The Witch Hunter, by Virginia Boecker

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—In this fantasy adventure set in an alternative medieval England, witchcraft of any kind is illegal, even though magic practitioners were welcomed in the past. Employed by the Inquisitor, Lord Blackwell, 16-year-old Elizabeth, and her best friend, Caleb, hunt witches who will be burned at the stake. Elizabeth fully believes that all magic is evil and must be destroyed. But when Blackwell finds her with some herbs, Elizabeth is declared a witch herself and is sentenced to die. She is rescued by an unlikely ally, the notorious wizard Nicholas Perevil, who wants her to fulfill a prophecy to save him from a deadly curse. The teen is skeptical of the witches, pirates, healers, and other Reformists who accompany Perevil and is afraid of what will happen when they discover she is a witch hunter. However, she gradually becomes suspicious of Blackwell's motives and must finally decide where her loyalties lie. Debut author Boecker's first-person, present tense narrative creates a suspenseful mood by allowing readers to see Elizabeth's secrets, doubts, and fears. Secondary characters are well realized and integral to the plot. The book has plenty of action—sword fights, battles with monsters, black magic, and betrayal—but there is also camaraderie and romance. The ending leaves room for a sequel. Fans of Kristin Cashore's Graceling (Houghton Harcourt, 2008) will see similarities in this story of a girl with deadly skills who begins to question using her services to benefit a brutal ruler. VERDICT This action-packed tale will be a welcome addition to most YA fantasy collections.—Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT

Review Praise for The Witch Hunter:A YALSA 2016 Teens Top Ten Nominee* "An explosive cocktail of high-stakes adventure... The first-person, present-tense narration is rendered masterfully; coupled with the cinematic vividness of the descriptions, the whole makes for a page-turning delight."―PW (starred review)"Debut author Boecker's first-person, present tense narrative creates a suspenseful mood by allowing readers to see Elizabeth's secrets, doubts, and fears...The book has plenty of action-sword fights, battles with monsters, black magic, and betrayal-but there is also camaraderie and romance...Fans of Kristin Cashore's Graceling (Houghton Harcourt, 2008) will see similarities in this story of a girl with deadly skills who begins to question using her services to benefit a brutal ruler. This action-packed tale will be a welcome addition to most YA fantasy collections."―SLJ"In her debut novel (a sequel is planned), Boecker has created an alternate sixteenth-century world whose characters are as intriguing as the magical world they inhabit...Woven within the complex fantasy is a new understanding of friendship and a tenuous but sweet Romeo and Juliet-like love story that promises to blossom, along with the witchcraft, mystery, and bloodletting."―Booklist"Elizabeth is a compelling heroine, surrounded by strong supporting characters. Particularly compelling is Elizabeth's uneasy alliance with Fifer as they race to find answers, uncovering dark secrets along the way...First-time novelist Boecker delivers a promising debut. This reviewer is hoping Elizabeth's future adventures prove equally engaging."―VOYA"The world-building here is comprehensive but concise...Thrilling action scenes combine with a twisting plot to spur readers forward. Perhaps most compelling, however, is Elizabeth's character arc, which moves her from a girl so beholden to the men in her life that she hands her body over both physically and sexually, to an autonomous young adult making decisions for herself....It will satisfy fans of warrior girls who realize their own power."―The Bulletin"Those who like their stories fast-paced will enjoy this mashup of historical and fantasy. Ghouls, ghosts, magic, and supernatural creatures all appear, lending humor and creepiness in equal measure."―School Library Connection"[Filled] with everything a good fantasy book needs: swords, poison, black magic, and betrayal. Elizabeth Grey is a tough, feisty protagonist whose fearless heart takes more twists and turns than the narrow city alleys in which the story opens. A fun, corpse-ridden, blood-drenched debut."―April Tucholke, author of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea"Sassy and smart, this page-turning fantasy is full of action, wit, and magic. I ate it up in one sitting and demand more...now!"―Beth Revis, New York Times bestselling author of Across the Universe and The Body Electric"Crisp writing, a fast pace with bloody action, and the all-important monster rats make this story of a bold but more-vulnerable-than-she-realizes witch hunter a strong fantasy debut."―Kate Elliott, author of Cold Magic and Court of Fives"Elizabeth is an endearingly flawed heroine, and the other characters are just as nuanced and delightful. With an immersive world and fast-paced, addictive plot, The Witch Hunter is perfect for those looking for their next fantastical adventure."―Emily Lloyd-Jones, author of Illusive

