Just a Few Inches, by Tara St. Pierre

Review "Just a Few Inches does a great job of discussing some really serious issues in a creative and entertaining way. By employing the twist of having Carrie lose inches in height instead of weight, we get a real look at the old adage, 'Be careful what you wish for.' And the growth that Carrie undergoes in terms of the development of her inner person instead of worrying only about how she is perceived on the outside is an example for any young woman." (4 out of 5 stars)--Tracy Slowiak for Readers' Favorite

To be small enough to fit into this perfect dress for the dance. Carries has tried every way she could think of to get smaller. Nothing really worked for her and she wants a quick fix. That's where weight loss pills come into the picture. Then next thing you know, it did the trick. She has shrunk, looks amazing and can fit into that perfect dress. Now she is going to have the night of her dreams with her boyfriend. After that, things are just great. Then things start to change and not in a good way. She is changing, and now everyone is noticing her and the changes she gone through. Carrie has no idea what is happening. She doesn't know how to fix and now she is getting much more attention than she planned on.This is a good book for body images and pretty much covers a lot of what teens go through. Its worth the read and I'm sure itll help a lot of readers that get their hands on this book. Tara captures things just right and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

Big Physical Shrinkage; HUGE Personal Growth By Elizabeth Mathis Rating: 4.5/5 PenguinsQuick Reasons: penguins, this book is SO important!; the morals in this read, the character growth (in the midst of shrinking), all of it comes together into a stunning blend of horrifying and mind-altering; there were some odd grammar things at the beginning, but TRUST ME—keep reading!; this book will change your perspective if you let itHuge thanks go out to Tara St. Pierre and Createspace Independent Publishing for sending me a copy of this title in exchange for an honest review! This in no way altered my read of or opinions on this book.---But when you're going through something that no one else can fully understand, you come up with alternate interpretations of what others say to you.---When I first started reading, I was worried—there were some weird grammar issues at the beginning that I had trouble overlooking at first. The tense of sentences sometimes shifted and changed without warning—often in the same sentence. Long story short, for the first 10% or so, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this book. But I pushed through...and I am SO SO glad that I did. This book is so important, guys. You have NO idea. This is the second book in as many months I've read with a “tiny” character... Except in this book, she doesn't START already tiny. She becomes so, over the course of seven months and a huge amount of character growth/perspective shifting. It was this journey, and Carrie's reactions to the changes and the world around her, that MADE this book.---Do you want to cut your dress size in half in sixty days?My dress size? Back then, I might have answered yes.My actual size? I would have never answered anything other than no.---Trust me when I say: Carrie Roberts was NOT my ideal character at the beginning of this read. In fact, I got super annoyed with her pretty early on—she was always comparing herself to another girl (the ex of her boyfriend, in fact); she was consistently catty and bordering on immature. She was, without a DOUBT, not the sort of character I could easily identify with—or want to know. BUT. BUT. There is such an immense, satisfying amount of growth in this book. Carrie Roberts may shrink physically, but she grows in so many other important ways. She very quickly became a character I could look up to.The other characters, as well, bring some important messages to readers. The reactions, interactions, and interpretations of the events in this book were both wildly entertaining at times...and heartbreakingly realistic in others. Even the youngest characters are portrayed in ways that teach, that bring perspective, that terrify... This entire read is SO well-crafted, it's bound to stick with me a long time into the future.---No one should be considered average; it's a purely mathematical concept, and though math may have its useful purposes, describing who a person is shouldn't be one of them. We all have the capacity for incredible achievements and incredible change, but those come from the inside, and none of it will happen while we're obsessing about what's on the outside.---I am SO glad that I picked this read up, and that Tara St. Pierre reached out to me to begin with for this review. This book is super important—and so perspective-changing. Carrie shrinks...but she grows so much in all the ways that really matter. I definitely recommend to lovers of mind-altering reads, contemporary books with a hint of science fiction thrown in, and characters with immense amounts of growth. Pick this book up, guys—trust me when I say it's bound to change your world!

You can read my full rave review @[...]5 Reasons To Read Just a Few Inches:#1 Body Image: I wanted to review Tara’s novel because it deals with body image, a topic I really wanted to explore. As someone who cannot shovel junk food in their mouth and get away with it, this is a book I can relate to. Carrie Roberts wants to fit into the perfect red dress for the Valentine’s Day Dance. With her boyfriend’s ex waiting to steal him back, Carrie feels threatened and wants to shed a few pounds to fit into the dress. This is something I think most girls can understand. Personally, I would never change anything about myself for a boy because I live by the philosophy that if you don’t like me the way I am, then you don’t really like me. That’s just me. But I know there are plenty of girls out there that feel the need to fit in and would flip their entire world upside to make someone else happy. The message: Don’t change yourself to fit someone’s standards. They should like you the way you are, and if not, good riddance.#2 Peer Pressure: This is another topic the book addresses. Many girls feel pressured into looking a certain way because of something they saw in a magazine or some mean girl at school who wants to steal her boyfriend, like we see with Carrie and Janelle, the ex-girlfriend. Carrie buys the red dress she doesn’t fit into out of fear Janelle will steal her boyfriend, Todd, away from her. Janelle tells Carrie she won’t fit into the dress, and if she doesn’t buy it that she will because it’s Todd’s favorite color. This leads Carrie to take an obscene amount of diet pills to lose weight, which brings me to my next point.#3 Self-Esteem: I don’t care if you look like Gisele Bündchen or Tyra Banks because everyone struggles with self-esteem issues. Maybe you don’t feel like you’re qualified to take that job, or you’re insecure about your looks, or that bad grade you received in math class is really taking a toll on how you feel about the rest of the semester. Whatever the reason, we all deal with this at some point in our lives. And I like that Tara addresses this in her book. Carrie is not overweight. She’s an average sized cheerleader, popular enough that’s she’s dating the star of the basketball team. She’s probably the girl in high school you’d be the most surprised about her insecurities, but I liked the way she handled her situation once she started shrinking.Read my full review and enter for a chance to win a free copy of Just a Few Inches: [...]
