Actually, I didn't know what Kombucha and Kefir is, not until when my friend introduced this box set to me. Komucha is a probiotic beverage that is good in detoxifying and healing our body, while Kefir is a fermented beverage or yogurt that contains natural occurring yeast culture. The instructions on how to make Kombucha are well written and easy to follow. Thumbs up for this!

Joelle Charbonneau has reaped widespread critical acclaim and secured her status as a YA writer to watch with her much-loved Skating and Glee Club series. The first in a trilogy that's won immediate raves, The Testing finds 16-year-old Malencia Vale celebrating graduation day. Chosen as a possible leader of her post-war civilization, Cia travels to Tosu City, where romance awaits―along with nightmarish danger.

The Testing (The Testing Trilogy), by Joelle Charbonneau

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up-Like almost every 16-year-old in the United Commonwealth, Cia Vale hopes to be called for the Testing, her ticket out of rural Five Lakes Colony and into the University in Tosu City. Cia's father was selected, but only vaguely remembers the experience in nightmares. Her four older brothers were passed over. Just when she has resigned herself to life as a mechanic or farmer, she gets word that she is one of four students selected from Five Lakes and is expected to board the skimmer to Tosu City the next day, most likely never to return. The bulk of the book is taken up with the Testing-devious exercises to identify those with superior leadership skills as society has suffered through Seven Stages of War and desperately needs to repair the damage to living creatures and the environment. The mental and physical trials will weed out 80 percent of the candidates, leaving several maimed or dead. Cia teams up with Tomas for both practical and romantic reasons. She is independent and smart for the most part, and Tomas seems almost too good to be true. There are double-crosses, mutant life-forms, and booby traps to navigate before 20 hearty souls receive word that they have passed. Cia's story is expected to span a trilogy. The influence of The Hunger Games is obvious, and The Testing will satisfy readers who want similar dystopian adventures.-Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley School, Fort Worth, TXα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist Mystery writer Charbonneau throws her hat into the YA dystopian ring with this series opener that bears more than a slight resemblance to The Hunger Games. Sixteen-year-old newly graduated Cia Vale is selected to take part in The Testing, a process that offers the only chance at a college education and training to become part of the next generation of leaders. Cia has spent years preparing for this—it’s her chance to help the United Commonwealth recover from the devastating Seven Stages War. Cia’s father, who took part in The Testing himself, warns her to trust no one. Charbonneau is treading familiar ground as she sets her young heroine against a government machine that is focused, brutal, and duplicitous. Though the story moves quickly, readers might be confused as to the reasons behind the government’s methods. Why the brutality against students? There is no indication that the citizens are oppressed, and they’re unaware of how gruesome The Testing is. The ending will ensure interest in the next installment, but hopefully book two will deliver some answers. Grades 7-12. --Kara Dean

