Hungry. It always comes down to that. You are so hungry. How can one person think about food so much? It could be that you are dreaming, so no matter how much you consume you are never satiated. That, or you are dead and suffering an eternity in... Best not to think about that. It must be a dream. It has all the qualities of one. More specifically, a nightmare. You’ve wandered this same, nameless town for countless hours. You’ve had lunch, dinner, and even walked until sunrise and then had breakfast. But what time of day is it now? You’re not sure. The clouds have blotted away any light and smeared away all sense of time. The rain begins to fall. You’d better take cover in one of the shops lining the barren streets. There, off in the distance. You see a store that has lights on inside. It beckons you. Covering your head with your shirt pulled up to protect yourself from the downpour, you race towards it. When you get closer, you can see it is an ice cream parlor. The face of a maniacal clown adorns the door. You walk in. A banner over the bar reads “Endless Sundae Challenge”. You’re just hungry enough to try. Motioning to the clerk behind the glass counter, you point to the banner. She smiles, revealing toothless gums. You look around and see that all the patrons are smiling. All are entirely toothless. Which kinds do you want? Your dessert today is thirteen flavors, including: • A call center during the zombie apocalypse offers lackluster customer service to hapless survivors • Feral pigs devour everything in sight, leaving not a trace of anyone or anything • A young girl plays with “fart putty”, which miraculously comes alive and searches for victims to consume The clerk brings out your sundae. As you put the spoon in the frozen delight, you begin to salivate. Wait, you realize, that isn’t saliva. It’s blood. Your teeth have begun to fall out! You hear the echoed laughter of a clown as you uncontrollably dip your spoon into the ice cream treat. You don’t need teeth for ice cream, after all.

I would compare them to spicy comfort food, the kind you would find at an old-fashioned county fair. Irresistible and addictive!Brian James Lane crafts a spine chilling mood right from the first word. Within minutes of reading these stories I was transformed back into a little kid on Halloween night, giddy and excited. The stories are a mixture of nostalgic horror regulars (vampires, zombies, witches, etc) with surprising new elements and twists. The best part, though, is the writer's winks at human nature. For example, anyone who has dealt with customer service can relate to the story "Zombie Call Center." This was my favorite story and a must read! Another one was about a boy who goes night fishing. I was surprised by the ending, but then I thought to myself, "Of course! Knowing how people think, how else could this story have ended?" and then I laughed at myself for not seeing it sooner.Like the other books in the series, Fright Feast 4 is a deliciously creepy treat, perfect for a late night read in front of the fire.

Old Fashion Horror By JCStreetSoldier Lane's collection of short stories in Fright Feast IV remind me of Twilight Zone episodes (or perhaps Tales from the Crypt might be a better comparison). They vary from genre, but still stay within the lines of macabre. The short stories are really, really short; The Giant Problem, which is the last short story, is only a couple pages, so even if you don't have an attention span you'll find some stories that you like. Pigormortis was my favorite short story.
