Debut author Joshua McCune's gritty and heart-pounding novel is a masterful reimagining of popular dragon fantasy set in a militant future reminiscent of Paolo Bacigalupi's Ship Breaker and Ann Aguirre's Outpost. The Horn Book called it "absolutely gripping and absolutely horrifying."

It's a high-school prank gone horribly wrong—sneaking onto the rez to pose next to a sleeping dragon—and now senior Melissa Callahan has become an unsuspecting pawn in a war between Man and Monster, between family and friends and the dragons she has despised her whole life. Chilling, epic, and wholly original, this debut novel imagines a North America where dragons are kept on reservations, where strict blackout rules are obeyed no matter the cost, where the highly weaponized military operates in secret, and where a gruesome television show called Kissing Dragons unites the population. Joshua McCune's debut novel offers action, adventure, fantasy, and a reimagining of popular dragon lore. "The story packs significant punch."—Publishers Weekly

Talker 25, by Joshua McCune

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—In this debut novel, McCune creates a dystopian fantasy world in which humans are pitted against dragons. The United States military declares the winged creatures their number one enemy, and protagonist Mel finds herself kidnapped by the pro-dragon insurgency group to whichher deceased mother (who was killed by a dragon) once belonged. After spending time bonding with dragons, the military recaptures her, and Mel is kept with other teens to be "reconditioned": they must communicate telepathically with dragons in order to lure them to their deaths. At this point in the story, the tone shifts from middle school-appropriate to teen. Alcohol and sex are awkwardly interjected and seem unnecessary to the plot or character development. An amusing website based upon a dragon reality show portrayed in the book shows promise, yet it ultimately falls short of its potential. This is a fast-paced adventure, but the abrupt ending feels rushed. The book's weakness lies in the heavy borrowing from popular trilogies. The emphasis on "insurgents" is reminiscent of Veronica Roth's books, as is the mind control and monitoring of thoughts and dreams. Like Suzanne Collins's Katniss, Mel undergoes makeup and costume changes for the cameras (she portrays herself in televised reenactments of dragon battles). Although lacking in originality, Talker 25 may have the familiarity and action-oriented storytelling that ravenous fans of the genre will enjoy.—Laura Falli, McNeil High School, Austin, TX

From Booklist Melissa Callahan is Talker 25, a name given her when she is imprisoned for being an Insurgent, a person who has joined the dragons fighting against the U.S. military. Hidden in a frozen Antarctica outpost, Melissa is forced to communicate with the dragons, trying to lure them into dangerous traps. Once captured, Melissa and the other Talkers must torture the gigantic animals while they themselves are enduring equally perverse tortures that force them into submission. Debut author McCune has created a unique world that readers will find both horrifying and compelling: good and evil are relative, and right and wrong are compromised. Are the dragons evil for killing humans to protect their children? Are Melissa and her fellow Talkers evil for participating in the torture of these animals to protect their families and themselves from similar tortures? Has the military manipulated dragons to frighten and control the citizenry? Be prepared—Talker 25 will stretch your ability to absorb and endure Melissa’s disturbingly graphic existence as she defies the soldiers’ determination to break her will and force her to turn against the dragons that trust her. Grades 9-12. --Frances Bradburn

Review “Absolutely gripping and absolutely horrifying, Talker 25 is a sort of fantasy Gulag Archipelago, an account of the stripping down of humanity under extreme duress. That McCune manages an upbeat ending is a surprising feat, but readers will be left shaken by what came before.” (The Horn Book)

With themes dealing with the ethics of war and safety versus tolerance, there is a whole lot to think about in addition to the fast-paced action. And fantasy dragon lore set in realistic modern times? Yes, please! I must admit that, as an animal lover and general softie, some parts of it were pretty hard for me to take, but they really drove home the themes and made me sympathize even more with the main characters, who are put in extremely tough situations. I couldn't put it down, I can't stop thinking about it, and I definitely can't wait for the sequel!

After years of battles and millions dead, there has recently been a fragile peace between the humans and the different-colored dragons. Reds and Blues mostly stay in packs, but Greens are the ones you have to watch out for, as they will kill anything in sight. Melissa knows this all too well as her mother died from a Green when Melissa was very young. Ever since then, Melissa, her brother, and her father have lived on a military base surrounding a giant pit filled with dragons who seem to be up to something. If you ask, most people would say that all the dragons should be wiped out as they are simply too dangerous. But there is a small band of people, insurgents, who sympathize with the dragons --- and rumor has it they can also talk to them. Melissa’s mother was an insurgent and could talk to dragons, unbeknown to most people, and Melissa discovers on a random night as her and her friends go ‘dragon hunting’ that she can also talk to dragons. Armed with this special skill, Melissa’s life changes forever --- but not in the ways you would expect.First, a planned attack against the dragons ends up leveling the military base, and Melissa finds herself in the company of the insurgents and her mother’s old friends. There Melissa discovers what the dragons have been up to: they are breeding. Their offspring, silver dragons, possess freezing ability, quite the opposite of what you would expect from fire-breathing dragons. The dragons will do anything to protect their young and Melissa realizes that, just like her mother, she is going to have to choose a side.At this point in the novel, I thought for sure I had figured out what TALKER 25 was going to be all about. Melissa would choose to fight with the dragons, there would probably be a couple of spectacular battles, she would probably betray her family’s trust, and the story would end with a cliffhanger that would set the story up for the next book in the series. Instead, TALKER 25 goes somewhere completely different. In a unique twist, Melissa ends up being captured and shuttled off to a secret military base in Antarctica where the military uses children who can talk to dragons to eliminate them one by one. Melissa is slowly reconditioned and becomes Talker 25, and she must use her unique power to hunt the creatures she grew to love. After reading countless fantasy books about dragons, I thought for sure it would be amazing if they existed in real life. TALKER 25 takes this premise and provides a harrowing realistic worldview that has made me think twice. I never really stopped and considered what harm powerful dragons could inflict upon humanity nor to what lengths those in power would go to prevent such harm. There is also a very astute social commentary about reality television in TALKER 25 that I will just let you discover on your own. You don’t want to miss it or this refreshing take on the mysterious --- and deadly --- dragon.Reviewed by Benjamin Boche.

I've been reading mostly romance novels for as long as I can remember. But, what can I say? Romance gets old. So, I've been dipping my toes into other pools of fantasy and came upon Talker 25. Being that I'm a sucker for a good cover, I thought I'd give it a shot. However, if the inside doesn't match the outside, I'm no longer hesitant to quit half way through a book. I don't believe in wasting time on poor writing and bad characters when there are so many other books to read.Well, after that lengthy intro, I'll just say I am hooked. As others have said, there was violence and darkness. I sometimes wanted to close my eyes, but mostly there were characters I really grew to care about. The writing style was excellent. The dragons were awesome. I want to know what happens next!