I even received an eARC from the publisher for review. I was just sooo excited to read this, but for some crazy reason, I didn't. I kept thinking how awesome this series sounds, and how much I love dystopians, but I kept putting it off. So finally, when I received my credits from audible audio, I said what the hell, it's finally time to give THE TESTING it's fair shot. And OMG, I found myself instantly drawn into this story. The narrator was amazing, and the mystery was alluring, and I was easily able to get into the vibes. I couldn't help but to pick this audiobook up every free chance I got. THE PLOT... Cia has always lived a fairly good life, better then most anyway. With a big family, all brothers, and two loving successful parents that any child would appreciate. She's been preparing for the opportunity to be chosen for The Testing. But when the time comes to graduate and become an official adult, Cia's world becomes a living nightmare. Cia's dreams have finally come true, she's officially been chosen for The Testing!! And she can't be more thrilled. She's always hoped for the opportunity to show her government just how much she can contribute in making the Commonwealth a better place for their future. And now after all her hard work, it's finally paid off. Until The Testing actually starts and Cia finally sees The Testing for what it really is, a death trap in waiting! Cia has no choice but to go through with The Testing, or risk treason against the United Commonwealth. And that right there could mean a death sentence in itself. But Cia's not giving up, she's smart, determined, and not easily manipulated. And besides, Cia has one thing that gives her an advantage, and just might keep her alive long enough to get through The Testing. She has her fathers words, his warnings, his own experiences through The Testing. But as The Testing gets deeper, and Cia finds herself getting closer to the finish line, her fathers words ring in her ears "Trust no one." But Cia finds herself drawn to her childhood friend Tomas, and feels for some reason, he can be trusted. But what about the other Testing Candidates? Can they be trusted? Who's real, and who isn't? Who is befriending her to betray her? And who is befriending her to ally with her? As the plot thickens, and The Testing Candidates get further into The Testing, they will have to determine who is deadly, and who is just trying survive. Because before all is said and done, they will come face to face with death, but whether or not they survive is up to them. But Cia may find that there is more cutthroats then not, and if she has any chance of surviving, she will have to do as her father said "Trust no one!" But surly, she can trust Tomas, can't she? THE TESTING was a great addition to the Dystopian genre, that is sure to please many readers. I'm looking forward to finishing this series and seeing what happens next in Cia and Tomas's adventure! Overall, THE TESTING was a fast-paced, action-packed, thrill-ride, that is not to be missed! If you love action, adventure, corrupt governments, rebellions, and overall, a great dystopian novel, then THE TESTING is sure to please!!!NOTE: I received an eARC from Houghton Mifflin Books for reviewing purposes. All opinions expressed are my own and are not influenced in any way!

By Christine I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.I went into this book eager and excited to learn more about this thing called "The Testing." Having Cia's father's last departing words in the summary piqued my interest, big time. Why can't you trust anyone?! What's so dark about being tested to further your education? When I got an ARC from the publisher (Thanks so much HMHKIDS!) I could not wait to dive into this world. I had to hold off for a couple of weeks due to scheduling but once I finally started reading, I couldn't set it down! School and life demanded my attention so unfortunately, I had to stop reading. But the next minute I was free, I was grabbing this book up again. Needless to say, THE TESTING doesn't disappoint!I've seen a couple of reviewers claiming that THE TESTING is like the HUNGER GAMES. I don't necessarily agree with that statement. I'll explain why: In a post-apocalyptic world, after the deadly Seven Stages of World, Earth is left ravaged, broken, and hardly sustainable to life. A group of survivors came together, created the United Commonwealth, and started the revitalization of Earth. Fast forward a hundred years or so later, and enter Cia Vale. She lives in the Five Lakes Colony with her family and University graduate father. Without him, new species of plants would not have been developed and everyone would die. (Basically. I'm kind of stretching it a bit). When Cia is chosen for The Testing after graduation, her father is not very pleased. He's gone through it, before.Cia and the 3 other members of her colony are the first chosen candidates from Five Lakes in years. The competition sees them as no threat. The Testing is a series of tests that not only test the candidates' intellect, but also their character, leadership, ability to work in group, and survive. *cue creepy music* Now, while I can see how some people drew parallels to the HUNGER GAMES, this book has its own flare, spice, and really, its own unique premise. THE TESTING is all about learning who you can and cannot trust, being able to decipher the Testing officials cryptic directions, outsmarting said directions and the other competition, and using the skills and knowledge that has been instilled in you since birth to come out of the Testing alive. This book is a smart book. After reading it and seeing just how brilliant Cia is and her ability to figure out what the Testing officials were actually looking for, I realized I'd probably fail the test. Hard. There are some devious candidates who are willingly to do almost anything to pass the tests. And while the candidates do have to go through a certain test that sees their ability to survive on the ravaged planet, those are the only two ways I would really compare it to The HUNGER GAMES.I absolutely loved Cia. She's not some "I can take on the world without breaking a sweat" character that you see from a lot of dystopians. She is young. She is scared. She makes people think she is brave, even if she isn't exactly feeling that way at the time. She is cautious. She is willingly to make sacrifices if it means doing the right thing. She trusts a little too easily. She is real. I could not have imagined a better character for this story. I loved watching her grow but also seeing the vulnerable side that a real teenager would exhibit if they were thrown into the real world, so fast, with no idea what the next day might bring. I would be terrified to be sent away from home to take part in The Testing. You have no idea what it's going to be like. If my dad told me the things that Cia's father told her the night before she left, I wouldn't go...if you weren't forced to go, that is.Tomas. Tomas. Tomas. I have such a hard time with, you! He seems like the perfect, swoon-worthy gentleman who acts like he's had a secret thing for Cia for quite some time. I loved how he wanted to form an alliance with Cia. But after what Cia's dad said, I never could fully trust him. After all the sweet and encouraging things he did to ease Cia's mind, I still had this little bug in my ear saying "don't get too attached!" I'm not going to tell you whether you should trust him or not. You need to read the book to find out! And really, you probably need to read the second book: INDEPENDENT STUDY to make your mind up.And that brings me to my last point: the ending. I'm a sucker for a good ending. And Ms. Charbonneau, you're killing me with that ending! She ends the novel at such a pivotal point! I have to wait until January '14 to see what happens next?! It's not necessarily a cliff hanger but man, it ended at such a good part. I definitely said, out loud, "NO. You can't just end now!"To sum everything up: I would definitely recommend this book to all dystopian/post-apocalyptic fans! While there may be some aspects that The HUNGER GAMES fans would enjoy, Joelle Charbonneau has created a unique world with a rigorous and daunting Testing regimen that I don't think I would even be able to pass. She uses syntax to her and the Testing officials advantage, challenging readers to see if they are paying as careful attention as is required for the candidates to move on to the next round. With a realistic and admirable main character, THE TESTING is sure to keep your attention until the very last sentence. But be careful of who you decide to trust!