When you throw comparisons to Graceling in the mix, GAME OVER, I am convinced that I must read the book. The Witch Hunter by debut author Virginia Boecker is an alternate history young adult fantasy book. It is compelling, fiercely gripping and well written. This book is a unique and worthy addition to the ever expanding young adult fantasy genre. It has character development and world building in spades.Boecker’s debut is told from the first person viewpoint of Elizabeth Grey. Elizabeth is the titular witch hunter. You see, she lives in a world where witches are considered Reformists and magic is considered evil. Elizabeth’s job is to ferret out witches with her elite group and take them to a character named Blackwell alive. From there, the witches are imprisoned and interrogated. PLOT TWIST! Elizabeth is arrested for witchcraft when she is found with pregnancy preventing herbs, essentially birth control, in her pockets. She thinks it is all a mistake. However, it is zero hour when Elizabeth is rescued by the most infamous wizard, Nicholas Perevil. Perevil offers her a deal — Elizabeth must break a curse on him and if she does, she will keep her life. The Witch Hunter is an excellent read, where the point isn’t quite the curse, but re-examining what it means to be good and evil in a world where magic is outlawed. If you like characters that have big realizations and that are dynamic as the book goes along, rather than static in their beliefs, you will love Elizabeth Grey. When The Witch Hunter opens, Elizabeth is quite steadfast in her belief that all witches are bad and evil. She doesn’t understand why anyone would perform magic and go against Blackwell. As she lives with Nicholas Perevil, the famous wizard who saves her, Elizabeth’s thoughts and feelings begin to change. She begins to develop empathy for the plight of the magic users.Furthermore, character traits of Elizabeth’s that I admired were that she’s little and so she’s consistently underestimated. Yet, Elizabeth is a fierce contender. I liked that eventually she did open up her mind to different possibilities. She’s a courageous character and one who is actually compelling enough to carry the story.Boecker’s historical fantasy is set in a world that is quite similar to our own. The time period echoes the medieval era but also reminded me a little bit of Cromwellian England. As I read the book, I noticed that the society seems to be a patriarchy where currently men hold all the power — there is a King, there’s Blackwell who is essentially Lord Protector, there’s Perevil who is the most powerful wizard. It’s interesting though that Elizabeth, a female, is the one who must save Perevil and break the curse. The magic within this book is interesting too. Each magic user sort of has different strengths and some have different specialties like healing and necromancy. I liked that magic wasn’t some unlimited resource and deus ex machina. If you like kissing books and romances, you’re in luck when reading The Witch Hunter. As the book opens, Elizabeth has this best friend from childhood named Caleb who has helped her get into the witch hunters and who seems to always have her back. I started the book thinking Elizabeth would end up with Caleb. However, when she goes to live with Perevil, there’s a new contender – John, the son of a pirate and a healer. John is awesome and let me just say that I really like what develops between the two.In all, this book sort of surprised me with how good it was. The Witch Hunter is certainly worth adding to your summer to be read pile.

