YA Christian romance By Mrs. G Jessica is coping with the death of both parents by self-medicating with prescription meds until she meets Caleb, the pastor's son, who helps her overcome her grief. But when wild parties and bizarre love triangles scramble up her life even more, she struggles to know who to trust. The character of Jessica is very well-drawn and believable as a teen. Author Eliza Tilton has done a good job of capturing the girl's voice and mood, and for the most part, I could cheer for her because I could see where she was coming from. Caleb, the primary love interest, was perfect. Actually, almost too perfect. His flaws were all in the past. That said, teen girls will fall in love with him, and I certainly agree that he's the kind of boy they should be looking for. Let's get a few million more of him out there.Since the genre seems to be billed as YA Christian romance, I found myself in a quandary about the balancing act that requires. I think Tilton nailed the YA end of things. Exactly right. The romance was sweet, and they never went past heavy kissing. That said, there was a LOT of kissing. That works for the romance part, but it's where I wondered about the Christian element. Some Christian teens may come away thinking it's okay to make out regularly and passionately because Caleb was able to keep his pants on, but like I said, Caleb was pretty much perfect. Overall, although Jessica was sympathetic, she wasn't really much of a role model of a changing heart. Her faith grows by the end of the story, but I think there could have been more done with that thread of the story by tying the good changes she makes to that growing faith instead of crediting the people around her. Perhaps Tilton was trying not to be heavy-handed or preachy (which she wasn't at all), but it made the message of forgiveness a bit more generic than its category typically features.I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I only recently became acquainted with the author via her social media outlets, so there is no prior relationship to add bias to my opinion.

By purpleshadowhunter Wow,I did not expect that twisted ending. The first few chapters were kinda slow but when it picked up you were on an emotional roller coaster as these teen learn to deal with past hurts that have left them scarred and present life that continuously challenges them to either trust or give up. Their reactions and situations are real life issues that many teens go through(except for the twisted ending). It reminded me of some of the struggles my daughter dealt with in high school and also reminded it me a bit of the movie To Save a Life. With the hurt of losing her parent,Jess's life is slowly swirling out of control yet she finds herself rooted and gains some stability in the arms of Caleb.Jess slowly finds her way back to God after hating him after she lost her mom. However, trusting God when your world seams to be crashing around you over and over is hard,But Caleb has a past that keeps him a little guarded and one night when things get heated faith in each other gets tested. Can they finally learn to fully trust each other or will they let their insecurity tear them apart? Will meeting Caleb be what brings Jess back to trusting God or push her to away from God forever?

The characters were complex enough to draw me into their lives and make me truly care about what happened to them. Having recently lost my mother myself, I could really relate to the turmoil that Jessica was feeling. Life is hard and I think, if we are honest, we would all admit that we have struggled with being angry with God at some point. Jessica's story offers glimpses of where the road can lead if you wander too far off course, without being too graphic for even an early teen audience, while fulling exploring her journey to find and love.