34 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Waste of time By Jane The plot was decent enough, but hard to really buy. If the characters were engaging I could've forgiven the flaws in the plot. One of the main characters even has this to say about the plot: "I mean, why the hell would the Testing officials bring us all here just to kill us? It doesn't make any sense." No, Tomas, it doesn't make sense, and I am asking myself the same thing.Despite my better judgment, I was curious about this book. The plot sounded like "Post-apocalyptic setting with a fight-to-the-death ACTs." I should have listened to the reviews that call this a carbon-copy of The Hunger Games except most people want to be tested after they finish their schooling, as opposed to being Reaped and knowing you'll probably die.Which brings me to my next problem with this book. The whole testing process is really just a college entrance exam. Through inaction, the university essentially encourages the participants to lie, cheat, steal, and even kill. To them, death is a result of being wrong about something and if you died because you accidentally ate a poisonous plant, or another participant murders you, well, you should've been CONSTANTLY VIGILANT and not been killed, so the school wouldn't have wanted you anyway. Just. WHAT IS THAT. WHAT EVEN IS THAT. Beyond that, though, I'm not sure how this impacts the rest of the nation. Maybe not every colony is 100% equal to the others in terms of wealth, but I really do not think of this as a dystopia. The colonies are thriving for the most part. Leadership is encouraging research to improve the world from all the devastation of wars and natural disasters. Certainly there is some really shady things going on in their government (such as the, you know, violent university entrance exam process and punishment by death if you do not go if you're picked, even though it appears most everyone hopes to get picked). There is no indication that beyond the testing process that the leadership and government are oppressing their citizens; they are not (as far as we know at this point in the story when the book ends) taking all the colonies' wealth for themselves and making them live in terror. They genuinely want to improve things, it seems. So it's baffling to me that the testing process is even a thing.I could have overlooked the flawed logic if the characters were at least compelling, but I felt like I was reading void sacks of skin take tests then try to kill each other. Seriously. Not a single character evoked any emotion from me. The romance felt flat and bland and had zero chemistry or passion going for it. I could not care any less about any of the deaths or plot twists or anything. I don't think I've read a book that lacks emotion and feeling more than this one, except maybe "No Safety in Numbers."Go read The Hunger Games instead. Cia and Tomas are definitely no Katniss and Peeta. If there weren't so many similarities between the two series I wouldn't go there, but the main plots of The Testing follow THG almost step-for-step, and maybe here imitation is not the most sincere form of flattery.

