If as Dostoevsky says, "Beauty will save the world," it is because beauty arises only in the presence of love. Without love, there is nothing beautiful. There is nothing valuable. There is nothing meaningful. Meaning arises and transformation occurs through the call and response of personal encounter when we discover a third presence Who offers us being-in-relationship that is greater than the determinism and inertia of biological life. The stories and reflections in this volume are offered in celebration of the One who, in surprising ways and unexpected circumstances, becomes the precious and pure gift of our being bread so that we may live the mystery of becoming bread for others. I wish this for all who read this book.

Review The kind of book Orthodox Christians long for who want uplifiting devotional reading for today....filled with stories grounded in an Orthodox understanding of what life fully lived in Christ looks like. By offering us twenty-five morsels of being bread, Dr. Muse teaches us how to become bread, to be fully human in Christ. You can read the book fairly quickly for the delightful collection of stories it is, or you can stop and chew each one slowly...I recommend the book that way. It's much better the second time. From the Inside Flap Here is a book rich with insight into being able to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, the sacramental and therefore relational nature of everyone and everything -- and the consequences of this vision for how we ought to live as believers. Fr. Steven Tsichlis, St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church, Irvine, CA
From the Back Cover "This inspiring book will help many people break out of their customary way of viewing life. The questions at the end of each chapter do not let the reader be merely content with enjoying the insightful ideas, but they gently invite a deeper look within. It would be a good thing for people to read before going to confession!" Hieromonk Ephraim"Stephen Muse's finely-written book is full of profound insights, eyebrow-raising surprises and unforgettable stories. Muse adds new depths to a sentence most of us pray at least once daily, 'Give us this day our daily bread.'" Jim Forest, author of All is Grace; Saint George & the Dragon; For the Peace From Above; Silent as a Stone "Pouring over these sustaining narratives I startled to joyful recognition at having come upon another brother along the way who is being drawn along the journey of prayer, which is also the journey to prayer, which is abundant life in Christ. Δόξα τῷ Θεῷ!!" Scott Cairns, Author of Slow Pilgrim (originally Short Trip to the Edge)"Rarely is the depth of God's love of the cosmos and of each of us tasted so enjoyably." Dr. Demetra Velisarios Jaquet, D.Min., Clinical Director, Rocky Mountain Center for Spiritual Caregivers

Stephenson Planned to read Stephen Muse's book slowly throughout the Lenten season as part of my spiritual discipline. It's not even the 3rd Sunday in Lent and I've finished the book, it was that compelling. Muse not only pays close attention to the people and world around him, but to the tidal forces at work in his own soul. The result is an exceptional book of spiritual insights and a deeper conversation than the reader may have anticipated. Bless you Stephen for being bread for my soul!

Life Stories By Audiophile I really liked this book because the author uses his own life experiences to illustrate the spiritual concepts he is trying to convey. There are too many Christian books out there that are urging you on to the Christian life and you can feel lectured. Stephen Muse uses many of his own "stories" to get his point across so that you can enter into them and feel the feelings of the people involved and feel involved yourself. It is much easier to "get the point" for yourself if you are seeing it in a third party.Additionally, there are a set of questions at the end of each chapter so you can further ponder the concepts included there in and hopefully lead to a deeper look within.

The stories in here are penetrating areas that I have been walling off. I first read the title as "being bread" but it translated in my mind as DOING bread. It occurred to me I have been trying to "DO" being.None of these people in these stories planned out "being bread". They just were, and and that they were "Being Bread."The stories in this book are born from years of being present, not only with the creator, but also with others.
