By dalton williams Awesome read!I had heard venom had several failed solo sereies before this, and now I see why. He needed the Flash Thompson retribution element. There's an entire chspter that focuses solely on flash and his father and it is glorious. Of course venom's vicous fights break up the great drama to make for an excellent read

Powerless (The Hero Agenda), by Tera Lynn Childs, Tracy Deebs

From School Library Journal Gr 7–10—Even though she doesn't have a superpower herself, Kenna has grown up immersed in superhero culture. After a group of villains break into her mother's lab, Kenna's outlook on the superhero world starts to unravel as she realizes that the do-gooders she has always admired are engaging in malicious deeds. Now she must work with the most unlikely of characters (villians!) in order to set things right. There is no shortage of action as this band of teenagers tries to sneak into several well-guarded facilities, but unfortunately other aspects of the novel don't hold together as well. Characters such as Kenna's rebellious best friend "Rebel" and her "dark-and-scowly" love interest are not very original or well developed. While teens in these situations may spend a lot of time arguing about what next step to take, too much of the novel is spent on the characters' bickering. The major theme explored here is the thin line between good and evil, and while there is an interesting parallel that can be drawn to the current actions of U.S. government organizations, most of Kenna's narrative is lacking in subtlety. With a cliff-hanger ending and plenty of dangling threads, there is ample opportunity for a sequel. Marie Lu's The Young Elites (Putnam, 2014) offers a more nuanced portrait of young superheroes and Cory Doctorow's Little Brother (Tor, 2008) presents a better glimpse into corrupt government behavior. VERDICT Fans of fast-paced action and superhero books may enjoy this, but readers looking for more complexity should search elsewhere.—Carrie Shaurette, Dwight-Englewood School, Englewood, NJ

Chapter 1

If I could have any superpower, right now, I'd choose the ability to reach through glass. One thin, little pane is all that separates me from bliss...of the midnight-snack variety, to be exact. The chocolate bar hangs halfway to freedom but refuses to take the plunge, as if the vending machine is mocking me, taunting me.

As if it knows I'm powerless.

Annoyed, I slam my palms against the glass. Everything inside shudders. My chocolate bar-pure Swiss milk chocolate dotted with toasted hazelnuts-doesn't budge.

"Come on," I beg as if the candy can hear me. "Just a little farther."

No such luck.

Then again, when have I ever been lucky? I'm just glad no heroes are around to see me lose a battle with a vending machine. I would be the punch line to every joke for a year.

Thankfully, the lab is pretty much empty at this time of night. Even Mom went home two hours ago, leaving me to transcribe the notes from today's sessions. I prefer to work when no one is around. My experiments fall into a gray area in the Superhero Code of Conduct, and even though I'm not technically a superhero-yet-I try not to piss off the powers-that-be. The last thing I need is to lose my lab privileges before I've perfected my formula.

Copying down Mom's scribblings is like deciphering some previously unknown ancient language. It isn't exactly the most glamorous summer job ever, but it pays okay and gives me access to the facility.

I'm almost done with tonight's transcription from the digital white board Mom and her team spent all day filling with chemical equations for her newest power-enhancing formula. Maybe twenty more minutes, and then I can get back to my test samples.

My stomach rumbles in protest, reminding me that I skipped dinner. I really want that stupid chocolate bar. But since I just used my last quarters, my only hope is that one of the security guards upstairs has change for a ten.

I turn away from the vending machine alcove and start back around the corner to grab my wallet from the lab.

Right before I make the turn, I hear hurried footsteps. Not wanting a repeat of last week's collision with Dr. Harwood-my favorite jeans still smell like sulfur-I hang back a step.

But the boy who rushes around the corner looks nothing like the balding, old scientist who works nearly as many late nights as I do.

No, this guy is tall and lean, but not too skinny. He's got major biceps and I can see the outline of some pretty impressive muscles beneath his shirt. Yum. He's probably about my age or a little older, eighteen or nineteen maybe. And everything about him is shrouded in black-his tee and jeans, his heavy-duty boots, his shoulder-length hair-everything but his eyes.

If we weren't in superhero central, I'd say he looks like a stereotypical villain.

You'd think with all that darkness, he'd be nothing more than shadow. But he's all angles: his cheekbones, his jaw, even the collarbones I can see peeking out from the low neckline of his tee. Light seems to reflect off him like moon glow at midnight. Surrounded by all that sculpted darkness, his icy blue irises burn like the hottest flames.

Our gazes collide, and though I know it's vain, I instantly wish my hair wasn't pulled back in a messy braid and that I was wearing something-anything-more appealing than my dad's ratty old 1996 Stanley Cup Champions tee.

Hot guys in the underground lab are few and far between-Who am I kidding? Hot guys in my life are few and far between-so most of my wardrobe choices involve comfort and whether I mind if the garment gets ruined by acid, dye, or any of a million other compounds we work with every day.

If my best friend, Rebel, were here, she'd be doing an I-told-you-so dance because she's been wanting to give me a makeover forever. That, and she'd already have his number and email address, and they'd be making plans for their date this weekend. Me, I can't even manage a simple "hello."

The fact that he's scowling at me, those dark brows slashing low over those bright eyes, isn't helping anything.

"The lab is supposed to be empty," he says.

His voice is flat, but his comment almost feels like an accusation.

"I'm working late," I answer, trying not to sound defensive. "What are you doing here?"

He lifts an eyebrow. "You're working in the hall?"

"I needed a break to come get chocolate," I say, gesturing at the vending machine behind me.

He nods down at my empty hands. "You don't have any chocolate."

"That thing hates me. Took my money and kept the candy bar."

In a graceful movement that looks almost choreographed, Dark-and-Scowly steps around me and up to the greedy machine. He presses his palms to the glass, just like I did. Hey, maybe he has the power to reach through glass. After all, around here pretty much everyone but me has some kind of super ability.

When his hands don't immediately sink through the surface, I say, "I tried smacking it already. Didn't work."

Moving his hands closer to the edge, he curls his fingers around the frame. Then, with his boots braced on the floor, he gives the whole machine a solid shove. The heavy hunk of metal rocks back once, then comes forward, its front legs hitting the tile floor with a sharp thud. On impact, the chocolate bar sails against the glass before falling into the trough below.

He turns to face me, a cocky smile twisting one side of his mouth. "Takes a special touch."