The Witch Hunter By Jenny Q @ Let Them Read Books I had really high hopes for this historical fantasy debut, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Almost a month passed between when I read this and when I wrote my review, and I could hardly remember a thing about it before I skimmed back through it, so I think that's pretty telling. A medieval world filled with witches and wizards, revenants and prophets, magic and alchemy should be extremely gripping and atmospheric . . . but it's not so much.I had some issues with the presentation of Elizabeth's character. There's a twist early on when we find out what Elizabeth has been doing with her nights, and I really felt like it merited more explanation and emotional exploration. That kind of secret has got to take a toll on a young woman, but we don't know if it does on Elizabeth because she never talks about it. And later in the story, Elizabeth is confronted with some startling truths about the world she thought she knew, but really, I couldn't help but think that a smart girl like her should have figured it all out much sooner. I did.Combine that lack of depth with some uneven pacing and a superficial romance, and eventually I realized I was reading just to get to the end and see how it would all play out. There was a lot of potential here for in-depth characterization and gritty storytelling, but it wasn't fully realized and ending up feeling rather simplistic. The Witch Hunter is by no means a bad book--it certainly has its share of action and excitement--but I found it to be ultimately forgettable in a genre where the bar has been set high by some fantastic stories.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. No GoT here By Yzabel (Note: I was given a copy through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.)Somewhat OK, but too full of holes (in terms of world-building) and too flat when it came to the characters. I had a hard time reconciling the setting to a parallel Tudor England (minus the Tudors), as some elements were similar, but others were too confusing to make much sense—including language, too modern at times. For instance, no witch hunter seemed to ever question the origin of their stigmas, how they came to be, when it was actually a pretty obvious question to ask (especially in a world that wasn't heavy on religion, so "it comes from God" wouldn't have made a satisfying answer).Elizabeth in general was of the too stupid to live variety. Supposedly strong, supposedly a well-trained prodigy witch hunter, but piling up mistake upon mistake, for a reason that felt a little too weak to be believable (the way she mentioned it, it didn't seem like she was going through hell, more that it was an inconvenience to her). The reason why she was caught was stupid, a mix of bad decisions (getting drunk because her friend who may or may not be her love interest was seeing someone else) and other bad decisions (what on Earth was she doing with those herbs in her pocket. The romance I'll put in the "inserted here for marketing reasons" category. Bland, not useful—becoming friends would have been enough—, a vague triangle that wasn't really one because it was fairly predictable, andAlso, probably a minor quibble on my part, but this just happened to irk me: "Then I get an idea." I counted at least four occurrences of it, all as one sentence that was a paragraph of its own, and it just struck me as repetitive and annoying. There were interesting ideas and themes in the novel, and hooks that could've been so much more, when it came to politics and hypocrisy—laws defied by the ones making them, plotting in the shadows... However, I wouldn't put this on a Game of Thrones level as the blurb claims it is, and it was too muddled overall to make for a terrific plot. Some fantasy books take too long and are too slow-paced to carry their plots properly; here, it would've been a good thing, as it would've given more meat to the story, and more room for the world-building to unfold.Close to "it's OK", only I realise that I'm already not caring about it anymore barely half an hour after having finished it. I admit I just got to the end so that I could write my review and switch to another book.

Ameliora is a young gray wolf struggling with a disturbing recurring nightmare. In this terrible dream, she is pursued by a beast with horrible fangs who kills her each night just as she awakes from her horror. She tries to cope with the troubling scenes but is not completely able to hide it from her fellow pack mates. Most of them offer support, but some think she is just trying to avoid her duties.

During a hunt, a beloved motherly figure entertains the group by retelling an ancient myth of a dark-hearted wolf who bonds with the spirit of chaos and corruption to create a half-mortal that terrorizes the wolf world. In response, a pure-of-heart she-wolf bonds with the spirit of peace and unity to battle the evil beast.

Haunted by this story and how it might relate to her own nightmares, Ameliora slowly begins to discover her true character—and even her true purpose. As a prophecy comes to light, Ameliora feels the pull to venture out to answer an inner calling—and comes face-to-face with her destiny.

Filled with mystery, intrigue, and heroism, The Messenger is a rousing adventure from the opening page to the last.

By Stefany Rattles I went ahead and gave this book 5 stars! It has a very engaging beginning to the story and it keeps you hooked. One thing you will notice right off the bat is that the character names are all unique and to me, they also fit them well. The descriptions were on point and events were explained thoroughly. The length of the book is good, if it were short it would have lacked depth and I think that by the way it was written, the story is as it should be.It was definitely intriguing and it has a mystical kind of feel. I enjoyed reading about Ameliora and how she finds herself changing and growing into someone that you will admire. She has struggles that she must overcome but of course she is not alone in her journey.I did feel like there was something missing but couldn't quite put my finger on it which is no big deal, Still, I recommend this book, it was a good read!Hope to see more from Ms. Gartland.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a terrific read, very intellectually written By Joannes Rhino The first thing I gotta say that the author clearly had a very good imagination. The main character, Ameliora, is well developed and well-crafted. The part where she discovers her true calling is something I really enjoyed about this book, and yet, I learned something from it. The Messenger has its way of hooking me to unwrap the mystery that lies in the character mind, which is something I was curious about. Human nature making us so curious, but when it comes to animals, it doubles up the curiosity. Overall, this is an excellent book. I won't give anything else away other than to say that this was a terrific read, very intellectually written, with a flair that I haven't seen.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Just finished The Messenger and I loved it! The story tells of Ameliora By Suilyaniz Just finished The Messenger and I loved it! The story tells of Ameliora, a young wolf and her quest to destroy Rangatha, an evil wolf who bonded with the spirit of chaos. She is accompanied by another female wolf named Versitha and a male wolf named Nadav but I won't go into much more detail so as not to spoil the story for those who haven't read it. The messenger is highly original, interesting, well written and I just wanted to keep reading to find out what happened at the end. A great read!

