Hernandez What Happens in London starts off a little like The Nanny Diaries before taking an unexpected turn. Sarah is in London working as a nanny for a sort-of-single mom of two. She bullies Sarah into working on her day off, only to fire her for teaching expletives to her daughter. Armed with a generous severance package and a ticket back to the States, Sarah decides to see a little of London before going home with her tail between her legs. She soon meets Carson, a charming bookstore clerk with a wicked accent and eyes for Sarah. Sarah was raised by an emotionally abusive father and a spineless mother, and her self esteem needs work, but Carson is just what the doctor ordered. Sarah's inability to believe anyone could be interested in her for herself makes it difficult for her to trust Carson.PlotFor just the first book in a tetralogy, What Happens in London has a beginning, a middle, and an end, plus a character arc and a complete story arc. Author Jen McConnel has done what so few authors have, broken a story into smaller parts while still telling a complete story within a story.CharactersThe characters are limited. This is Sarah's story and she's well-developed. I have less of a sense of Carson, but so does Sarah, so that's not a problem. In fact, I believe it was deliberate on the part of the author. I love Sarah. She's hopeful, but jaded, adventurous, yet guarded. She's so conflicted about everything, including herself, and yet she's consistent in her seesawing inconsistencies.World BuildingI haven't been to London in a long time, but I loved seeing the city again through Sarah's eyes. I traveled for business, staying in an American hotel, being provided with a Radio Taxis London charge card, so it was a blast to see the other side of London, the one with youth hostels and the "tube".WritingThe story is told in first person, drawing me into the story. The descriptive details, incorporating smells and sounds as well as sights, brought the scenes to life in very vivid fashion.EndingI liked the ending, but I can see where some people wouldn't. I felt like the author remained true to her character, and wrapped up Sarah's story in a completely believable way while leaving the door wide open for more.Top Five Things I enjoyed about What Happens in London:1. Sarah's relationship with the kids she cares for. Even when they puke on her, she clearly loves them.2. Carson. He's sweet, and I love that he can see the Sarah beyond her insecurities.3. London. One of my favorite cities in the world is beautifully portrayed.4. Hostels. I have to admit, the only hostel I've seen is one in Ocean Beach near where I used to live, but they sound like an awesome way to travel.5. Amsterdam. Known best for it's red light district, I love that the story doesn't set foot there, and instead shows the rest of this amazing city.Bottom LineWhat Happens in London is a quick read that packs a lot of emotional power into its less than 100 pages.DisclaimerI was provided with a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I live in Europe and I though it would be fun to read about girls travelling through cities and falling in love. It sounded like some fun and cute read. Sadly I don't think this was a book for me. I did like the setting and seeing a bit of London through Sarah her eyes. I remember my own visit to London and I liked the travel aspect. Unfortunately that's where my liking for this book ended. The book starts with Sarah working as an au pair and getting fired and then she decides to explore London. The start was pretty good, then she met Carson and things went downhill for me. No matter how hard I tried I did not like Carson and I didn't feel their chemistry or romance or anything. Sarah met some girls and went out one evening and saw Caron a bit more. I was right there with Joelle cautioning Sarah, but ofcourse she didn't listen. I kinda liked Joelle, she seemed nice.I didn't really Sarah, it's not that I disliked her either, I just mostly felt sorry for her and that's it. I also thought it was a bit weird how she was going to explore London, but never really planned things out or thought of the best ways to spend her money and get the most out of her trip, but maybe that's just my inner planner being scared at the prospect of running around like that.I got so angry every time her father got mentioned and how he called Sarah fat. I know things like that happen and it makes me pretty angry in general when others call people names because of their weight, but damn he was her father, he should support her not tear her down. Sarah has some issues with her body image, worries about eating and food and has some self esteem issues because of that, which I could understand. I just mostly felt sorry for her. And then Carson comes around and makes her feel special, so I understood the appeal. But I just didn't like Carson, at all. He gave me the creeps. He lied, acted strange and then was weird with his money (also who has dinner for 300 euro!) and I just didn't like him and he weirded me out. Then there is the whole 'I want to draw you' thing, whcih felt creepy instead of romantic. And he was trying to be romantic and nice, but it rubbed me wrong and I just wanted to scream at Sarah to run the other way.And then it ends, without any resolution or conclusion and it was just weird how things ended between Sarah and Carlson. And then there was an e-mail and I couldn't figure out who wrote it or to whom, until the bottom of the e-mail which had a name. I am assuming the last book that will wrap things up, might make more sense of it, but I am not sure whether I want to continue the series. The whole book feels sorta rushed, I kinda wished the author had make it a full length novel as things just seems to go too fast or lack depth. We never learn much about the characters, beside the obvious things. And Sarah has these mental scars due to her dad calling her fat and worse, but beside that we know little of her and her past. The romance developed really fast and it didn't really feel like a fling, but not like a real relationship either. To conclude: I really liked the concept of this series and the exploring Europe plot. I didn't however connect to Sarah. I felt sorry for her and angry at her father. Carson gave me the creeps in a bad way, I didn't like him at all. And I didn't feel the romance, it felt wrong to me and icky and not romantic at all. Some places felt rushed and I just wish there was more time to get to know the characters and learn about them and more time to explore the city and get a feel for it. Just more. The ending felt kinda abrupt, but I am thinking the last book probably ties some things together. This just wasn't the book for me and I am really sad as I really wanted to like this book.

Book #1 What Happens in London is Sarah's story. It starts off with her in London, doing a Nannying job for two little ones Gracie and Ben , that is until the mum starts to manipulate her and Sarah finds herself sick and out of work and even worse, out of a place to stay. This brings Sarah to the hostel where she meets Joelle - Joelle was the one from What Happens in Berlin and What Happens Abroad, the two become fast friends. Also in London, we note that Sarah is a bit of a bookworm and finds herself wandering around London and ending in a bookstore where she meets Carson - one of the workers. The pair meet and sparks fly and soon the two of them despite Sarah's reservations at first become a couple. Things are going well for Sarah and for her birthday Carson treats her to a trip to Amsterdam, this is where things for the pair start to go downhill and fast as Carson finds himself out of cash and Sarah accuses him of stealing and using her - which as we read , we can glimpse this is from her past where she had been verbally abused by her father. This part of the book I could relate to well , as I have been through similar circumstances and you do start to wonder - whether they really do like you or whether you are being the butt of their jokes. This book finishes on a wee cliffhanger and leaves me wondering whether Sarah and Carson will ever get their HEA. I am hoping the author will conclude Sarah's story as she did Camie's in What Happens Abroad.