I duck down and reach through the hinged door to grab the candy bar.

"You're my hero," I joke.

He snorts. "Right."

I stand up, chocolate clutched safely in my hand. There's an awkward silence that stretches into uncomfortable territory. When I can't take it anymore, I wag the candy and say, "Well, thanks."

I start to walk around him, to head back to the lab, when he steps into my path.

"So, what boring work do you have to take breaks from?"

I try to sound casual, like I'm not eager to keep talking to him. "I'm transcribing notes in the manipulation lab."

As I point down the same hall he came from, he turns his head to follow the direction of my gesture. I automatically check for the mark of the League beneath his right ear. If it's there, I can't see it behind his hair. He could be a hero. Or he could be an ordinary, just like me.

Suddenly self-conscious, I tug a piece of hair forward to cover my unmarked skin.

When he looks at me again, his scowl is back in place and even deeper.

He asks, "You're working in Dr. Swift's lab?"

"She's my mom. I'm helping her out." I shrug. "There are worse summer jobs."

He gaze skims over me. "You're Kenna Swift?"

And that's the end of that.

My mom is famous in hero circles. She's developed more than a dozen different formulas for the superhero world, from sprays that thaw victims of freeze rays to supplements that keep thought-readers out of someone's mind. She's earned the League Medal of Valor three times. And those were just for the inventions they know about. She's their very own Einstein, Edison, and Jobs rolled into one.

The only thing I'm famous for is being the powerless daughter of a superhero. My dad was one of the best of the best. And I'm...nothing.

I shift my weight, wanting to redirect the conversation away from me. "You never answered my question. What are you doing down here so late?"

Those bright blue eyes sear into me as he takes a step back. "I have to go."

His sudden evasiveness makes me suspicious, so when he starts to move past me, I sidestep into his path. "Excuse me," I say, "but this is a secure level. Are you even authorized to be down here?"

"My dad," he says, scowling at me. "He's a security guard."

A security guard? The facility might be so big that I can't keep track of everyone who works in every lab, but I know all the guards by name. Especially the night guards, since I'm usually the last one here.

Travis and Luther are on duty tonight. Travis and his wife just had their first baby, a girl named Tia. Luther is old enough to be my great-grandfather and he never married.

I take half a step back as my suspicions turn to concern. "Who's your dad?" I demand.

This guy definitely has the look of a villain.

What if he really is one?

He glances nervously over his shoulder. "He's-"

I shake my head and start to walk away before he can finish the lie.

He reaches for me, but I shrug him off. My heart is beating way too fast. This could go way bad, way quick.

"Please, just listen." He waits until I'm looking him in the eye before he continues. "You know me," he says, his voice taking on this weird, hypnotic tone. "We've met before."

His eyes start to burn brighter and brighter. Oh crap. He must be a villain, and one with a psy power. The vilest kind. Fear and anger collide inside me as I wonder what to do about him trying to mess with my head. How to play this? I can't exactly tell him I'm-

Suddenly, the floor beneath my feet shudders violently, knocking me off balance. I lurch forward into Dark-and-Scowly's arms. He catches me, grabs my upper arms, just as a concussion wave of air and sound hits us.

That sounded-and felt-like a bomb went off in the lab. If we weren't a hundred feet underground and shielded by every protection science and superheroes can create, I'd think the supervillain Quake had struck. But that's impossible.

Then again, impossible doesn't always apply in the superhero world. After all, impossible didn't keep Dark-and-Scowly from being where he doesn't belong.

Suddenly, every alarm in the facility blares. I freak. The lab! All that research-Mom's and mine-is priceless. The superhero blood samples alone are more valuable than anything else in the building.

Panic overrides judgment and I push away, but his grip only tightens. The jerk. A little super strength would be really useful right now.

"You can't go in there."

"Who are you?" I demand, struggling to get out of his grasp. If he really is a villain, I don't want him near me or this lab. Not with what villains are capable of. "What have you done?"

He doesn't answer. More pissed than ever, I fake left and pull right. He follows my fake-out, and as his hair swings with the momentum, I see the mark I'd been looking for earlier. Not under his right ear like the superheroes. Under his left.

Shit.

"You're a villain." It's not a question. I struggle harder. "What did you do? Let me go!"

"Don't!" he shouts above the roaring sirens. "If you go in there, you could get hurt. They're upset-"

I might not have superpowers, but I know how to knee a guy in the nuts. Before he can finish his sentence, he's doubled over, gasping for breath. I dash for the corner, but I don't get two steps before his hand clamps around my elbow.

"No, Kenna, you can't!" he shouts. "Trust me. If you-"

Anger overwhelms me. I've spent my whole life running from villains-from what they've done to my family. From what they might do to me. And I'm sick of it. I'm fed up with the whole steer-clear-of-anything-remotely-dangerous thing my mom's had me doing for so long.

Just because I don't have a power doesn't mean I'm powerless.

I turn on him with a furious growl and, using the karate-chop technique Rebel taught me, land a solid hit to the side of his neck. He releases me and I wrench open the door to the janitor's closet, use my entire body weight to shove him inside, then slam the door in his stunned face.

Holding the door handle with one hand, I use my other to dig out my security badge. I run it over the reader pad until I hear the lock engage. I leave him pounding against the door.

Who's the helpless ordinary now?

I sprint down the hall and around the corner to find the area outside the lab full of smoke. I hold my arm up to my face, covering my mouth with my sleeve as I look around.

The windows that line the wall between the lab and the hall have shattered, covering the floor with a million shards of safety glass. No ordinary bomb could have done that. Whoever that v-bag in the closet is, he obviously has help. There's another villain here. One with some kind of explosive power.

For a moment, fear paralyzes me. A villain like that killed my father, used his evil power to blow Dad up right in front of me. That same villain would have killed me if the heroes hadn't come along and stopped him. I was only four, but I remember watching my dad die. One moment he was yelling for me to run. And the next he was gone, nothing more than scorch marks on the tile.

Rage rips through me at the memory, burning away the last of my fear and sending me careening straight toward the lab. Villains have already taken my father from me. No way are they getting their disgusting paws on my mother's lab-and my research-too. Between the smoke and the strobe lights from the fire alarms, the lab looks like a better-lit version of the club Rebel always wants to go to. Or a designated disaster area.

Through the haze, I pull open the door. I know every inch of the lab by heart. Even smoke-blind, I can find my way to the emergency ventilation button.

