From the Inside Flap Megan has an obvious heart to share what she's learned with others on a similar journey to her own. Born and raised in southern California, with cooking influences ranging from Mexican, French, Japanese and Jewish, her flair for the gourmet took a turn in its course when she was diagnosed with her first of three autoimmune diseases in her early 20's. With two in remission, and she and her family in the final legs of their healing journey, Megan is content and basking in the glory of the beautiful foods her healing diet affords. Whole foods, purchased in season, prepared for easy digestion, can be as feast-worthy and more satisfying, than what the Standard American Diet affords. Megan also owns three Weston A. Price/Paleo cafes, teaches cooking classes, and serves as a Recipe Consultant, helping patients referred to her by doctors, adapt to healing diets with flourish! She lives in Eugene, OR with her cozy, mustached husband and three book-loving, adventure-seeking, food-gobbling-up kids.
From the Back Cover EAT BEAUTIFUL is as much a story in photographs, text and recipes as it is a cookbook. The theme is that healing foods have the potential to become a feast. The ultimate lover of food, raised as a gourmet, Megan struggled with declining health after the birth of her third child and decided to heal her family through diet. What she then discovered in the kitchen! From a new grain-free baking technique to quick and easy family treats, Megan understands what it is to enjoy beautiful food and how to make classics, as well as new unusual treats, from grain-free, sugar-free ingredients. This compilation of recipes also bestows a blessing: that you may enjoy your healing journey.

The author - Megan Stevens - is not a nutritionist but she understands the connection between health and nutrition and how the body heals and corrects itself when the proper food is introduced. There are so many ailments that can be fueled by eating the wrong foods: diabetes, celiac, asthma, and the list goes on. Sugar is a demon that will do no end of harm to a body as is white, gluttonous flour. This cookbook features some lovely breakfast items and mostly, desserts, that have been reconfigured with whole, natural and sprouted foods - nothing processed. This is a tricky endeavor but she seems to pay attention to the authenticity of the finished product as far as texture and sweetness go. She uses a lot of stevia in these recipes, which I'm not a fan of (aftertaste) and some of the recipes seem slightly above my baking skill (not gifted in the kitchen arts) but it is still very informative and helpful in inspiring change through simple understanding of what foods do what inside the body and how to have fun with and enjoy certain foods despite whatever it is that is causing a malfunction. I absolutely believe that food is the most natural medicine there is.This is a five star cookbook, no question, but I removed one star for a peripheral but rather big reason. These recipes, while amazing, are costly since most specialty/organic ingredients are way more expensive, especially if you live in NYC. Coconut flour is between $10 and $15 a bag (even on Amazon), cashews are $11 a tub (less than 2 cups), raw local honey $10 a jar (on the low end) and all of the other ingredients I needed to get to make the Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bars would have been nearly $50 at the Food Emporium. Yes, you need good quality, non-GMO ingredients but these are not in the budget for the average working person in a still shaky economy. It's not like these items are things you just happen to have on the shelf if you're not a natural foods chef. Even harder for families feeding hungry children unless it's a family with lots of disposable income. If you can afford to purchase the high quality ingredients these recipes require, you will want this book in your arsenal.Absolutely beautiful.

Saunders Focusing on desserts, the beautifully-photographed and inspring new cookbook, Eat Beautiful: Grain-Free, Sugar-Free, and Loving It by chef and activist Megan Stevens makes trading in unhealthy processed ingredients for natural and nutritious ingredients that uplift and nourish your body, simple and straight-forward ... and, for a variety of diets and food allergies, for people with all levels of baking experience. No matter what types of food allergies you have, this book can help you find the right ingredients to substitute, making sure the finished result tastes great and maintains its nourishing value! With careful attention to flavor, texture, and ingredients, Megan bekons a return to ways people once prepared foods which have supported health for thousands and thousands of years. This cookbook was born out of the author's personal experience; discovering ways to heal her family's health issues with food made at home. Facing these hardships took her family through trial and error and dietary deprivations. But ultimately created trusted and beloved recipes that afforded satisfaction, and well-being.What if I'm on a healing protocol such as GAPS, AIP, or other? If you are following a healing protocol such as GAPS or AIP to restore gut health, if you follow a WAPF or Paleo-inspired diet, or are simply looking for healthful alternatives to prepare your favorite desserts, treats, and meals with nourishing ingredients, I think you'll find this cookbook an essential tool for your kitchen! This is especially true if you have a child following a healing protocol. What if I'm allergic to eggs?Megan has you covered! Included in this book are various recipes that keep the egg-challenged individual in mind. It's refreshing to see thoughtful, well-crafted recipes to nourish which also provide critical nutrients to satiate the body. Feelings of unsatisfied hunger, which frequently accompany disease and malnutrition, can lead to making less-than-optimal choices to fill that need, often with junk and nutrient-deficient "foods". Megan's new book provides healthful alternatives to many of your favorites, without compromising on quality, taste, or nutrition.Don't grain-free recipes compromise texture and flavor?Megan discusses how many modern real food recipes include commercial almond flour and coconut flour which can be lacking in nutrients, and why there are nutritious, safer choices for when you need grain and nut-free options, while still imparting the flavor and texture true to traditional baking recipes.Aren't grain-free recipes more complicated? The grain-free baked goods you'll find in this cookbook can be easier to prepare than those outlined in many modern baking recipes. You'll learn a new grain-free baking technique that will allow you to prepare easier-to-digest recipes. Can I still have my old favorites and comfort foods ... only healthy?Looking for a traditional pumpkin pie or blueberry muffin recipe, but healthy, and still delicious? You'll find these plus 3 different ways to make icing, 4 chocolate chip cookie recipes, and options for unrefined sweeteners to meet everyone's dietary needs and considerations. You'll find some of your most treasured comfort foods including savory meat and vegetable pies, sweet or savory waffles, chocolate cake, ice cream with dairy-free options, cookies, scones, pies and more.I think you will be grateful for this lovingly prepared cookbook by Megan Stevens, with basic and simple recipes which offer alternatives to guide you to success on your healing journey. One of my favorite things about this book is the emphasis on whole foods grown naturally and in season, with simple preparation and wholesome ingredients.

By Wardee Harmon I've been waiting so long for a cookbook of gut-healing foods to recommend to others. Not only are the recipes in Megan's cookbook healthy, they're truly beautiful and delicious. Plus, they're proven delicious and healing winners - her own family has been nourished and healed over the years she's been perfecting the techniques, textures, and flavors in these recipes. People will especially love the new grain-free baking technique that yields moist and delicious, and more digestible, grain-free breads such as the panini sandwich loaves. Here's to beautiful eating, inside and out!
