Jane is a smart modern woman with a common-sense view of the world By Matthew Posner Over the last few months, I have frequently nagged Mysti to get this written because I was so entertained by Roche Hotel Season One that I wanted more ASAP. Although I am not a frequent reader in this genre, I am loyal to this series because I am a fan of the author whose writing is smooth, polished, and well-adapted to the needs of each individual work. The Roche Hotel series aims to have a TV-sitcom feel. With this second season it moves very close to that goal, with each chapter being structured with the story arc of an episode (including some two-parters). It is full of quirky recurring characters, running jokes, and feelgood moments. Jane is a smart modern woman with a common-sense view of the world. She is also capable of strong feelings; she melts at the touch of her new boyfriend, Henry the Donut Guy, who knows just what to do to make her feel special. (I can't relate to that precisely, but it can make me aspirational; as a husband, I need to provide such moments.) Jane's behavior is never contrived; it's always thoughtful and derives from her history. We have all read novels in which characters are passive (Mary-sues) or foolish. Not in this case. Jane know's what's up, and that is refreshing.Highly recommended.

I also wrote a review that evening that wasn't posted for some reason so I'm rewriting it again here. This is a great short book that I recommend for the humor and storyline. Picking up where she left off at the end of The Roche Hotel: Season One, Mysti Parker hasn't failed to create another fast and fun filled read. Jane Seymour is back again at The Roche Hotel and life is great with her new boyfriend, Henry the Donut Guy, until Jane's sleazy ex-husband Nick shows up trying to worm his way back into her life along with being a thorn in her side as the new assistant manager at the hotel. Naturally, this results in plenty of romantic comedy as Jane tries to keep her relationship with Henry from becoming strained while fending off Nick's advances as she struggles to not kill him at work. The other delightful and quirky staff are back, along with plenty of madcap guests, giving the reader various treats such as escaped reptiles, hilarious parties, and blizzard shenanigans. I found this book to be well written and very fun to read and hope that Mysti gives more adventures at The Roche Hotel in the very near future.

I'll start with the negatives, since they are petty. 1) The book is too short. 2) It reads too quick, 3) Not deep enough storytelling. Now, with that out of the way. This book is exactly what it is advertised, short quirky stories of the daily life of Jane Seymour, a divorcee trying to get her life on track as a Hotel Desk Clerk on the night shift. It doesn't delve deep into her life story, it doesn't explain, in great detail, her love life. What it does, is gives us what the writer wanted, a short episodic tale akin to TV sitcoms. While it was short, it was a fun romp, and a window into her world and the staff at her job. Great storytelling! While the stage isn’t painted in excruciating detail, it has enough substance to see where things are and understand how the space relates. This book is written from Jane’s point of view and rarely, if ever, dips into any other character’s head. Very focused. If you haven’t read the Season one yet, no problem. But I would recommend you do that first, then dive into Season Two of “The Roche Hotel
