What happens when a powerful, weapons-grade nuclear device detonates just miles from your home? What happens to the fabric of everyday life in the fallout zone of a massive nuclear blast? As the world marks 70 years since the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, see how Phoenix, Arizona responds to the physical and emotional devastation of a nuclear bomb detonating in the city's busy downtown in this short fictional story. See how the federal government, the military and the state government respond and react to this unprecedented peacetime nuclear blast in the heart of a large city. This story follows the first 24 hours of the crisis through the lives of four college students who survive, and must deal with, this exploson that changes their lives forever. For instance, when the bomb disables the city's cellphone network, this disruption of service is not just an annoyance, but rather a demonstration of how important ---and fragile--- communications networks can be in modern society. This story is not about a terrorist plot or an international conflict. Rather, this story shows how a sudden, unexpected, violent event can forever alter the lives of a city and its people.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting, but some errors in detail sorta kill it. By HouseAtreus Good if tiny book. No real gripes except it needs to be developed into a full novel. Some of the characters are a bit stiff and some of the details are a bit off.***SPOILERS******SPOILERS******SPOILERS***I think the book mentioned Phoenix was hit with a 300 kt nuke, but the city was still standing. Uhm. No. The 13 to 20 kt nukes that hit Nagasaki and Hiroshima levelled the cities. A 300 kt nuke would have blasted Phoenix to atoms. The boys were what, 2 to 3 miles away but in a regular basement? A 300 kt nuke would have incinerated the house, sucked them out of the basement, and everything within about a 7 mile radius would be vaporized, burning out of control, killed by thermal pulse, impaled by objects moving from the superheated overpressure....Yah details like this make all the difference in the world to those of us who read enough of this material that the details matter. Saying a 300kt nuke allowed a single stick of a city on flat ground like Phoenix to even semi sorta survive is much like saying a BB gun destroyed a Stryker combat vehicle. It so breaks the threat that suspension of disbelief is called into question.Author definitely needs to flesh out the characters and please get details about nuclear weapons right. Put it the other way: this is a mistake like saying one single hand grenade brought down Trade 1 and Trade 2 on 9/11.