Weaving around stools and counters, I hurry along the front edge of the room. Seconds later my stomach connects with the counter that lines the far wall. I lean forward, tracing my fingers up the tile until I feel the big, red button.

I smack my palm against the plastic. A whooshing sound fills the lab, so powerful it almost drowns out the alarm sirens. Faster than I expect, smoke gets sucked up and out of the room through the massive vent in the middle of the ceiling. As the haze dissipates, the shadow of a figure emerges. A man stands in the back corner of the lab, facing the vault.

And the door is wide open.

I'm too late. I've failed.

"No," I whisper, terrified at what the villains might get their hands on.

I have to find a way to warn the League. Right now. The system automatically sends alerts, but there have been a number of false alarms lately. I don't want them to dismiss this as another one.

I glance around wildly and see my cell phone charging on the other side of the lab.

Using the counter to push off, I launch myself into a sprint. Only I don't take into account the stool I had pulled into the center of the room while working on the transcription earlier. I crash into it and send myself stumbling into the nearest lab table.

"What have we here?" a sneering voice asks with a crisp British accent.

I turn to the guy standing in front of the vault. Like Dark-and-Scowly, he's dressed in all black. Must be the standard-issue villain uniform these days. Except that his shock of red hair-which is currently standing on end-and the look of surprise on his face make him seem more startled-matchstick than villain-capable-of-blowing-up-the-vault.

That is, until he narrows his eyes at Dark-and-Scowly, who has somehow appeared in the blown-out doorway. I have a moment to wonder how the hell he got out of the janitor's closet before Matchstick hisses, "I thought you were supposed to take care of problems like this."

"I am," Dark-and-Scowly answers. "I've got everything under control."

The other guy snorts. "Don't look like it to me."

"You'd better go," I tell them, disappointed by the unsteady tremble in my voice. I'm still angry, but the fear is creeping back in. I'm trapped down here in this lab with two villains. The last time I was this close to the bad guys, my father was murdered and I...I was-

I cut off that train of thought before it can go anywhere. I'm not that helpless little girl anymore, and anyone who thinks otherwise is going to be in for a big shock.

"Leave now," I tell them. "Before it's too late."

Matchstick starts toward me. "Why is that, sweetheart?"

"The guards are coming." I steel myself for whatever comes next. "Their response time is less than thirty seconds."

He starts laughing before I finish. Smirking, he says, "Your guards aren't coming. Aren't even in the building." He steps into the center aisle. "They took an unexpected vacation."

I don't want to believe him-he's a villain, after all-but the cockiness in his tone tells me that, at the very least, he believes the guards are gone. Besides, it's been at least thirty seconds since the alarms started blaring. Help should be here by now.

Which means I'm on my own.

Calling the League is the only option.

I try not to think just how badly a confrontation with two villains can go as I glance at my phone, still twenty feet away, and then back at the redheaded villain. His eyes flick to the counter, and when his gaze returns to me, he's shaking his head. He can't have missed my hot-pink case against the stainless-steel countertop.

Matchstick spreads his arms wide, his fingers stretched to maximum breadth, and his palms begin to glow. And I stop breathing.

This isn't going to be good.

By Lauren So the world is literally full of heroes and villains, both of whom have powers. Kenna is the daughter of a hero.. her mom is basically a genius that works at a super secret hero facility doing lab experiments to help develop more hero powers or instruments to aid the good guys. Kenna spends her days and nights in the lab helping her mom and doing little experiments for herself. She is powerless. She's what the heroes and villains call an ordinary. One night some villains break into the lab looking for a relative that they believe is being held captive by the heroes. Kenna holds her own, even with no powers. But she isn't exactly powerless. She is also immune to other people's powers. This is a well kept secret between Kenna and her mom, who used her genius skills to develop a serum for Kenna to take on the regular to stay immune to danger. And here comes the real interesting part... Kenna stops seeing the heroes and villains as good and bad/white and black. She sees there's a grey area. Now she meets a slew of new people with devastating information that changes everything she's ever known. This was definitely a fast paced novel with some quick YA romance. I needed a little more world-building to get a better feel of the place. I'm also a little bored of the teenagers falling in love after 3 days of life or death action, but I think I'm just getting old. This was an interesting read, but it felt too short and that a lot of details were missing.