What if the world shrugged before Atlas did? Paul Hendrickson - a married middle-American father of three and IT project manager - would rather watch paint dry than worry about politics. And like most Americans, for Hendrickson, "freedom" was something he'd taken for granted; "liberty and justice for all", a slogan he repeated every morning in elementary school. But earth-shattering events in the near future cause him, his family, and the entire world around him to confront the questions "what is freedom?", and "what is civilization?" Join Paul Hendrickson, his family, and a cast of thousands as they explore a world without limits, a world without authority... ...a world just like ours, only upside down.

Can a Minnesota blogger add to the age-old Poli Sci debate: is humanity basically good but corrupted by government, or basically wicked and only preserved by government? Ya, sure, ya betcha he can! This after-the-collapse story uses wacky plot twists and wildly improbable characters to illuminate profound thoughts about how much government we should have and what it should do -- and should Not do (sharp-eyed readers will find justification for all their favorite Constitutional Amendments). The silliness makes the profundity easier to see, a classic use of reductio ad absurdum. Berg also has a great ear for people speaking jargon: childless woman harassing a charter school teacher about licenses, libertarians spouting slogans when asked who will build the roads because they have no answer, and I particularly loved the sportscaster sagely reminding viewers that most often, the team that puts the most points on the board, wins! Funnier than “Eat The Rich,” lighter than “Leviathan,” more sensible than all Paul-bots together, Trulbert! is a book every American should read.

Wells Collecting: Axis: Revolutions #1-4This slim companion volume to Avengers & X-Men: Axis should've been collected with main event omnibus. had it been collected, these stories would have filled out the events of Axis with a bit of a wider scope. Even with the larger Axis volume at hand, Revolutions just doesn't offer much new material that justifies it as an additional purchase. If you're a Marvel complete-ist or a if you really enjoyed the Axis event, then this book may be a good fit for you.The book collects a series of vignettes that show various heroes and villains in the midst of the Axis inversion spell. Spider-Man has to attempt crowd control in a world gone mad. An epic battle occurs between Nightcrawler and newly moral Sabretooth. Thor goes on an epic bender. Shadowcat robs banks, Iceman reinvents himself as a dark-knight style "hero." Finally Doom begins democratic reforms in Latveria.I liked the stories, I just think they would've been better in a larger collection where the stories could add flavor to the main event. As it stands, this book is seasoning without a meal.

A luminous YA love story that evokes Judy Blume's Forever for a new generation.

Sarah—Bean to her friends and family—is an aspiring astronomer and champion mathlete. She lives behind her beloved telescope, with her head in the stars and her feet planted firmly on the ground. For as long as she can remember, she's also lived in the shadow of her beautiful older sister, Scarlett.

But after a traumatic end to the school year, Sarah goes to Cape Cod for the summer with her family, determined to grow up. It's there that she meets gorgeous, older college boy Andrew. He sees her as the girl she wants to be. A girl like Scarlett. He thinks she's older, too—and she doesn't correct him.

For Sarah, it's a summer of firsts. Before she knows what's happened, one little lie has transformed into something real. And by the end of August, she might have to choose between falling in love, and finding herself.

Fans of Jenny Han and Stephanie Perkins are destined to fall for this romantic and heartfelt coming-of-age novel about how life and love are impossible to predict.

Between Us and the Moon, by Rebecca Maizel

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Sarah has always been fine with living in the shadow of her sister, Scarlett, who has a larger-than-life persona. Between tracking the Comet Jolie and her boyfriend, Tucker, Sarah hardly notices that it is not exactly normal to be over-obsessed with science and to make handy lists for everything in one's life. She didn't even realize that Tucker has been spending less time with her. When he breaks up with her for one of the most popular girls in school, life seems unbearable. Sarah welcomes the opportunity to go with her family to Cape Cod and spend the summer with her Aunt Nancy. Here, she is determined to finally grow up, be more like her sisiter, and make her own choices. At the beach, while Sarah is channeling her "inner Scarlett," she meets Andrew, a gorgeous college boy. Soon, one little lie grows into a cacophony of problems. By the end of the summer, the protagonist is teetering between finding herself and falling in love. Maizel's writing is clear and concise, and has enough witty humor to keep pages turning. Readers will relate to Sarah and how her bad decisions lead to consequences that keep piling up around her. VERDICT With its themes of confidence and discovering one's true self, this summer romance is a great choice for teens.—Brittney Kosev, Dave Blair Elementary School, Farmers Branch, TX

Review “The romance between Sarah and Andrew is what first love is meant to be. A fine summer fling for a satisfying summer read.” (Kirkus Reviews)“With its themes of confidence and discovering one’s true self, this summer romance is a great choice for teens.” (School Library Journal)

From the Back Cover

It's easy to watch the world from afar. But to fall in love you have to live in it.

