At seventeen, Lain Fisher has already aced the Institute’s elite training program for Mindwalkers, therapists who use a direct neural link to erase a patient’s traumatic memories. A prodigy and the daughter of a renowned scientist—whose unexplained death left her alone in the world—Lain is driven by the need to save others. When Steven, a troubled classmate, asks her to wipe a horrific childhood experience from his mind, Lain’s superiors warn her to stay away. Steven’s scars are too deep, they say; the risk too great. Yet the more time Lain spends with him, the more she begins to question everything about her society. As she defies the warnings and explores Steven’s memories, it becomes clear that he’s connected to something much bigger . . . something the Institute doesn’t want the world to discover. Lain never expected to be a rule breaker. She certainly didn’t plan on falling in love with a boy she’s been forbidden to help. But then, she never expected to stumble into a conspiracy that could ignite a revolution.

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Lain lives alone, with only her stuffed squirrel, Nutter, for comfort; her holographic cat to meet her information needs; and a housekeeper who comes three times a week, to keep things running smoothly. When she's not in high school, the 17-year-old trains as a Mindwalker, an elite position wherein she helps troubled clients forget everything from painful romantic breakups to war crimes. Lain has the gifts to be one of the best Mindwalkers ever, but the frequent neural links with trauma victims are taking their toll on her own mental and physical health. In this highly controlled future, cloning is common, suicide pills are advertised openly, and shock collars are placed on those the authorities deem unstable. When Steven, a desperate Type Four classmate begs her to help him forget a childhood trauma, she goes against Dr. Swan and those at the Institute for Ethics in Neurotechnology, and sees him in secret. Steven's memories are more complicated and dangerous than either teen imagined, and it isn't long before Lain and Steven have short-circuited her self-driving car and gone on the run. As their friendship turns into mutual attraction, they realize that continuing to look for answers could prove deadly. This novel is more dystopian romance than pure science fiction. VERDICT This is unlikely to linger long in most readers' minds; an additional purchase for large libraries.—Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley School, Fort Worth, TX

By B This is one book that nicely balances out the gloom of your standard oppressive society with equal parts conviction, courage, hope and perhaps most importantly, humor. (I laughed so hard at one scene where Steven and a talking car have a, shall we say, difference of opinion. That would be me, in that situation - there is a reason I do NOT want any of my machines talking back to me!) The characters are easy to relate to and their stubbornness in refusing to back down in the face of overwhelming odds is endearing and engaging. Lain might be a little naive at first, but who wouldn't be in a dystopian society where information is controlled and doled out according to merit? That naivete quickly evaporates the more she and Steven dig into the latter's past, and those who were thought to be enemies turn out to be friends, while friends are revealed to be...not such great friends, while Lain must continually develop her wit and resourcefulness (which she does rather admirably, considering the opposition) in order to stay a step ahead of those who would control/destroy her. I can't wait for the sequel. I would love to see this series turned into a movie or even a TV plot; I think its suspense would make for some great action-thrillers.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a thought-provoking thriller By Logan In the midst of reading Mindwalker I would occasionally forget about its futuristic setting altogether. The world of this story feels a little too familiar and believable to require much suspension of disbelief, despite the leaps in technology at its heart. The protagonist, Lain Fisher, is a gifted but otherwise ordinary young woman duty-bound to her role as a Mindwalker: a techno-psychic therapist of sorts whose mastery of the Mindgate allows her to scrub whatever traumatic memories her clients wish to forget. It's neither a glamorous job nor one she feels ethically certain of, but the compassion she feels for her patients and the manipulative influence of her troublingly invasive mentor and boss have left her reluctant to buck the system. That is, until the catalyst of the story, a classmate named Steven who is ineligible for treatment, approaches her for help. Their initial caregiver-patient relationship begins to change as Lain explores Steven's past and encounters more than either of them expected. This isn't the first novel that's dealt with social issues like mass surveillance and the stigmatization of marginalized groups (nor will it even come close to being the last, seeing how these problems aren't going away any time soon) but Mindwalker offers a contemporary take on these oft-tread topics that's surprisingly thoughtful and imaginative.

Should someone be allowed to have their memories modified if they believe that it will result in a better life for them? That’s the question posed in AJ Steiger’s novel, MINDWALKER. And let me tell you, whatever you’re thinking now will be challenged over and over again while you read this book.I read a lot, as you probably know. But this book was one that I looked forward to being able to pick back up all day – seriously, it’s that good. With short, easy to read chapters I never felt like I was going to spend too long on any one section but then I would look up and it’d be an hour later and I’d have put away another 5 chapters. If you ask me, that’s a sign of a very good book.In MINDWALKER, we get to know a young girl named Lain who is training to become a mindwalker. A mindwalker is a highly trained specialist who goes into the minds of their patient in order to alter or erasure memories. But it isn’t always as simple as performing a standard procedure. As we get to know Lain better, we learn of her familial connection to the beginning of mindwalking and how that affects her when she is approached by someone she has been forbidden from seeing for help.Faced with deciding whether to go against her training and help out a new friend knowing that if she does, she will be forgotten from his mind completely or whether to play by the rules and live with the guilt that comes from not helping others, Lain must choose wisely – but it’s by no means an easy choice.Stalking, brainwashing, lies, deceit, love, and some past-paced action will have you unable to put this book down. Trust me on this one, each twist and turn – often at each turn of the page – will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen next, something totally plot altering would happen and I would have to keep reading in order to know what happened.I was both relieved and sad when I reached the end of this one. Relieved because everything works out for either good or bad. But the ending is fulfilling which is something that I love. But sad because throughout this book I became so attached to the characters that I feel I could have continued to follow them for longer even though I was left with a basic idea of what was going to come of them.If you love dystopian novels that somehow resonate profoundly with the present, pick up this book today. I promise you won’t be disappointed. It’s the perfect weekend read.