By Dark Faerie Tales Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales [...]Quick & Dirty: All heroes aren’t good and not all villains are evil.Opening Sentence: If I could have any superpower, right now, I’d choose the ability to reach through the glass. The Review:This was a fun, action-packed read set in a world of heroes and villains where almost everyone has a power, except Kenna. Her being ‘powerless’ is what makes her special but not in a good way. Although she is vulnerable, her genius mother has created a secret serum of immunity shots. As long as Kenna takes these once a week she is immune to all powers. The story is based around Kenna’s encounter with the villains and realisation that not all villains are bad. Similarly, heroes aren’t all that great either, sometimes committing heinous crimes under the radar. The book explores stereotypes, illustrating that not everything is black and white, good or bad, without getting too deep that you feel you need to re-evaluate your life!Three days ago, I was an ordinary girl in a superhero world. It wasn’t ideal, but it was tolerable. It was normal. It made sense. Black was black, and white was white. Good was good, and bad was…bad. Villains were bad.Now everything is topsy-turvy. Nothing makes sense. And as for life being black and white? I feel like I’m drowning in a million shades of gray. Like the suits of the Ray-Ban brigade. The writing was good, it kept me interested but it was also quite simple, verging on the younger spectrum of young adults. The idea about villains not all being bad was repeated so many times that I felt like shouting, ‘yes we got the message the first 10 times!’I loved Kenna’s courage, particularly when she comes face to face with villains for the first time and is under the impression that all villains are murderers. She has no powers per se, but uses her brains and quick-thinking to help her out. Most people would freeze or freak out if faced by an out of control villain aiming fireballs at them but Kenna grabs a fire extinguisher! However, there were times when she was too logical, almost robotic in her actions, which started to annoy me.The love story between Kenna and Draven was very predictable but I still thought it was cute and I think it fits well, given the target audience. The couple argues like crazy, started with completely opposing beliefs but beneath it was a good chemistry.Only a few days ago, I despised villains as much as he clearly despises heroes. I’ve changed, but he obviously hasn’t.It hurts more than I want it to.I enjoyed the comedy element to ‘Powerless,’ especially when it involved characters like Jeremy, Kenna’s extremely paranoid ex-boyfriend who happens to be an IT geek. Another character that repeatedly made me laugh was Nitro, the fireball villain. His lack of control and disinterest in burning people by accident was fun to read, especially when he accidentally burns one of his own friends in one of his tempers.“Well, that’s a little rude,” Nitro interjects, obviously offended. “I never talk s*** about your powers.”“Because Draven never loses control of his powers,” Fauxhawk tells him, as he gestures to the burned and broken lav. “Do I need to remind you of what happened two weeks ago?”“Wow. Set a few things on fire and suddenly everyone’s a critic.”“Me!” Fauxhawk shouts. “You set me on fire!”“I said I was sorry!”“Like that makes it better? You burned off half my hair.”“Stop being such a drama queen, Dante.” Nitro rolls his eyes. “It’s growing back, isn’t it?”Some YA reads are too romantic and without being sexist, I would say they are written with a female audience in mind but I think Powerless is a perfect read for boys and girls alike. It has adventure, humour, a little romance and lots of action, so I’d recommend it to everyone looking for a light, fun read.Notable Scene:“What went wrong,” Dante growls, “is you locked us in a refrigerator. You sided with the heroes and now everything has gone to s***. What kind of villain are you?”FTC Advisory: Sourcebooks Fire provided me with a copy of Powerless. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Fast-paced, full of action and an exploration of whether Heroes are actually the good guys By Aila Jiang I received an ARC from the author and yes, I assure you, this is an honest review.I started this book at 1:30 am in the morning because I'm currently suffering from jetlag after my trip to China. Before I knew it, I finished the book and it was 4 am. Yeah, terrible for my jetlag, but I couldn't put the book down!Fast-paced and exciting, Powerless is about a world where class hierarchy is divided into Ordinaries, Heroes, and Villains. Although the main character Kenna lives in the Heroes world, she doesn't have any powers herself. Despite that fact, she holds herself up really well in the book. I enjoyed her character a lot, especially when her reactions in certain situations were so relatable. Sometimes I'll get annoyed or frustrated by characters who do dumb stuff (or DON'T do stuff in general), but Kenna had reasonable reactions.Honestly, the only complaint I have with the book is an explanation of, well, the world. Modern references are used, such as the Vulcan symbol or SWAT team so it HAS to occur in present-day, but how do the Villains and Heroes integrate themselves into society? How does their own separate hierarchy conflict with our own, such as the government? (Because please, why do you need a president when there's a Heroes League?) One of the Villains even mention going to school... so are there separate schools for people with powers? The authors never go through the logistics of it, and I couldn't help but wonder. Of course, the exclusion of such details makes it more easier for the reader to get caught up with the action going on, so it's not that big of a deal for me. Still, it would've been nice to see a little more background.Speaking of action, the book is filled with it from start to finish. I guess it sucked that I chose THIS book to read at 2 in the morning because no way was I able to go to sleep after starting it. Right off the bat, the lab Kenna works out gets infiltrated by - gasp - villains. However, they're not what they seem at first. And after this develops the obligatory "what's wrong and what's right" question that is so popular in literature these days. Because yeah, the world is shades of gray and just because you're labeled as a hero doesn't mean you ARE one.The romance was cute and enjoyable to read about, although a little quick at first. There is definitely insta-attraction, but from there on I think it progresses at a more realistic rate as Kenna is conflicted over having feelings for a Villain (who may not be that villainous). This book explores how people can use their powers - for good or bad, and the fine line in between. Add a strong main character and a ragtag crew that wants justice against the Heroes this time, and you have an awesome book that begs to be read.

It was packed full of adventure and suspense, and there's a hint of romance in it, too. Dare was so dynamic and beautifully written, I couldn’t put it down. I was pulled into the action immediately and held captive by the inner struggle that surrounded Third Blade, Leith Torren, and his forbidden friendship with Renna and Brandi, the sisters whose family he allowed to be brutally killed by the Blades. Their choice to save him was their death sentence. His choice to spare them was his.Impossible things become possible with God in this amazing, redemptive story. I highly recommend this book to people who like action and suspense (and the hint of romance.) It's appropriate for both teens and adults alike. I cannot wait until the next book comes out. The ending made me want to read it NOW!

