From Cam Jansen (1st grade) to Tuesday Next (present day), I have always enjoyed a good whodunnit. Animalia Whispers: The Heirloom Mysteries, Book 1, fits somewhere between those two series age-wise, and for a young reader, it would certainly make for a quick, enjoyable read.In this first book in the series, young Tia Myers peruses a book on animal communication just before she sets off for summer camp with her two best friends. The book, written by her grandfather, outlines the basics of "talking" to animals, using various sounds and elements of body language. Once at camp, various possessions belonging to the campers start to go missing, and Tia and her friends play the role of amateur sleuths, determined to recover their lost items and locate the thief. As expected, Tia uses her newfound animal linguistic skills to help her track down the bad guys.Animalia Whispers was a quick read. The main character was likeable, and the mystery resolved itself satisfactorily. I would have enjoyed a bit more character development, but as this is the first book in a series, perhaps that will unfold over time. The book held my attention throughout, and the inclusion of animal communication distinguished this book from others of the genre. Given the prevalence of stories in the fantasy genre at the present moment, I was glad that this book stayed firmly rooted in reality, framing animal communication as something not requiring supernatural abilities.