Such as wrong names in places and such. I don't need to point it all out. But as a book lover it's not that bad to where it takes away from the story. If you think it does I'm sorry most people like that I have noticed will nitpick everything and can't enjoy a great book. That is why I have only done a couple of reviews for one other author. But I fell in love with Victoria Knight and her imagination. I have literally read at least over a thousand paranormal romance books and there are quite a few that I loved but her twist on the paranormal so far is so different and refreshing. So this is the second book in Veiled Series. I am curious to see what is really happening to Kara now. And What really is Nikki? I love that when I think I have the book all figured out , BOOM another twist or twists in this case. I can say anything more on that because not giving anything away. I'm loving this story. Fixing to start the 3rd now. I have no patience. But if you read the 1st. you have to read the 2nd. Especially with the cliffhangers....Which to all authors, I hate cliffhangers...lol

Thrilling, bloody, and sexy as hell By Lacy In darkness rising Saul and Nikki have to take on a pretty bad being and some shady work, all the while Nikki is learning her new gift. Family comes home and some new allies are made, with their new "crew " formed they have to take on the big bad to save each other and the new love that's blooming. Ok so that's my summary without giving away anything.. I absolutely loved this book. From the beginning their was action, blood, sex, supernatural beings, suspense, and so much more, basically everything I love reading about in these types of books. The author came up with very original beings and storyline, the whole time I was reading I could barely put my kindle down.. when I got to the end I was so involved that I was surprised when it ended, I wanted more!!!!!!! After I am done writing this I am gonna read the third book,I am now a huge fan of Victoria knight and the veiled series!!!!

By Susan Hachemeister After the cliffhanger at the end of the first book, I was impatient to get my hands on this one. I devoured this book in less than 4 hours! I'm not going to quibble about editing or than kind of thing. EVERY book I've read has them. They don't distract from the whirlwind action and fast paced plot. I've NEVER read a book quite like this before and I'm totally hooked. This is such an amazing retelling of vampire lore. I was hoping for a little more character insight for the 2nd book and I wasn't disappointed! There are so many twists & turns that you never get bored. I wasn't a totally fan of a 19 year old heroine either but Nikki totally rocks! I can't wait to start the next book!

The story continues where it left off. William had made the decision to love and protect Sydney instead of killing her. Sydney learned Noella her best friend had also been a bounty hunter, sent to kill her. Now they have all bonded together. To round out the group, the onboard system known as IMPI has agreed to also help. As he evolves, learning more and more human characteristics Sydney gives him the human name "Bill". William is sure his father has sent a fleet to take them all out. What William was unaware of, was that his father and his kingdom was under attack. There are evil plots all around them. Another team has been sent to earth to get rid of all of them. One of them is William's best friend. When he disposes of the other two, will he be able to convince his friend Arrion to join him? Sydey's godfather Henry and his girlfriend, astronomer Jasmine have been brought in to the situation. You would think with all of this protection that things would be going smoothly. Sydney, who has never had an illness or sickness in her life suffers a broken bone. Then there are the mood swings. What is happening to her and will whatever it be, end up killing her? There is enough suspense within these pages to keep you turning non-stop. Can't wait to read the next one.I received a copy to facilitate my review the opinions expressed here are my own.