Fryling I tend to be wary of books categorized as "Christian __", as I feel like an honest word or a quick salvation is thrown in as an add-on to an already-used plot.. However, I was thoroughly impressed by this novel! The story was captivating, the characters were authentic, and the Gospel was presented in such a way as not to preach but rather to demonstrate its redemptive power. It was woven into the story so that the character's lives couldn't be separated from The Message. Isn't that how life should be?Swords, secrecy, conflict, romance-everything to keep an adult engaged, and a 10-year-old from putting the book down.My only complaint is that I have to wait until the Fall for book #2!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I felt as if this book were written for me! By JDowell Have you ever felt paralyzed by fear? Have you ever watched events unfold and know you could stop them or change them if only you had enough courage? Have you ever hated yourself for your lack of bravery? If the answer to any of these questions is “Yes!” then you share something in common with the two main characters of Tricia Mingerink’s debut novel, Dare.Third Blade Leith Torren, one of King Respen’s most trusted assassins, is wounded on one of his missions for the king and finds himself at the mercy of two girls whose parents’; deaths he was responsible for four years ago. Renna uses her skills as a healer to save his life though she fears for her own and that of her sister’s should he learn of their forbidden faith. If she was brave she would not hide it from this wounded stranger. If she were brave she could forgive him for his part in her parents’ deaths. But Renna is not brave. As Leith is slowly nursed back to health he dreads the day he will be well enough to return to the king. If he was brave he would have stayed out in the cold and bled to death, rather than bring trouble on this family. If he was brave he would lie to the king about what he has seen and heard. But Leith is not brave. And the day is getting closer when he will need to make a decision.I felt as if this book were written for me. Like Renna, I am a very introverted person, especially when placed in uncertain situations. I have felt that same fear and uncertainty that she experiences (though, in my case, I have never feared for my life), that holds her back. I have experienced that same temptation to hide behind my fear and tell myself I am not one of those “brave people” who take risks. I felt for Leith as he struggled with his own fear, for his life, and for his soul. I sympathized with the supporting characters as they tried to share their faith with those they cared about, watching them struggle to believe in a God that loves them. From the very first line, the plot and the characters snatched me into their story. I felt as if I was living the events with them. There are characters everyone can relate to and admire, from the tortured Leith Torren to the fearful Renna Faythe, and her fearless sister, Brandi. The character development in this book was phenomenal. If you secretly love books that make it impossible for you to do anything “productive”, this is a book for you. I anxiously await the sequel!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Love this couple, especially Freddy By Malissa Coy (Reads All the Books) I really enjoyed this truly sweet story about love, growing up, forgiveness, and redemption.Poor Amber and Freddy, they fell hard, they fell fast, and then they fell apart. I loved Anna's storyline for Amber during her last year of high school. She does an amazing job of putting down on paper what it is like to fall in love that young, how it pulls you and surrounds you in these amazing feelings and makes it hard to focus on anything else but the person you are with, especially for someone like Amber who is a challenging home life. Now you know from the onset of this story that Amber and Freddy don't make it through their young romance, the book opens with Amber rushing back after a 10 year absence to her small town home village to help her ailing estranged mother, running in to her high school best friend, and then the heart wrenching appearance of Freddy at her door.I loved how we get the entire back story between these two, rather than just a flash back and then their current story. It was almost like reading two books of the same series in one and I am so glad it was just the one because if we'd been left with what I know would have been the stopping point for 'book one' I may have just thrown my Kindle across the room, haha. Now I will say that there are a lot of choices made in the book, mainly by Amber, that make me want to shake the heck out of the characters. Even with that, I loved this group of characters. They were so real and refreshing. Amber's relationship with her best friend made me flash back to my high school best friend. I enjoyed how there wasn't this ugliness underneath their friendship that we seem to see in a lot of books. Was there trouble, was there jealousy, yes...but that happens, what is important is that they stick together. Even after years of separation there is still friendship.Freddy and Amber fell into that insta-love that sometimes grates on my nerves, but in this instance it felt real, different, refreshing. And can I tell you how much I adore Freddy? I mean he just amazed me at every turn, seriously if I'd have been Amber I'd have been head over heels as well. Although I do question what he's done for 10 years while Amber was away. We basically know what happens with her romantically, but we don't get any of his romantic background for those 10 years. Now my romantic heart just wants to believe that he simply pined over Amber, working in his garage and never looking at another woman, but 10 years is a long time. It might have broken my heart to know it, but I think being able to see how he truly spent those years would have been nice, no matter if he did spend those years a hermit or a womanizer . The thing I love about Freddy though is he's not perfect and is never made out to be, but he is perfect for Amber and he's just an incredibly kind and sweet guy.In the end the book is really about Ambers' redemption, about finding the love of her family and friends. About knowing that she was never given up on. They waited, everyone of them waited for her return and I love that. I love that she didn't come back to a place full of hate and had to fight for acceptance. I love that what she truly had to fight was herself and that everyone else was there loving her as they always had, except maybe Henry...and well just like everyone in the story we'll just ignore him *wink*.This is a beautiful read for any Contemporary Romance fan. You'll want to snuggle up with this one, it's not overly emotional or painful read, just something you'll want to get comfy with and enjoy a wonderful HEA. I will say for any American readers you might want to have google handy, I had to look up a number of UK English words, haha, but they won't detract from the story.

Her motherwas overbearing and very negative about everything. One snowy night when Amber’s car breaks down, her life is changed forever. Thegarage she ends up at belongs to the Bale family with none other than the gorgeousFreddy Bale at her service.Their love story is a whirlwind romance that neither can stop. Both are consumedby each other. They know this is real for them both but everyone around themthinks they are too young and are going to fast. When a tragic accident occurs, their fears are brought to the surface. Amber lovesFreddy and will do anything to be with him including going to a Uni close to home.Freddy loves Amber to but doesn’t want to hold her back from her dreams. Hedecides to let her go. He didn’t know that she would runaway from everyone whenhe did.Ten years later, Amber returns home to look after her mom whose health is failing. She was hoping that see wouldn’t have to see Freddy again.Time and distance haven’t put out the flame between them and now all cards are onthe table.I really enjoyed this young adult love story. The author did a wonderful job with theflow of the story from present day to the past and back to the present.I loved Amber and Freddy. The author focused on quite a bit of issues for both ofthem and there was never a dull moment. I was sad to see it come to an end.

Then the guy stole her heart comes by surprisingly. You learn how they came together and what tore them apart. Now, I honestly wasn't sure going in. At first, I wasn't into the story. But something happened. I started to love it. I fell in love with Amber and Freddy's story. Though they had been away from each for a long time, their love didn't end. The secret she had, that had to have been tough. Going through 10 years by herself, never truly being at home.Amber made a lot of tough decisions. Ones, she regrets. Ones, she wishes she never made. But such is life and you can't look at the past. You have to see what's in your present and what your future could be.Bloom, really writes a wonderful story about love and forgiveness. Love isn't easy and I don't think it's suppose to be. I love how she writes, a true love story....Lissa

Ebook PDF Talker 25, by Joshua McCune

Debut author Joshua McCune's gritty and heart-pounding novel is a masterful reimagining of popular dragon fantasy set in a militant future reminiscent of Paolo Bacigalupi's Ship Breaker and Ann Aguirre's Outpost. The Horn Book called it "absolutely gripping and absolutely horrifying."

It's a high-school prank gone horribly wrong—sneaking onto the rez to pose next to a sleeping dragon—and now senior Melissa Callahan has become an unsuspecting pawn in a war between Man and Monster, between family and friends and the dragons she has despised her whole life. Chilling, epic, and wholly original, this debut novel imagines a North America where dragons are kept on reservations, where strict blackout rules are obeyed no matter the cost, where the highly weaponized military operates in secret, and where a gruesome television show called Kissing Dragons unites the population. Joshua McCune's debut novel offers action, adventure, fantasy, and a reimagining of popular dragon lore. "The story packs significant punch."—Publishers Weekly