Ever since Sarah was born, she's lived in the shadow of her beautiful older sister, Scarlett. A budding astronomer, Sarah's days are devoted to math club and the boy she's loved since kindergarten, Tucker. Her nights are spent observing the vast universe through her Stargazer 5020.

Then Tucker breaks Sarah's heart, and she goes to Cape Cod for the summer with her family, ready for something big in her life to change. She doesn't want to live in the shadows anymore. She wants to be someone who shines. Someone like Scarlett.

She doesn't expect to meet Andrew. Gorgeous, college boy Andrew. Andrew pulls Sarah out from behind her telescope. He sees the girl she wants to be.

For Sarah, it's a summer of firsts. A summer of blazing comets and shooting stars. Before she knows what's happened, one little lie has transformed into something real. And by the end of August, she might have to choose between falling in love and finding herself.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The perfect summer read! By Breanna & Lacey When I read this book in January, it was probably one of the hardest books I've ever had to write a review for. I can't recall the last time I felt so jerked around by a book, or the last time I was so genuinely conflicted about my feelings toward a book. How I felt was actually kind of ironic, because this book was actually sort of centered around conflict and being jerked around.Bean (or Sarah, as her birth certificate says) is silly and star-brained. She's literally obsessed with astronomy and her telescope, and she has been all her life. She has a best friend who loves it just as much, and they spend a lot of their time together looking up at the stars. The best part is that recently, he stopped being just her friend and became her boyfriend and as far as she's concerned, things are perfect. They hold hands, look at the stars, kiss, talk about the future, he knows her better than anyone else. It's great. For like, a few pages, at least, until he's acting all weird and says he needs to tell her something and I just knew it was about to blow up in her face but she had no idea.Of course, they're teenagers! Her boyfriend isn't wrong for wanting to break up with Bean. If anything, she's kind of part of the problem. She's too wrapped up in her comet observation to realize what's happening until it's way, way too late. The break up devastates her, though. And it infuriates her. She loses her boyfriend and her best friend in one fell swoop. There's more than just that going on in Bean's life, though. She also has a sister named Scarlett who's beautiful and graceful. She's got blonde hair, a nice body, and she's an absolutely phenomenal ballet dancer. She casts a hell of a shadow, and Bean feels like she's always trapped in it.The rift between the sisters was obvious to me almost immediately, but so was something else: Scarlett loves her little sister. She really, truly loves her so much that she pretends to be interested in the things that she likes, asks her questions about her hobbies, tells her the lame stuff she does is cool, and always puts forth effort to do things for her and spend time with her, even if some of them are tiny things that Bean doesn't notice. Unlike most older, spotlight-hogging sisters, I loved Scarlett and how much she adored Bean.Bean, however, does not see that Scarlett loves her. She's an awkward, socially inept, self-centered girl whose favorite thing to do is make assumptions. She assumes people think or feel things without asking them or giving them a chance to show themselves to her. She writes everyone off because she assumes they don't want to spend time with her and essentially lives in a self-made prison of isolation and loneliness. The weird thing, though? In spite of those things and the stupid stuff she spends this book doing, I really liked her.On top of her break up, it's time for the annual family trip to Cape Cod to stay with her rich, widowed Aunt Nancy. While her sister is out and about living her life, Bean is stuck inside without any opportunity to have one because, just like herself, her family assumes that she's going to stay the same and never wants to do anything new. The isolation, the weight of her breakup, and her bitterness toward her sister becomes too much, especially when she receives some infuriating news from home.In the spirit of true high school movies and the inspiration of being such a nerd, she decides to fix it the best way she knows how: science. Social science, to be exact. She steals her sisters clothes and little pieces of her personality to begin her "experiment", and parades around Cape Cod like one of the pretty, smart, interesting girls she wants so badly to be, in order to impress boys. Or maybe make friends. Or maybe even change her life? Or just to be noticed by her family. (The last one. It's the last one.)Her journey throughout this book is actually incredibly realistic, to the point that it literally makes me angry to even think back on it. I loved her most of the time, but sometimes I wanted to grab her by the shoulders and shake her like, "WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!" in an affectionate, big sister kind of way. I wanted to hug her and teach her about the world - but only after I shook her. Seriously, at least 1/3 of this book was spent wanting to shake her.Bean's deception doesn't stop at clothes and personality. She lies a lot. Especially to a particular boy she meets on her trip, Andrew. He's honestly such an ideal human being. He's sweet but genuine, funny, flawed, damaged, realistic. He was a dynamic, amazing character to read about and I adored everything about him. Honestly.I didn't support the couple, knowing what I knew, but I loved their interactions. Everything about this seemed effortless and natural, and he really got her, as much as he could.I loved the ending of this book. I won't go into details but it was absolutely perfect. It was unexpected but beautiful. There were no disgusting cliches, ignoring problems, no pretty pink ribbons tied around s***** things and calling them great.Between Us and the Moon was real, vibrant, and absolutely beautiful. I loved it.

