Julia Urquidi y MVLL "El Escritor" By Victor Gonzaga MVLL es considerado actualmente como uno de los escritores más representativos de la Literatura moderna y el eterno candidato a ganar el Premio Nobel. Su estilo ha innovado la narrativa y, valiéndose de técnicas ingeniosas, le ha proporcionado un dinamismo especial a sus novelas, favoreciendo su lectura fluida y canivalesca -a pesar de los pequeños espacios de tiempo que me permiten leer, he podido devorar a cada uno de sus personajez con una avidez pocas veces experimentada con otros escritores.En esta novela MVLL demuestra sus habilidades para entretener al lector a través de un humorismo sutíl que arrebatan carcajadas durante su lectura.El título, "La Tia Julia y el Escribidor", refleja de manera amplia y rígida la temática de esta novela. Por un lado nos cuenta la historia de Julia (Urquidi) -cuñada del tio Lucho (Llosa) y, por lo tanto, su tia política- con quien sostuvo un amor desenfrenado que no admitia barreras ni prejuicios sociales (ella tenia 32 y él sólo 18) y el cual culminaría en un matrimonio original y divertido.La otra historia referida, y que se desenvuelve paralelamente a la ya comentada, describe de cuerpo entero las concepciones que, el entonces novel escritor, tenia (y que con el tiempo se lo ha tomado más que en serio en la vida real) acerca de su profesión. Estas concepciones estarían disfrazadas de un personaje más que peculiar, Pedro Camacho "El escribidor". Pedro Camacho simboliza, según una opinión personal y más alla de lo cómico que nos pueda parecer este personaje, al escritor "ideal": escribe más de 15 horas al día, su vida está dedicada en cuerpo y alma a la invención de nuevas historias. Y el rasgo más importante: cual Mario Vargas Llosa, sus historias son vivenciales, es decir, surgen de situaciones reales y las entremezcla con sus propias invenciones.No acostumbro a recomendar libros ni escritores pero si a calificarlos. En ese caso diría que MVLL, sin temor a equivocarme, es uno de los mejores escritores de la actualidad y, al igual como todas sus novelas, "La Tia Julia y el Escribidor" mantiene esa calidad que caracteriza a las publicaciones de MVLL.

The Indiscreet Charm of the Lumpenbourgeoisie By Gio Yes, Life is a telenovela, a serial soap opera, an improvised melodrama, an episodic absurdity that we insist on treating seriously. Latin American authors like Mario Vargas Llosa perhaps have the advantage over 'Northerners' in their shameless acceptance of the buffoonery of living one day at a time. "Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter" is hilarious, one of the funniest books I've read in years, a soap opera about the writing of soap operas. The 18-year old wannabe writer Varguitas -- Vargas Llosa himself -- defies propriety, law, and his sprawling family network by wooing and eventually eloping with his aunt's husband's divorced sister-in-law, the 32-year-old best friend of his own mother, whom he has known as Aunt Julia since his infancy. Varguitas is a dilatory law student with a shoestring income from a job at a radio station. That job brings him in contact with Pedro Camacho, a bizarre scriptwriter of soap operas who resembles nobody so much as one of the dwarf jesters of a Habsburg monarch in Peru's colonial past. Chapters of the author's ludicrous youthful romance alternate with episodes from Camacho's increasingly chaotic serials. Blessedly, there's no need for "magic realism" in this autobiographical "ensalada"; as Camacho skitters into madness and kills off his characters because he can't remember what roles he's assigned them in earlier episodes, his extravagant fictions and Varguitas's puppy-love pratfalls meld together in comic mayhem. "Life" is plenty surreal without "magic".Mario Vargas Llosa is not, as far as I can tell, an admirable figure. He's precisely the narcissistic elitist that his boyish character Varguitas promises to grow up to be. Not unlike Ronald Reagan, he started his career as a naive fashionable Leftist, but as fame and prosperity affected him, he shifted to the Right, became political and even a candidate for the presidency of his country, though without Reagan's success. Vargas Llosa is usually categorized, these days, as a "neoliberal", a term that translates from the international language of political science roughly as "conservative" in American English. In fact, he has become a Spanish citizen who lives chiefly in London and who is perceived in Latin America as more of an heir of Porfirio Diaz than an advocate of cultural autonomy, a spokesman for the largely 'white' urban capitalists who tacitly regard the indigenous Andean cultures as an obstacle to progress. As a social engineer, Vargas Llosa would fit neatly into Joseph Conrad's novel Nostromo, a dead ringer for the ambiguous fictional developer Charles Gould. But there's no law, is there, that a great comic writer has to be a wise person? or even a decent human being?I've had trouble with some of Vargas Llosa's more earnest historical fiction, and I find the last chapter of "Tia Julia" a definite letdown, as the author tries to reclaim his dignity and apologize for his impetuous antics by detailing his later accomplishments. His real-life marriage to Julia lasted some eight years, which the author seems to proclaim as evidence of his virtues as a husband. The real-life Julia has voiced an alternate opinion, accusing him of slighting her role in his early literary successes, in a book titled "What Varguitas Didn't Tell". But "La Tia" has been a huge best-seller, one of Vargas Llosa's most popular books, made into a film, and the popularity is justified. As I said, it's hilarious, a Marx Brothers romp of a novel, in which Peruvian politics and economic conditions are merely stage props. Strange to say, I find it inadvertently quite revealing as a political document. Varguitas and his maze of a family are perfect examples of the social structures that plague Latin America. The Llosas and Vargases are typical of the "better families" of light complexion and operatic pretentiousness in the capital cities like Lima, Buenos Aires, or Mexico DF. They don't belong among the tiny oligarchy of super-wealth based on latifundia, though any 'contact' they might have with that ruling class is of immense pride and occasional utility for them. They are ever-anxious not to be submerged into the huge class of the mestizo/indigenous peasant poor. They are unique to the Third World, a "Lumpen Bourgeoisie", neither rich nor vigorous but yet the timorous mainstay of the Right Wing oligarchs and dictators. Ironically then, this burlesque comedy of a novel is a vivid portrayal of why Peru and other Latin American nations have been so unstable and unsuccessful as democracies.Vargas Llosa is a challengingly 'idiomatic' stylist in Spanish. This novel is replete with the slang of Lima, localized both in place and in time (the 1950s). It's been a tough 'project' to read it in Spanish, but that's the way to go, if you can. In translation, Vargas Llosa, Julio Cortázar, Garcia Marquez and other Latin American writers can certainly be entertaining, but are a lot like enchiladas without the salsa.

Durante la novela, MVLL nos prueba lo lleno de vicisitudes que esta la vida y nos demuestra con los cuentos de Pedro Camacho lo inagotable que es la mente. Con mucha originalidad MVLL va creando ambiguedades y similitudes en el progreso de la novela y nos lleva hasta el punto en que la mente enreda lo que es real y lo que es ficcion dentro de la ficcion. El personaje que a mi me gusto mas fue el escriba Boliviano, en quien se puede apreciar los sube y bajas que tiene la vida. El es un personaje con muchas manias, costumbres extranas y un odio singular por los Argentinos. MVLL nos ofrece con esta novela ensenansas inolvidables, cuentos que se salen de lo comun sembrando incertidumbre en el lector y emocionantes aventuras en una historia que es intrigante hata la ultima pagina.