Talker 25, by Joshua McCune

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—In this debut novel, McCune creates a dystopian fantasy world in which humans are pitted against dragons. The United States military declares the winged creatures their number one enemy, and protagonist Mel finds herself kidnapped by the pro-dragon insurgency group to whichher deceased mother (who was killed by a dragon) once belonged. After spending time bonding with dragons, the military recaptures her, and Mel is kept with other teens to be "reconditioned": they must communicate telepathically with dragons in order to lure them to their deaths. At this point in the story, the tone shifts from middle school-appropriate to teen. Alcohol and sex are awkwardly interjected and seem unnecessary to the plot or character development. An amusing website based upon a dragon reality show portrayed in the book shows promise, yet it ultimately falls short of its potential. This is a fast-paced adventure, but the abrupt ending feels rushed. The book's weakness lies in the heavy borrowing from popular trilogies. The emphasis on "insurgents" is reminiscent of Veronica Roth's books, as is the mind control and monitoring of thoughts and dreams. Like Suzanne Collins's Katniss, Mel undergoes makeup and costume changes for the cameras (she portrays herself in televised reenactments of dragon battles). Although lacking in originality, Talker 25 may have the familiarity and action-oriented storytelling that ravenous fans of the genre will enjoy.—Laura Falli, McNeil High School, Austin, TX

From Booklist Melissa Callahan is Talker 25, a name given her when she is imprisoned for being an Insurgent, a person who has joined the dragons fighting against the U.S. military. Hidden in a frozen Antarctica outpost, Melissa is forced to communicate with the dragons, trying to lure them into dangerous traps. Once captured, Melissa and the other Talkers must torture the gigantic animals while they themselves are enduring equally perverse tortures that force them into submission. Debut author McCune has created a unique world that readers will find both horrifying and compelling: good and evil are relative, and right and wrong are compromised. Are the dragons evil for killing humans to protect their children? Are Melissa and her fellow Talkers evil for participating in the torture of these animals to protect their families and themselves from similar tortures? Has the military manipulated dragons to frighten and control the citizenry? Be prepared—Talker 25 will stretch your ability to absorb and endure Melissa’s disturbingly graphic existence as she defies the soldiers’ determination to break her will and force her to turn against the dragons that trust her. Grades 9-12. --Frances Bradburn

Review “Absolutely gripping and absolutely horrifying, Talker 25 is a sort of fantasy Gulag Archipelago, an account of the stripping down of humanity under extreme duress. That McCune manages an upbeat ending is a surprising feat, but readers will be left shaken by what came before.” (The Horn Book)

With themes dealing with the ethics of war and safety versus tolerance, there is a whole lot to think about in addition to the fast-paced action. And fantasy dragon lore set in realistic modern times? Yes, please! I must admit that, as an animal lover and general softie, some parts of it were pretty hard for me to take, but they really drove home the themes and made me sympathize even more with the main characters, who are put in extremely tough situations. I couldn't put it down, I can't stop thinking about it, and I definitely can't wait for the sequel!

After years of battles and millions dead, there has recently been a fragile peace between the humans and the different-colored dragons. Reds and Blues mostly stay in packs, but Greens are the ones you have to watch out for, as they will kill anything in sight. Melissa knows this all too well as her mother died from a Green when Melissa was very young. Ever since then, Melissa, her brother, and her father have lived on a military base surrounding a giant pit filled with dragons who seem to be up to something. If you ask, most people would say that all the dragons should be wiped out as they are simply too dangerous. But there is a small band of people, insurgents, who sympathize with the dragons --- and rumor has it they can also talk to them. Melissa’s mother was an insurgent and could talk to dragons, unbeknown to most people, and Melissa discovers on a random night as her and her friends go ‘dragon hunting’ that she can also talk to dragons. Armed with this special skill, Melissa’s life changes forever --- but not in the ways you would expect.First, a planned attack against the dragons ends up leveling the military base, and Melissa finds herself in the company of the insurgents and her mother’s old friends. There Melissa discovers what the dragons have been up to: they are breeding. Their offspring, silver dragons, possess freezing ability, quite the opposite of what you would expect from fire-breathing dragons. The dragons will do anything to protect their young and Melissa realizes that, just like her mother, she is going to have to choose a side.At this point in the novel, I thought for sure I had figured out what TALKER 25 was going to be all about. Melissa would choose to fight with the dragons, there would probably be a couple of spectacular battles, she would probably betray her family’s trust, and the story would end with a cliffhanger that would set the story up for the next book in the series. Instead, TALKER 25 goes somewhere completely different. In a unique twist, Melissa ends up being captured and shuttled off to a secret military base in Antarctica where the military uses children who can talk to dragons to eliminate them one by one. Melissa is slowly reconditioned and becomes Talker 25, and she must use her unique power to hunt the creatures she grew to love. After reading countless fantasy books about dragons, I thought for sure it would be amazing if they existed in real life. TALKER 25 takes this premise and provides a harrowing realistic worldview that has made me think twice. I never really stopped and considered what harm powerful dragons could inflict upon humanity nor to what lengths those in power would go to prevent such harm. There is also a very astute social commentary about reality television in TALKER 25 that I will just let you discover on your own. You don’t want to miss it or this refreshing take on the mysterious --- and deadly --- dragon.Reviewed by Benjamin Boche.

I've been reading mostly romance novels for as long as I can remember. But, what can I say? Romance gets old. So, I've been dipping my toes into other pools of fantasy and came upon Talker 25. Being that I'm a sucker for a good cover, I thought I'd give it a shot. However, if the inside doesn't match the outside, I'm no longer hesitant to quit half way through a book. I don't believe in wasting time on poor writing and bad characters when there are so many other books to read.Well, after that lengthy intro, I'll just say I am hooked. As others have said, there was violence and darkness. I sometimes wanted to close my eyes, but mostly there were characters I really grew to care about. The writing style was excellent. The dragons were awesome. I want to know what happens next!

Will Feltman does a wonderful job of capturing the reader's attention By Emily Heldt Upon finishing the book I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the story. Will Feltman does a wonderful job of capturing the reader's attention, while not giving away to many details. To say the ending was surprise is an understatement. The unpredictable ending was a refreshing way to complete the story. I look forward to reading any future work from this author.

It was a really good book, and I read a lot. This biggest surprise is that this is Will's first book and when you consider his age, it is amazing what he was able to produce. I suspect he will be one of my favorite authors if he keeps this up.

Well developed characters and gripping story line By dee The best books I have ever read have been those where the characters draw you in and help you to identify with them. I think this book does that and more. The ending is a shock and not at all what I wanted to see happen to these 2 kids....