[Bean] finds the confidence to showcase her nerdy side in BETWEEN US AND THE MOON By Teen Reads Sarah --- Bean to her friends and family --- is an aspiring astronomer and champion mathlete. Before she knows what's happened, one little lie has transformed into something real. And by the end of August, she might have to choose between falling in love and finding herself. The best part about a book is the personal connection one can build with the characters. We are immediately drawn to the character that exhibits similar characteristics to us only to realize later that the character displays characteristics we didn’t even realize we had. For me, that was the case with Bean in BETWEEN US AND THE MOON. Bean was a typical 16-year-old girl with her head in the clouds who suddenly crashed back down to earth over a summer. Although I haven’t crashed back down to earth yet (I like to think of it as a slow descent), Bean’s awkwardness and underlying hilarity resonated with me. However, throughout the book, Bean grows in ways we don’t expect her to when we first meet her. She finds parts of herself she didn’t know existed, something that I have begun to do as well. She finds the confidence to showcase her nerdy side as well as her confident and fierce side, which has inspired me to do the same. While books are often popular because they bring a sense of realism, they’re also appreciated because they bring about a sense of fantasy and mystique. Things happen in books that would never happen in real life. When was the last time you attended a school in Paris and found the love of your life? Or when was the last time you commanded a spaceship as a pre-teen? They provide a way to escape the mundane world for a little bit and experience things we would never be able to otherwise. The main reason I like BETWEEN US AND THE MOON is because of the way it balances realistic and fantastical aspects. There was a dose of reality in the way Bean’s character develops and it was very revealing to me, personally. However, the relationships Bean formed with others gives the book a whimsical twist, which I really enjoyed. Bean and Andrew’s relationship is something that could never happen in real life (a relationship with a boy will certainly not happen in my life), but it is fun to fantasize and imagine that it will happen. I like how this book made me forget about the world I live in and transported me to a magical land.SPOILER SECTIONI imagine a lot of people will have mixed feelings about how Bean lied about her age. Personally, I feel like she should have definitely put more thought into what she was doing. Andrew could have very well lost his job --- and jeopardized his entire career --- because of Bean. However, all characters have flaws, and Bean eventually realizes her mistake, which is the second best thing she could have done (aside from telling the truth in the beginning). The end. Oh my goodness. That was the most frustrating ending I have ever read. The whole time, we’re waiting for Bean to tell Andrew that she’s actually 16, not 18, and when she does, he runs away. RUNS. AWAY. That’s it! They have no interaction after that and we never get to see Andrew’s reaction after his initial shock (and what seemed to be disgust). And the eye contact they make a year later doesn’t count because that went nowhere, too. I may have thrown the book a few times in my frustration. But we’ve all done that, right?Reviewed by Pranshu A.

