From debut author and poet Lexa Hillyer comes the lyrical story of four seventeen-year-old friends who receive an unlikely chance to relive the perfect summer . . . and the devastating secret that could unravel it all. Elegant and evocative, Proof of Forever is one of those first novels that hooks you from the beginning and builds toward a stunning—and unexpected—end, calling to mind Gayle Forman and Ann Brashares.

Joy, Tali, Luce, and Zoe were once best friends. Now they barely speak. That is, until the fateful flash of a photo-booth camera transports them back in time, to the summer they were fifteen—the summer everything changed. Photos fade. Friendships dissolve. Summers end. But this one will change the girls forever . . . again.

Wendy Wunder calls Proof of Forever "The Sisterhood of the (Time) Traveling Pants for a new generation!"

From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—Before heading off to college, Joy, Tali, Luce, and Zoe attend their summer camp reunion. While in a photo booth, they suddenly find that—poof!—they are back in time. They immediately devise a plan to re-create that last week at camp, hoping it triggers the portal to return to the future. The alternating narratives of each girl relive past slights and joys and enable each character to learn more about who she really is as a person and friend. Reader Emily Woo Zeller tries to give each of the girls a unique voice, but ultimately they all end up sounding similar. The girls themselves are quite one-dimensional (there is the smart one, the pretty one, the gay one, and the quiet one), and it is difficult to see how they were ever friends to begin with. VERDICT While the story deals with heavy topics, such as sexual orientation and death, the plot and characters remain very shallow.—Suzanne Dix, The Seven Hills School, Cincinnati, OH

Review “A beautifully written testament to the power of friendship and the possibility of second chances, told with humor, heart, and a little bit of magic.” (Jennifer E. Smith, author of The Geography of You and Me)“Sexy, soulful, and surprising.” (Corey Ann Haydu, author of O.C.D. LOVE STORY and LIFE BY COMMITTEE)“Complex and sophisticated, Proof of Forever is The Sisterhood of the (Time) Traveling Pants for a new generation! You will love this memorable, sparkling debut!” (--Wendy Wunder, author of The Museum of Intangible Things and The Probability of Miracles)“A quintessential summer novel...This novel will appeal to fans of Sarah Dessen, Jennifer E. Smith, and Ann Brashares. VERDICT Hillyer has penned a tale ideal for readers seeking something sweet tinged with a hint of sadness.” (School Library Journal)“A quick, enjoyable read that should resonate with readers on the cusp of adulthood.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Fluid and layered with emotion.” (Publishers Weekly)“Poignant and surprising...a perfect summer read.” (RT Book Reviews)“An edgier, more risqué version of Ann Brashares’ Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2001), Proof of Forever features four authentic teenage voices and unique perspectives that will encourage readers to reevaluate their own friendships, love interests, and philosophies of life.” (Booklist)“In the vein of Sarah Dessen or Ann Brashares, Proof of Forever is an ode to summer camp...a perfect read for a sprawling summer day.” (BookPage)

From the Back Cover

Before: It was the perfect summer of first kisses, skinny-dipping, and bonfires by the lake. Joy, Tali, Luce, and Zoe knew their final summer at Camp Okahatchee would come to an end, but they swore they'd stay friends.

After: Now, two years later, their bond has faded, along with those memories.

THEN: That is, until the fateful flash of a photo-booth camera transports the four of them back in time, to the summer they were fifteen—the summer everything changed.

Now: The girls must re-create the past in order to return to the present. As they live through their second-chance summer, the mystery behind their lost friendship unravels, and a dark secret threatens to tear the girls apart all over again.

Always: Summers end. But this one will change them forever.

By YA Book Madness Blog ***I received this book as a giftProof of Forever is about the bonds of friendship, the trouble of growing up, and the bittersweet yearning for the past.PROS:Proof of Forever captures the painful reality of friends growing apart with growing up. The confusion and hurt over what when wrong and how it fell apart so quickly is raw and poignant. Each character has their own set of issues to deal with both in the past and present. The road to self discovery is gained through remembering who they used to be with the help of good friends lost to time. There is a fair bit of diversity and social commentary that isn’t blatant or in your face, it’s a slow forming revelation that brings a greater emotional depth to each story. People of color, LGBT, social classes all mix in and bring a complexity to the story that makes it more real.I loved Joy’s story. Her struggles, the fire of new love, her desire to explore and conquer her fears were all powerful and beautiful.CONS:Some sections are slow and a bit boring.Conflicts were left unresolved. The discoveries in the past clashed with those in the current time and were left unspoken for in the future. Each girl’s story becomes more individual and personal when the point was to rekindle their friendship. It got a little lost.

Flashes of special moments and the infinity symbol works so well.Four best friends who haven't been together for two years return to camp for a one-night reunion. That one night turns into five when the photo booth they're in takes them back in time.Memorable, bittersweet, romantic. From page one, PROOF OF FOREVER grabbed my attention. We find out that four camp friends—Joy, Tali, Luce, and Zoe—have grown apart. But Joy insists that they all attend their camp reunion.Coming together isn't easy. There are a lot of hurt feelings, plenty of miscommunication, resentment, but also a lot of love below the surface. If only they can recapture why they had been so close and resolve the past hurt.As they return to the past and relive their last camp experience, they not only try to figure out how to return to the present, but also to understand each other. They try to relive it as they had in order to recreate a photograph from the Photo Booth, thinking that will be the key.Of course, that's not easy at all.I love . . .1. that the girls end up unitizing this time to discover more about themselves, both individually and as a group.2. that choices made have various results, often not what they had intended.3. that we discover painful secrets.4. that the bonds of friendship, despite hurt feelings, can indeed prevail if you're willing to work hard enough and forgive.5. the swoony-boy relationships that a few of the girls experience.6. the realization that their quick judgments of others are sometimes false, that they need to get to know other campers more intimately to understand them.7. that we have to live life for ourselves, not to please others.8. the emotional ending!!!!PROOF OF FOREVER is about self-identity, love, family, healing, deep relationships, and letting go when it's needed. It's about ties that can never be severed. It's a beautiful, touching, emotional story of the power of friendship—how it brings us together or tears us apart, how it grounds us in a place like tree roots that can make us feel safe or shake us up and leave us floating away like helium balloon strings that have been released into the sky, leaving us drifting away from the people we love, those we thought should have held tight. The writing and storytelling is gorgeous! This is a perfect summer read for anyone who loves a contemporary YA novel with a twist of fantasy, time travel, magic, love, and of course FRIENDSHIP!

Bristol "Proof of Forever," begins when its four main characters: tomboyish, sci-fi fan Zoe; A-list Tali; straight-A Luce and optimistic Joy of the mysterious secret reunite at a summer camp reunion. They've long since drifted apart and are more concerned with their own romance and family issues than each other's. However, when they are all flung back in time two years ago to a particular summer at camp, it seems like their only chance to getting back to the future is to repeat a photo shoot at the end of the week. Now the girls must deal with such issues as the loss of well-developed breasts (really), the possibility that one of their parent's is having an affair, as well as love interests who may or may not be the ones they remember ending up with in the present. As their fateful day approaches, each girl must figure out who she is and what kind of person she wants to be with. This book had an interesting premise, and I wanted to like it more than I did. I really liked Zoe's and Joy's sections, but I couldn't really sympathize with Tali and Luce. I also felt the pace dragged a bit, and there were many characters mentioned briefly as if the reader was supposed to know who they were but who never appeared again. Overall, it's a sweet story, but could have used more character and plot development.