Family secrets combine with fantasy in this epic tale of battle, magic, strange creatures, power, and fate—a Game of Thrones for a younger audience.Separated at birth triplets, Tarlan, Elodie, and Gulph, have grown up knowing nothing about each other. However, an ancient prophecy says that the three will one day be reunited, overthrow the king, and bring peace to the land. Each of the triplets has a special power that sets him or her apart from other people. Tarlan can speak to animals. Elodie can hear the voices of ghosts. And Gulph can become invisible. But what use are these abilities if they can’t stay alive long enough to claim the throne? As three new stars shine in the nighttime sky, events are driving them together, but will the triplets live? Let alone rule?

Crown of Three, by J. D. Rinehart

From School Library Journal Gr 6–8—Toronia has been at war for over 1,000 years. Its king is a cruel tyrant, and the people are poor and hungry. Many years ago, a prophecy proclaimed that triplets born to the king would kill him and rule together in his stead, bringing with them a time of peace. For 13 years these triplets have been hidden away, separated from one another and leading very different lives. Tarlan was raised in the frozen tundra of Yalasti with his Thorrods, giant birds who are like family to him, unaware of the prophecy. Gulph was a performer with the Tangletree players until the Queen takes him captive and inadvertently sets the prophecy in motion. Elodie is the only one who is conscious of her princess status. However, she was fooled by her caretaker and unaware of the existence of her brothers. The story is fast-paced, and the world is accessible and absorbing. The characters are well developed, and their motives are believable. The narrative alternates among the perspectives of the three siblings and it all flows together well. There is quite a bit of violence throughout as well as some gory elements. VERDICT A good start to what will probably be a popular fantasy adventure series.—Kristyn Dorfman, The Packer Collegiate Institute, Brooklyn, NY