Braxton Cosby continues to impress me with rich world building and intrigue. He really knows how to tell a compelling story with well-developed characters who must fight against all odds to keep the universe safe. I don't want to give anything away, but I will say that if you enjoyed Protostar, you will especially love Supernova as it unfolds more of the story between Will, Sydney, and their friends and enemies. You don't want to miss out, so grab a copy now!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thrilling and exciting book! By Fizza Younis The story of two star-crossed lovers continues in this second book. It is just as exciting as previous book. William and Sydney's relation develops further but not everything is as it should be. Firstly, Sydney is having hard time dealing with going back to school and seeing Jeff again. Her behaviour is very unpredictable and there might be more to it then what meets the eye. Secondly, threat to her life is not over and there is very real imminent danger. William has vowed to protect her but will he be able to is another question entirely.Across the galaxy and war is being waged. And hence thrill continues. Not a single boring moment in this awesome read. It kept me on my toes and second guessing everything. Ending was simply epic, I think it is a must read for sci-fic fans especially if you have read book one then you don't want to miss it. With well-developed characters, action, a little bit of mystery and a lot of drama & thrill, this book is highly entertaining. I am glad I get the chance to read it.

Taggart Lee has it all. Fame. Fortune. Everything except love. Tag is the jaded lead singer for 7’s Mistress, the biggest rock band in the world. After fifteen years in the business, he’s drowning in it all. When tragedy strikes, he takes a break from the road and the monotony his life has become. When he meets a gorgeous man on a park bench, he sees his lifeline. Dr. Erik Henrikson thought he’d met the one. He had. The wrong one. A year after his breakup, he still has a lock on his heart. Then he meets Lee, someone whose life has just been turned upside down. When he finds out Lee’s true identity, Erik throws away the key. Tag has two weeks to make the doctor want him. He has three months to prove he won’t hurt him. Tragedy brings them together. Lies and betrayal push them apart. Is love enough to deliver them? *This book contains explicit sexual acts between two men. Two very hot men.

Struggling to cope and having to re-evaluate his priorities, he meets Erik on a park bench. Erik, although he feels the attraction between them, needs to protect his heart after being hurt by his ex. Lee has two weeks to convince Erik to give it ago between them and three months on the road to prove he can be faithful. Can he do it?With plenty of other people out for a piece of them, it is not going to be easy for them. Lee and Erik are two amazing guys who come together to make an even more amazing couple, completing each other. This was a fast paced read with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. Whilst at times an emotional read, there are plenty of laugh out loud moments. There was certainly plenty of tense moments which complemented the sweet and hot moments between Lee and Erik perfectly.***Reviewed for LBM Book Blog***

A rocker falls in love with a doctor and there's a cute baby involved. Should be a winner but it's mostly an overused trope. The time from meeting, handing over the baby to someone you barely know, then deciding he's your soul-mate, waaay too fast. How could a multi- millionaire rock star not have had all the help he needed from the get-go? If the band was together for 15 years, why weren't they already more of a family? Then each having a whack-job friend was really too much. The ending and epilogue was very nice, everything wrapped up with a bow. So, it wasn't a terrible story, just not unique or engrossing.

