Berton Spence The Grey Castle is a rare find; a book suitable for children that explores adult themes in an adventurous, inoffensive setting and style. Through the eyes of a young, medieval woman who undergoes a startling transformation (no spoilers!), Briggs presents themes of love, sacrifice, responsibility, loyalty and duty. Her eye for natural details (believable portrayals of survival in the outdoors) is solid. The story is a true page-turner even for adults (I'm "of a certain age" and enjoyed it tremendously while reading it to be aware of what my 9- and 14-year-old were reading). In certain ways, The Grey Castle is reminiscent of "The Book of Three" series by Lloyd Alexander, though his books seem to have been designed for a mostly-male audience. Briggs has written an adventure enjoyable by boys and girls of all ages. I look forward to seeing more from her.

Sands As a 6th grader looking for rich, enchanting books, I found The Grey Castle and immediately became interested. Orphaned when she was young, Fifel is taken in at a bakery, where she bakes cakes, cleans dishes, and more in return for food and shelter. Angry at a cat that ruins a wedding cake, Fifel accidentally kills it with her broom. Then, the cat's owner, who is a witch, finds out about the accident. Turning Fifel into a wolf, Fifle is forced to run and hide in the woods where she eventually meets a knight. She tells him her secret and they become great friends. Sadly, no one else in the castle can know that Garret's pet wolf is a real girl, or else they will think she is a demon/witch and kill her. When war breaks between Garret's castle and a neighboring one, Fifel run's away to find help. Along the way, she realizes that she loves Garret, but then scolds herself for thinking that a human could ever love a wolf. The book does have some language, so I would recommend ages 10+. The ending is amazing, with battles, betrayal, and love tied all in-between. Read The Grey Castle, it's a captivating book!

I bought this book from my Latin teacher because the author is her daughter. Also, i take dance at the same place where the author took and she was one of my assistants in 4th grade. I recommend this book for tweens and teens because it has some language that only older kids would understand and if were a parent i would not want an 8 year old asking questions every minute of the day. Over all i recommend this book for any one who loves fairy tales and love stories.