CHAPTER 1

Gulph stared at the crowd. An ocean of faces surrounded him, some expectant, some bored. There must have been hundreds of spectators—perhaps even a thousand—all dressed in finery the like of which Gulph had never seen. They filled the tiered seats of the Toronian Great Hall. Gulph used to daydream about playing to such a large audience but had never imagined that, when the time came, it would be as a captive of the king. He inhaled, his empty belly gurgling at the tang of roasted pork wafting from trays carried by wandering servants. He listened to the low rumble of the audience as the king’s guests murmured to each other, shifted in their seats, waved their fans against the heat. He watched airborne dust move through rays of light pouring down from the gold-tinted windows in the roof. Was it possible to make glass from gold? Gulph didn’t know. “Get on with it!” called a voice from the uppermost row of seats. Not as if we’ve got any choice, Gulph thought. He bowed low, bending forward at the waist until his nose touched the tip of his left shoe. He waited as a ripple of amusement moved through the crowd. Then he stood up straight again, paused, and bent over backward. This time the crowd gasped. Gulph’s spine folded over on itself. Gripping his ankles with his hands, he stuck his head through his legs and forced himself to grin his biggest grin. With his body contorted in this seemingly impossible fashion, Gulph trotted from one end of the sand-covered floor to the other. On the way he passed Pip, who was juggling a selection of apples and pears and hopping from foot to foot. As Gulph circled her, she dropped him a wink, but there was no mistaking the sadness in her brown eyes. The other members of the Tangletree Players looked on and clapped their hands. The jester, Sidebottom John, went one step further by standing on his hands and jangling the bells attached to his ankles. The crowd took up the applause. By the time Gulph had returned to the center of the hall, many of the audience were on their feet. He planted his hands on the floor and flipped his legs over his head. Landing on his feet, he bowed again, this time to the royal box. King Brutan and Queen Magritt were unmissable in their crimson robes. The king stroked his beard, expressionless. The queen dipped her head, but, instead of a smile on her face, Gulph thought he saw a frown. A cloud cast its shadow overhead and the golden light faded. Suddenly Gulph saw the Great Hall for what it was: a once-grand chamber grown old and tired. Paint was peeling from the thick supporting columns, and the uniforms of the various servants and orderlies were patched and in ill repair. Castle Tor might have been the heart of the kingdom, but the heart was sick. There was a particular face in the royal box Gulph wished he’d never set eyes on: that of General Elrick. This pompous military man with the face of a weasel looked very pleased with his place beside the king and queen, and took every opportunity to chatter to them, seemingly oblivious to their obvious dislike of him. It was Elrick who’d brought the Tangletree Players to Idilliam. Weary from the war, he’d clearly been delighted to discover Gulph and his troupe of wandering entertainers performing for Brutan’s soldiers in the nearby forests of Isur. He’d promised them riches and full bellies, warm quarters, and the king’s protection. The reality had been different. General Elrick had paraded the players before the king as spoils of war, then introduced them to their new home—one freezing cell between all twelve of them. Life on the road—sleeping under hedges wondering where their next meal was coming from, or whether they’d wake to find their throat being cut by some wandering ruffian—had been hard. But as far as Gulph was concerned, at least he had been free. As an encore, Gulph went into a series of backflips. The crowd roared. After every flip, he paused and took another bow, exploiting the extraordinary flexibility of his body to the limit . . . and taking the opportunity to throw another glance at Queen Magritt. Every time he looked at her, her expression grew more ferocious. Stare at me all you like. I’m used to it. Many people saw Gulph’s contortionist skills as a kind of deformity, along with his bulging eyes and the crook in his back. But this was different. So intense was the queen’s glare that, on his final backflip, Gulph stumbled. Ankles tangled, he fell heavily on his backside in a puff of dust. Laughter pealed through the audience. Queen Magritt rose to her feet. Her fists were clenched. On her cheeks, bright red spots stood out like beacons against her pale skin. The king raised his hand to pull her down but she shook him aside. “Take him out of my sight!” she shrieked, pointing directly at Gulph. Instantly the crowd fell silent. Gulph stared at the queen, bewildered, as her words echoed through the Great Hall. “This . . . this malformed monster will bring nothing but ill fortune to the realm.” “But, Your Majesty . . .” said General Elrick, rising to his feet. The king shoved him down, then turned to regard his queen with one bushy eyebrow raised quizzically. “The Vault of Heaven!” said Queen Magritt. Astonished cries rose from the audience. She waved a group of legionnaires forward. “Take him there. Take him there now. I won’t have him in my sight a moment longer!” As the soldiers strode toward him, Gulph looked up at the shocked faces of his friends. “They won’t take you!” called Sidebottom John. “Tangletree stays together,” said Willum, the bright-eyed piper. He ran toward Gulph; after a moment’s hesitation, the other players followed suit. Pip, the juggler, was much closer than the rest. Seizing Gulph’s hand, she hauled him to his feet. “What’s the Vault of Heaven?” said Gulph, dazed. “I don’t know.” Pip’s hold turned into an embrace. “I won’t let them take you, Gulph!” The legionnaires reached Gulph before the rest of his friends. Grabbing Pip, they shoved her aside. As they surrounded Gulph, she beat against their backs. The rest of the Tangletree Players halted, uncertain in the face of such force. “Get back,” said Gulph, anxious for Pip’s safety. “You can’t help me!” “Yes, I can!” Pip replied. She raced across the arena to the royal box. Skidding to a halt, she fell to her knees before the king. “Please, sire, I beg you,” she cried. “Show my friend mercy. He only wants to entertain you. He’s done nothing wrong.” The king leaned forward, smiling. “Such loyalty toward such a grotesque creature.” His grin became a scowl. “Do you know what happens to little girls who question a royal command?” Peering past the heads of his captors, Gulph watched in horror as a legionnaire struck Pip square in the chest with the blunt end of his spear. Pip fell backward onto the sandy floor. “Leave her alone!” shouted Gulph, trying to force his way through the legionnaires. “I don’t care where you take me. Just leave my friends alone!” Hands clamped around Gulph’s arms and shoulders. He struggled in vain as Queen Magritt beckoned to a tall, gray-haired man dressed in the bronze armor of the King’s Legion. “Captain Ossilius,” she said. “Come to me.” The crowd hushed as she murmured to the legionnaire. Giving up the struggle, Gulph waited. He listened to the blood thumping in his ears. When the queen had finished speaking, Captain Ossilius nodded and marched over to Gulph. The soldiers fell back, leaving Gulph standing alone and exposed. “Will you defy me, boy?” said Captain Ossilius. Gulph stared into the man’s eyes. He looked tired and a little sad. Gulph glanced at Pip, who was being helped to her feet by Sidebottom John. A pair of legionnaires loomed over them. “No, sir,” he said. He had no idea why this was happening—or even what had happened. He just knew that to save his friends he had to obey. “Very well,” said Captain Ossilius. Seizing Gulph’s arm, he dragged the young contortionist out of the Great Hall. As they passed the royal box, King Brutan turned his rage on General Elrick. “You fool!” the king bellowed as the general cowered. “How dare you upset my queen? The day is ruined!” His voice was drowned out by the clamor in Gulph’s head. The Vault of Heaven, he thought wildly, wondering what his destination could be. The name was strangely beautiful but did nothing to lessen his fear. Outside the castle, the narrow streets were packed with peasants putting up rickety tables and erecting makeshift stalls. Captain Ossilius hauled Gulph through the labyrinth without saying a word. The captain’s grip on his arm was like iron. I can’t wriggle my way out of this one. As they passed a vegetable stall, a woman behind it threw a cabbage at Gulph. It struck him on the side of the head and slid onto his shoulder in a mass of pulpy, rotten leaves. The stench was overwhelming; so was Gulph’s misery. He tugged at his captor’s arm, wanting to explain to the stallholder that he wasn’t a criminal, that it was all a mistake. Then he saw that all the vegetables on the stall were rotten, not just the one the woman had thrown. He realized the clothes for sale in the adjacent stall had been thrice mended and were ready to fall apart. Even through his despair, Gulph saw that Idilliam was not a happy place. Turning a corner, they left the market and entered an open yard. Here Captain Ossilius stopped. “We are here,” he said. Gulph didn’t understand. He’d been expecting some kind of prison, but all he could see was a forest of tree trunks stripped of their branches. They rose from the cobbled yard like the legs of some enormous beast. “What . . . ?” he began. Then he looked up. The trunks were stilts. Perched on top of them was what looked like a gigantic bird’s nest. It appeared big enough to contain the entire Great Hall, where the Tangletree Players had just been performing. What Gulph had thought were branches were in fact iron bars, bent and woven into an intricate mesh. Between them he saw the occasional flicker of an orange flame. But for the most part, the nest’s interior was utterly black. “Come, boy,” said Captain Ossilius. A narrow set of steps led up through the massive stilts. Suspended from creaking ropes, the steps swayed as they climbed. At the top was a square iron door. Beside it was a row of rusted gibbets—small metal cages each just big enough to hold a man. Captain Ossilius thrust Gulph inside one of the gibbets and snapped the lock shut. Taking a key from his pocket, he opened the door and disappeared inside the iron nest. Gulph stared through the bars he was standing on, to the ground below. It was a very long way down. He looked sideways into the next gibbet and saw a pile of bones. Was this it? Was he to be left here to die of thirst and starvation? And for what? Because the sight of his deformed body offended the queen? Gulph pinched his eyes shut. He would not cry. The door clanged open. Someone fumbled with the gibbet’s lock. Gulph opened his eyes to see Captain Ossilius standing before him. He searched the man’s face for some sign of hope. “Forgive me,” said the captain, and Gulph’s heart lifted. It had all been a mistake after all! But Ossilius said, “I had to restrain you while I made arrangements. Come!” The captain’s hand clamped once more around Gulph’s arm. He was dragged through the door and into darkness. The door slammed shut, and out of the black void ahead came a gravelly voice. “Ah, here you are,” it said. “Welcome to the Vault of Heaven.”

The story is really good, but be warned: the fighting and battles are described in excessively gory detail. It was a bit much even for us parents. We kind of regret subjecting our 7 (almost 8) year old to the audio book version of this on our long car ride. The story was so good we couldn't turn it off. We are looking forward to book 2, though this time we will read it to the kids and skip over the gore.

Good story if you like fiction literature By Amazon Customer Great story,I was a little surprised at how good this story actually was because the description does not explain much. However, I can not wait until the next story. It is about triplets who are separated at birth because their father wants to murder them. However, they survive and each grow up in very different life styles, yet thirteen years after the triplets were separated they have to find each other again in order to stay alive and reclaim their rightful place as rulers. It is a very interesting book full of magic, mythical animals and prophecies. It is like a mixture of the action in the lord of the rings books and the magic of the Gryphon Chonicles.

However, the female characters leave something to be wanted. The male characters are met in cool situations that require intelligence and strength. The female character is met while shopping. I prefer books where the female characters are just as capable as the men.