By Rhea @ Rhea's Neon Journal If I were to pitch Between Us and The Moon is one sentence it would be something like this: A summer romance filled with lies and stars.Sarah “Bean” Levin, scientist and stargazer, is sick of being in the shadow of her older sister Scarlett. After she’s dumped by her long time best friend turned boyfriend Tucker, she decides that she’s going to start working on The Scarlett Experiment—an attempt to observe how exactly her sister has all the boys wrapped around her finger. Sarah changes her clothes, her attitude, her speech and finds herself Andrew, the sweetest boy in Cape Cod, and finds the romance she wants.Except there’s one important thing she changes—her age.I didn’t agree with Sarah’s plan of lying to Andrew about her age. The constant lies and deception, and the absurd lengths she went to in order to keep the truth from coming out were off-putting and while I cheered for her and thought that she was one of the most real characters I’ve read all summer, I knew right away that she had a lot of growing up to do. She was enthusiastic about stars and the periodic table of elements and all things science, but I agreed that she had kind of set aside people and experiences and adventures and preferred to lock herself up all day to study or research. She was a follower, also, but we can’t possibly expect every person to be a natural born leader. What was more important to me, was that Sarah learnt from her mistakes and became a better person from them. Sarah was kind and trusting and of course, her summer love with Andrew was what I loved so, so much because I want me one of those Between Us and the Moon, by Rebecca Maizel

By Luv2Read I love YA books. Why do they think that "grown-ups" don't like fun to read secret agent fun??? I actually found this author through his free books. Now, I am reading his entire library and NONE of his books disappoint. One thing I really like about this book is how all the chapters start with a True of False question. These questions made great little talking points for me and my daughter (who also LOVED the book). An example:"True or False? You don't care WHO gets the credit, as long as the job gets done." OR "True or False? You believe impossible is only a little bit harder than possible."It is great to have a book that I enjoy and my kid enjoys too. The book also has a strong female character, which I always like. I feel like reading this book with my daughter sprouted some great organic conversations about choice and freedom and our obligation to others. Of course, it isn't all serious. I just appreciated the opportunity to use the book to talk about more weighty topics with my daughter. The book is actually pretty doggone funny: "Do rebels even get paid?""...they would wake up in heaven or hell or wherever people who kidnap children end up." . I am paraphrasing this part, but this actually made me LOL, "She wasn't even an M&M short of being pure eye candy."

The characters are complex and well developed, the plot moves along at a brisk but not too fast pace, and the storyline takes the reader on a unique journey into the mind of an assassin. The underlying philosophical theme of a young boy being taken and trained to kill set me to thinking how the same thing happens in our society though of course not in those same circumstances.Mr. Bolton writes the dialogue so it is crisp and believable and his descriptions of both characters and scenery put me right into middle of the story. I could almost imagine myself sitting inside a movie theater with popcorn and soda and watching Missions of a Middle School Assassin unfold right up there on the big screen. And who knows? Maybe one day I will be! Looking forward to reading more of Mr. Bolton's work, and soon!

You just have to read it for yourself to feel the excitement and watch as the characters spring right out at you. Denniger characters are larger than life and so real. That puts the book on a different level of its own. I mean, I have read numerous secrete agent stories but non compares to this for sure. The scenes in the book are carefully constructed in detail so you feel the danger and excitement yourself as you read the book.Am I glad I discovered Denniger Bolton? Now am hooked and going to read every book he has ever written for sure. This particular book, I just couldn’t put it down till I finished. That’s to show you just how exciting the book is

I found myself absolutely unable to put it down. This story is a classic twist on the modern romance. It doesn't shy away from real life, but remains raw with a classic Disney feel. I would recommend this book for anyone with a taste for adventure, a love for passion, and a thing for endings that resonate contentment!

