In the mountains of northeastern New Mexico, Connor Yung has saved the life of Kit, an alien Kite with triangular antigravity wings, whose super genius mind can open gates between the parallel worlds of the multiverse. Kit introduces Connor to her clan, and soon every Kite wants a pet human. But like any genius child with a new toy, they quickly become bored and pawn their new toy off on anothersentient species, that humans dub Mustangs. Connor and his friend Brielle Duart befriend a pair of Mustangs and begin exploring the multiverse as a slow invasion of voracious floatkind species finds all of the gates the Kites keep opening all over Earth. Several Kite clans, jealous of the new partnership of Mustangs and Human dirtbags, initiate the Test of Life, a social practice where Kites and Mustangs test another clan’s right to live by stampeding swarms of the most voracious predatory species of monster on the target’s home nest. Just when humanity finds a means to fly up to five hundred feet above the surface and explore the thousands of parallel worlds in the floatkind multiverse, they are threatened with extinction by the ultimate invasive species.

(OK, that's not a term I normally use, but it's the opening of Mustang Riders, a Sci-Fi novel by Rick A. Mullins. It's spoken by the protagonist, Connor Yung as he begins an exploration of a parcel of land in New Mexico that came into his possession via a rich uncle's generosity. The 'normalness' of the backpacker's trek is soon tossed on its ear as alien creatures burst through a hole in the sky just above the valley Connor is exploring.Because of the cover, I pictured the lead creatures as dragon-like, and they were being chased by predators that Connor describes as a cross between a Shark and a Snake (so Snark is a logical name, right?). He also calls the first creatures Kites, and befriends one that crash lands due to Snark attack injuries. As he cares for the Kite (who he names Kit), he talks to it in a soothing voice. Before long, the Kite begins to answer. Turns out the beast is sentient. Not only sentient but multiple levels above human intelligence. The Kite, however, has also become a harbinger of doom. The hole it came through was created by the Kite and is actually a tear in the space-time continuum. Kit is from another world... but not from outer space. Another Earth-world. The remainder of the book is a continuous romp of multi-verse exploration, and defense of our planet as a plethora of strange creatures (floatkind) come through the Kite-rips.Mullins has created an in-depth range of alien species (of various levels of intelligence) that all share one trait that Earthings don't have--the ability to fly using anti-gravity wings. I know... it's complicated, but read the book and you'll figure it out.