I’m a sucker for gay rock-and-roll romance, but most, to be honest, are pale imitations of the best of the genre.“Deliver Me”, however, turned out to be a pleasant departure from the standard “singer meets guitarist” meme, a wonderful exploration of a life outside of the stage, studio and tour bus. The main characters are a wildly successful and famous rock star, Taggart Lee, frontman for 7’s Mistress, one of the hottest rock bands in the world, and a gorgeous and committed pediatrician, Erik Henrikson, his polar opposite. Erik is all about kids and family. Tag is all about fame and fortune. What happens when they meet is nothing less than worlds colliding, leaving both men changed forever. While out on tour, Tag gets some horrible news. His sister, who is pregnant with her first child, is in medical trouble at the local hospital, and Tag needs to hop a plane and get there before it’s too late.He doesn’t quite make it, and arrives only to mourn his beloved sister. However, the baby survives, and his sister has left strict instructions for Tag to raise her newborn daughter as his own. Tag doesn’t have a clue about raising babies, he’s completely lost and once Dee (Delilah) is released from post-natal care, he finds his arms filled with a struggling bundle of wailing baby, at a total loss as to what to do.Fortunately, as he awkwardly sits on a park bench, fumbling to sooth Dee, a man sits down and offers his help. Oh, for the kindness of strangers! The man picks up Delilah, who instantly calms. It’s only then that he notices that the man is nothing less than gorgeous, and obviously kind and caring. It is with gratitude and relief that he thanks the man, who generously offers tips for caring for the baby, and suggests that the baby’s formula is probably not right. How does this man know so much about babies? He’s obviously not straight, which becomes abundantly clear as their eyes lock. And he’s not some stalking fan, either, since he doesn’t seem to know or care who Tag is. The kind stranger’s final instruction is to set up the baby with a regular pediatrician; a trusted physician needs to monitor any newborn baby, especially a preemie.Dee is rapidly becoming the light of Tag’s life, all goes well for a few weeks, but something is obviously still wrong and the time has come to find a pediatrician. He goes to the Yellow pages and finds the doctor closet to his home and (you guessed it), it’s Erik, the handsome stranger he hadn’t dared hope to see again. Thus begins a remarkable relationship centered on a beautiful baby and two driven men with incredibly diverse lives. Is it even possible that anything can happen between them? It is, because they have one thing in common, the angelic Delilah.Tag has a daunting issue to deal with: he has to resume his tour, but absolutely cannot bring a newborn baby on the road with him. It’s not safe, it’s not healthy, to bring a newborn child on a bus, exposed to the Paparazzi and the insane fans who mob Tag, sometimes, in their frenzy, tearing his clothing and hair from his body. He can’t put Delilah at risk. So, he consults Erik, asking him to recommend a nanny or childcare that he’d trust with his niece for three months. Erik comes up with an outlandish solution: he’ll watch Delilah while Erik is on tour. He’d always wanted to raise a child, and he’d love to have one in his home, even if it’s only for a few months. As Erik says: “She needs someone. I need someone. We can be there for each other.”There’s another reason, though Erik leaves it unspoken: he’s falling for Tag, hard. He’s gun-shy because he’d been betrayed by his last lover, but with Delilah and Tag now woven deeply into the threads of his life, it almost seems that providence is at work building a new family for all three of them. There are two richly-drawn female secondary characters. Echo is a petite, but powerful, young woman who’s managed their band since the very beginning, a close, lifelong friend of all of them. She’s a great manager and confidant. She kicks butt when she needs to, rides right over their label, and cracks the whip at the venues - always in the band’s best interest. And she gives sage advice to Tag about more than his career, letting him know, in no uncertain terms, when he’s screwing up with Erik, making sure he’s always got his priorities straight.Erik has a BFF, too, Sarah, also his closest confidant. She is nowhere near as sanguine with Erik’s relationship with a rock star, always planting a little gossip in his ear to convince him that Tag is nothing but another rock-star-slut, planting salacious tabloid articles so that Erik will see them. In fact, she’s dangerous. She obviously has her own agenda working here, and it has nothing to do with Erik having a wonderful, loving relationship.Things do not all go smooth. Some of Sarah’s meddling inevitably gets through to Erik, who is never entirely sure that Tag is being faithful to him on the road. There’s a lot of clearing-the-air required, but these characters are two grown men, and with the help of Echo, manage to cut through the rumors, lies and fears. In a powerful, surprising, climax, Delilah, Erik, their dog and their home are put at risk, and someone dies right in front of them as the police look on, helpless to intervene. But no matter what happens, these three were meant to be a family, and they shall be one, come hell or high water. Ms. Gibson delivers a fully satisfying HEA to all of them.Faith Gibson is a fine writer. Her characters are vivid and real. Tag’s terror at taking on a newborn baby is palpable, Erik’s growing love for the delightful Delilah will touch your heart. There’s more than a bit of melodrama in this book, but then again, it’s about a rock star, someone who, by his very nature, is bigger than life. She’s done a fine job with “Deliver Me” and I look forward to whatever comes next in this fascinating series.Alan reviews gay fiction for Sinfully Gay Romance Book Reviews

**Note** This is a flash fiction piece of work meaning that it is under 1000 words.** Set in the 1930-1940s. Sometimes things are not what they seem to be and a girl working for a dance bar is not just a girl looking for a paycheck at the end of the day...sometimes she wants something more.
