8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. 3 Stars By Book Flame I've heard a lot about Sarah Ockler books so I decided to take the plunge and finally read one and I am going to be honest, I didn't love it, but I did like it. My enjoyment of the book definitely stemmed from her writing which I found beautiful and I just wanted to keep reading, she made everyday actions sound beautiful.Elyse was a bit of a mystery. We know she lost her voice and that she fled her home in Tobago leaving all her family behind, but we didn't know why and what exactly happened besides it having to do something with her twin. I liked Elyse for the most part, she felt real, the way someone would act if they had gone through what she did. She was angry with her situation while learning how to deal with her new life of not being able to speak or sing, there is the case of her feeling sorry for herself a lot so that kind of bugged me about her but still it was realistic it was just a bit of a downer. Then there was the fact that everyone treated her like a broken doll, well everyone except Christian.The romance between Christian and Elyse was cute and sweet, but I wasn't really feeling it. Christian didn't really interest me much or make me swoon in any way. Yet at the same time he was what Elyse needed so I had nothing against the two of them getting together. I did like the relationship Elyse developed with Christians little brother apparently his little brother likes girly things including wanting to be a mermaid for a parade so you have that issue tackled in the story since the town they live in people are a bit close minded. I loved Elyse for sticking up for him and being able to put her pity party on hold to help Sebastian out, that kid was seriously awesome I hated everyone who was against him being happy, which also leads me to Christian and I have to say even though as a love interest he was a little blah for my likes he was an amazing brother.Even though I liked the book, I just didn't feel a real connection with it or the characters. Like I said earlier I liked Elyse but I didn't really care about her, I easily was able to put the book down and not have the urge to hurry up and pick it back up to see what happens next. Honestly, the only person I cared about was Sebastian but, unfortunately, the book wasn't in his point of view.Overall The Summer of Chasing Mermaids was written very well with its poetic prose but I did find it slow at times. One thing I forgot to mention was I did appreciate the diversity, we definitely are in need of more diverse characters in books nowadays.

The one that you could finish in hours, but you stretch it out over a few days. Memorizing quotes and making note of the moments that made you smile.This is one of those books.There is something about a Sarah Ockler book that takes me back to the first time I ever read one of her novels. Takes me back to sitting out by the pool on a hot summer day, book in my lap, sun on my face. Twenty Boy Summer was the book that sealed the deal for me on summer-fling books. Sweet and sad and beautiful.The Summer of Chasing Mermaids is a gorgeously charming book. I wanted to live in it.Elyse d’Abreau is a transplant from Tobago.She can’t speak.She belongs to the ocean.She can’t resist a sweet little boy on a mermaid mission and his hot, older, sailor brother.And she doesn’t know who the great Tami Taylor is! (Ya’ll. This cracked me up! WWTTD?)!I loved every single character this book contains. From Lemon and her coven to Vanessa and her momma. And especially Sebastian. I LOVED THEM. I want to be in Atargatis Cove immediately.The relation to The Little Mermaid was evident and I geeked out multiple times. It’s beautifully intertwined within the pages. Little clues and easter eggs.As always, Sarah Ockler’s writing gets me. I fall in step with it. I get caught up in the waves and tides (especially with all the ocean business in this one). It reminds me of a Sarah Dessen book, but more mature. More diverse.The Summer of Chasing Mermaids is a stunning book about dealing with the hand life dealt you and finding your voice. The voice that you change the world with (or just a moment).A voice, no matter how small, can make all the difference.The perfect summer book. Saying I love this cover does not even beginning to cover how much I absolutely adore this cover (Yes, I know). Being completely honest, one of the main reasons I decided to read the book NOW and not closer to the release date was because of the cover. It is creative and represents the book Oh! So well! Looking at it (I mean, look at it!) you can see Elyse is dying to say something but she just can't! And the sharpies and the starfish and EVERYTHING ok! Such a gorgeous and creative cover! +1Anyway, the StoryElyse was on her way of becoming a professional performer, her voice was her tool; she was bright, extroverted and brave, but after losing her voice she turned into a shell of what she once was.She escapes to USA, not hoping to start anew, but just to get away from the world she knows. She just wants to be left alone, and hides behind her inability to speak as her excuse.Though when a bet puts her "duller" life at risk, she has to make a decision: live forever in the past, or face it and allow herself to change.The story is nothing over the top, but it is solid and engaging. This was not a love story, it was a coming of age story. An excellent coming of age story. +1The CharactersThe story has a pretty diverse cast, and all the characters were pretty well rounded. But I will speak of the two most relevant.The protagonist is Elyse, she is a sweet girl with a difficult past. I adored her from beginning to end. I adored her so much I would be so disappointed on her when she made a poor choice, and would be so proud when she started to take her baby steps to fight her fears. She was refreshing, and I believe the first character from Trinidad and Tobago that I have ever read! Her story got me so interested in the country, I've search for more information about it and now plan on visiting one day (though that's an story for another day).Christian is her love interest, but he is more than just that; he's got troubles of his own, and his own battles to fight. His story did not revolve around her, which I really appreciated. I loved to bits his brother too!+1Roma(nce) wasn't built in a dayYes, the story is a romance (the cover does not lie) but it is not the core of it, as I mentioned before. The romance developed slowly. There was flirting, sure, they are young after all. But the relationship between Elyse and Christian grew from friendship, and from trust, which is something I do not see much in YA books nowadays.+1Don't go breaking my Heart ♪I could not get enough of this book! It was a page turner. And it caught me right from the start. This book made me feel for Elyse so much (She's my bb don't touch her). I just did not want the story to end! Just one thing I would have liked was to know more (more!) of what happened after the ending.+1In Conclusion:Favourite book this year (so far). Now go and read it!