Set against the backdrop of the Jamnagar Helicopter crash on 30 August 2012, where two helicopters of the Indian Air Force had a mid-air collision, this story is a reality fiction, loosely based on the true story of an Air Warrior from the Indian Air Force. Narrated through the silent echo of the sorrowful heart of one the shattered families, their pain is best expressed as silent streams of tears flowing noiselessly down a pair of eyes that have intensely loved and sadly lost. Sometimes, when the heart weeps, there is only language that it understands…..Silence.

By Kimberly Smith When reading Silence Under the Blue Sky, by Rajalakshmi Prithviraj, the reader is being invited into a very personal and very real part of the authors life. Regardless of ones background or knowledge of the topics and settings discussed, this story will touch your heart as well as provide a glimpse into a world many have no knowledge of.Written from a third party perspective, we follow the story of a strong and respected woman undergoing a great loss. The heart of the tale is surrounded with an air of hope as the narrator and her counterpart appear to be in the early stages of courtship. Our interest is sparked as the young couple begin their interactions, then when one begins recalling the story of "Apoorva" dealing with her husbands passing, we jump between the present day couple's discussion and Apoorva's personal reflection on the events unfolding around her. In addition, a series of Apoorva's dreams frame the story, personalising the reflection further.Apoorva is depicted as a strong, dependable and respected woman of the Indian Air Force. Her personal heartache is publicly scrutinized by both well-wishers and insensitive individuals. The kind and well-meaning supporting characters surround the pregnant Squadron Leader with heartfelt support. Other onlookers pass judgement on how she should be handling her husbands passing, surely out of their own grief, though some actions are inexcusable. Despite having no privacy from the preferred and the negative, Apoorva handles herself with grace and dignity. The reader does not need to have any background knowledge of the Indian Air Force or ones duties of a Squadron Leader. Her position is described with enough detail to not overwhelm with information but to ensure a secure picture of the environment of her workplace. Personally I was pleasantly surprised of the sense of equality and adoration female and male officers had for the protagonist, being unaware of any details of how the Indian Air Force functions. The peak into the window of this world was a pleasant bonus of following the story itself.Despite this novel being about a sad personal story, upon conclusion their is an immense sense of hope, possibility and the reminder of overcoming the tragic allows you support the future. When loved ones are lost, they are lived on by their families. Their positive and revered actions immortalise the memories of those lost.

Very Moving Story By Page LaRue Silence is a novel based on reality, about an expecting mother in the Indian Air Force who loses her husband (also in the Indian Air Force) in a tragic helicopter collision. Names and circumstances were changed to protect the privacy of the people involved. The story unfolds, told back and forth through the eyes of the mother, Apoorva, back then, and the eyes of her elder, now-grown daughter, Ananya, twenty years later, who also joins the Indian Air Force and insists on flying a helicopter like her father had. Apoorva communicates with her husband in her dreams. Ananya looks back and tells her mother’s story to her male friend and Air Force peer, Animesh. Animesh has heard of Apoorva from her esteemed place in the Indian Air Force. We see how an unexpected death brings out both the best and the worst in people, especially with the sexism rampant in India at the time. But the Indian Air Force always treated her as a Veer Nari (brave woman).Animesh’s father was also in the Indian Air Force, so Animesh had heard of the tragedy way back when, as nine men lost their lives in the crash. The story ties up nicely in the end, when Animesh realizes that the one telling him the story of Apoorva and her husband is their daughter. This is a very moving story, with a few hard truths that apply to us all.

By Diamante Lavendar This book was based on a very touching story about a woman who lost her husband while she was pregnant. The dream entries were quite poignant but I had a bit of trouble with the rest of the manuscript as it was written in a very formal manner. This book was interesting as it came from the perspective of an Indian woman. It speaks of the Indian culture and the expectations towards women as well as the subculture of the Indian Air Force. At times I was confused as to some of the lingo because it was written from that perspective. However, the book speaks in a humanistic way as well when it describes the tragedy and pain of losing someone close to one’s heart.Overall, I would recommend this story because it gives unique insight into India’s cultural expectations towards women. It also speaks of the tragedy of love lost and dreams coming to an end-something everyone can relate to. If you enjoy studying other cultures or can relate to the pain of loss, this story is for you.-Diamante Lavendar, author of Breaking The Silence and The Secrets Of Yashire
