Review Reviewed By Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite"The flawless, straightforward prose narrated in a first person point of view creates a highly engrossing story. Therefore, it is no surprise that every page is engaging. Running features a fascinating cast, particularly Kate. She is a fine protagonist; a strong-willed yet sensitive teen courageously trying to make sure both she and her brother survive their harsh life. The chapters are short which paves way for a very swift read..."

A tastefully done fantasy slash supernatural slash thriller with a sense of reality that is full of surprises and unexpected scenes. Kate, her siblings and acquaintances are the kind of characters that readers won't help but feel a mixture of being sorry for and at the same time cheering them on to succeed at something - anything!Unfortunately some of the tragedies that they go through in the book is only too real and present in the real world. If the reader knows someone who has gone through either the loss of a parent(s), experienced the dog eat dog mentally of the streets as well as being familiar with the unusual yet strong bonds that form because of this sort of upbringing then they will feel both sympathy and compassion for these kids.Reader beware that you will experience some strong emotions through Bryce's use of descriptive language in exploring the thoughts and feelings of the characters. Feelings of betrayal, agony, heartbreak, distress, misery and desolation abound but also that of hope, love, encouragement, motivation and inspiration. It is a fulfilling story that will leave readers satisfied after a roller coaster of emotions. The ending was unexpected (for me) but at the same time, looking back, it is something that I should have thought about as it was a perfect fit to the rest of the story. As I mentioned in the beginning, this is the kind of work that I would have no qualms in reading over and over again.

I can honestly say I have never really read a book like it before. From the very beginning you are thrust into the sad and tragic life of Kate and her misfit companions. You see the dark sides, and the often contradictory sides, or the human psyche. This is not a fairy tale or a light hearted book. It is gritty and real and and difficult just like real life. The Red Riding Hood references are hard to ignore and the idea that this is a warped abstract of that tale is very intriguing.I though the prose was well written, the characters three dimensional and very easy to feel for and fall in love with. There is no fault I could find for this book. The plot itself keeps you frantically turning the pages. The short bursts of chapters keeps the momentum going. To say that there are twists in this book would be a complete understatement. I never once thought I had this book figured out and I was right, I didn't. I couldn't have. The ending was just as heart breaking and incredible as the beginning and the middle. I would recommend this short book to anyone and everyone. This is a dark, drab, and painful story, with some light there is no doubt. But the image of the bungalow in this book is very much a great description of the story. Dark, rotting, crumbling. Full of secrets and junk that needs clearing. Well down S.C. Bryce, well done.

"Be prepared to experience intense heart pounding emotion!" 5/5 Stars By Holly Newhouse, Eternal Book Reviews "Be prepared to experience intense heart pounding emotion!" 5/5 Stars This was an amazing young adult book! It's the first of it's kind that this reviewer has ever read. It's definitely in a class of its own. Kate and her siblings are taken in and cared for by Mannis who growls a great deal but underneath he's a caring man doing the best he knows how to take care of the kids. The three orphans go through a series of misadventures. There are a lot of twists and turns, many that you don't even see coming until after it's happened. I will warn you that you won't figure it all out, won't put all of the pieces together until the very end - why everything played out the way it did in the book and that is pure genius on the part of the author! I never expected it and at the end had a huge Ah Hah! moment when all of the pieces finally came together and everything clicked into place. This book is magnificent, I just can't say that enough! It's well written and extremely intense and engaging to the point where you won't be able to put it down until you have read it to the very end. I began reading this book, being capture and drawn in from the first page and it kept its hold onto me until the end and what felt like only a few minutes had passed, I was shocked to see that in reality, three hours had passed! That does not happen to me very often. Now, onto the nitty gritty stuff. As I said, the book is well written by a master storyteller. I could visualize every character and every scene in the book without any issues at all. The whole book flowed quite nicely. Each character's background and how they came to be together, as well as the characters' development, plot and storyline were all masterfully crafted by Author SC Bryce. The scenes were logical in sequence. There was a sufficient amount of down time between intense scenes allowing for a build up to the next intense one. Every action can be clearly "seen" visually. The character dialogue was perfect allowing the reader to see what the characters were doing while speaking and were extremely realistic as were the scenes. Overall, this book was brilliantly done and written. I highly recommend this book not only to young adults but to adults as well who like a refreshing new read that is in a caliber all of it's own!Reviewed by Holly Newhouse for Eternal Book Reviews
