rebellion. He was captured tortured and set free and began to drink. Now Tina's parents are living in separate countries. Tina's mother is getting married. The condition of the divorce so she could get married... send Tina to Santiago for a summer visit. So this is where are story begins. Tina goes to Santiago.. her father is an alcoholic and a workaholic. She is left to her own thoughts or with her aunt most of the visit. She meets Frankie a cute boy that drives a motorcycle and has lots of secrets. Secrets that are deadly. Tina finds herself mixed up in stuff that could hurt her and her family and in love. This leads her to figure out where her loyalties really lie.It was good. Really good. I was really into this story. I think it had a bit over everything and I enjoyed all the little parts that made the whole. The story was pretty well paced and I felt very entertained while reading the book. I also learned some. The story behind the story was interesting. I really knew nothing about Santiago and so when I agreed to read the book for a review, I googled Santiago and Pinochet and learned just a few facts that set me in the right area for the read. The book really brought some of those things to life for me. Without overwhelming me with details, I got a good look inside the country of Santiago during the Pinochet rule. Well actually the end of it, but there was still enough there to give me a sense of hatred for this dictator. It was a good little history lesson and a really good historical novel. The romance was sweet in this book, although a bit rushed and the entire time I knew something wasn't right I still felt wrapped up in Tina's love story. I didn't really connect with Frankie throughout the story but I did connect with Tina so I was into the romance for her.Tina was a pretty real character for me. She made dumb decisions, she felt extreme in her emotions, she was a bit careless and didn't think things through. So really she was like a real 15 year old. I connected with her fast and really felt for her. She has had a hard life and just when things seemed normal to her she was shipped off to see a father she hasn't seen for years. She gets to Santiago and tries to make the best of it but her father just isn't into anything but drinking and working. So during the day she is left to her own devices and then in the evening when her father comes home, she ends up spending her time listening to his drunken rants and taking care of him. Still she does her best to build the relationship. The story behind the romance was quite good, ineteresting and suspenseful. Like I said, from the beginning I knew Frankie wasn't all candy and sunshine. Something was off. When it was time to reveal what I was a bit surprised and angry and for just a bit I was thrown into some good suspense thrilling stuff. A nice break from the oh so sweet and gushy romance. The ending was wrapped up a bit too nicely for me but it still gave me a smile and warm fuzzies inside. It was too good for real life but worked well for a happy ending in a story. It was a good solid read that kept me entertained and happy from beginning to end.

Multi-layered story about romance, family drama, and politics By Latin@s in Kid Lit As part of her parents’ divorce agreement, Tina Aguilar must travel from Madison, Wisconsin to Santiago, Chile, to spend the summer with her father, Marcelo, a leader of the democracy movement who was previously imprisoned and tortured by the government. The experience left him with permanent physical disabilities. He is also suicidal and an alcoholic. At first, Tina’s summer is uneventful. She stays mostly in the house with her aunt and father, who barely pays attention to her. She decides she wants to go home early, but then she meets Frankie, a motorcycle delivery boy who gives her plenty of swoony reasons to stay in Chile. Tina and Frankie fall in love, but later–without giving too much away–she discovers he can’t be trusted and that she and her father’s lives are in danger.Lyn Miller-Lachman does a beautiful job with creating a multi-layered narrative. The romance, family drama, and political intrigue are woven together seamlessly and each of the characters are fully developed. Because of Miller-Lachman’s extensive research and personal travel experiences, the descriptions of Chile are vivid. She captures both the physical landscape and the tense emotional atmosphere during the last months of the Pinochet regime. One thing I especially appreciated was that Miller-Lachman allows the story to unfold. In other words, I have read so many young adult novels that literally start with a bang, following the “drop the reader right into the action” formula, that reading a narrative that didn’t start this way was a relief. I got to know Tina at home in Wisconsin before she started her journey, which allowed me to connect and sympathize with her before her struggles began.
