Perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare's The Infernal Devices series, this is the explosive conclusion to Susan Dennard's trilogy, which started with Something Strange and Deadly and continued with A Darkness Strange and Lovely. With supernatural forces, epic romance, and a mysterious Egyptian city, Eleanor and her team are set for an adventure they will never forget.

It has been a tumultuous time for Eleanor Fitt since life as she knew it in Philadelphia came abruptly to an end. Although the Spirit-Hunters—Joseph, Jie, and Daniel—have helped her survive, Eleanor has lost just about everything.

And now, Jie is missing—taken by the evil necromancer Marcus. Eleanor is determined not only to get her back but to finally end this nightmare. To do so, she must navigate the hot desert streets of nineteenth-century Egypt amid the rising Dead, her unresolved feelings for Daniel, and her volatile relationships with Joseph and Oliver, her demon. And it won't be easy. Because Allison, her friend from Philadelphia, has tagged along, becoming strangely entangled in Eleanor's mission.

It will take all of Eleanor's powers of black magic, and all of Daniel's and Joseph's trust, to succeed. But there will be a price.

Strange and Ever After (Something Strange and Deadly Trilogy), by Susan Dennard

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—This final installment concludes the gothic zombie tale set in 19th-century Paris. Eleanor Fitt and the three eclectic Demon Hunters were able to stop the rising tide of "les Morts," the reanimated dead who were overwhelming the city, by killing a demon named Madame Marineaus. However, their nemesis Marcus escaped in the process and kidnapped one of their own. Strange and Ever After chronicles the Demon Hunters' disaster-riddled pursuit of Marcus from Paris to Egypt. He always seems one step ahead of them as they all try to be the first to uncover the secret behind The Black Pullet, a legendary bird said to hold the secrets to immense power, endless wealth, and immortality. While some of the skirmishes with zombies do seem redundant, the hunt for the mystical bird and the rich Egyptian backdrop inject enough thrills to make this an exciting, quick read. The author adds dimension to and deepens the characterization of several of the protagonists while exploring the nature of the soul and the human capacity for change. Some readers may be disappointed by the unexpected twist in the romantic subplot, but overall, fans of the series will enjoy it immensely.—Sunnie Lovelace, Wallingford Public Library, CT

She's out for revenge to and right all wrongs with whatever it takes, even growing her newfound scary powers that threaten her very existence because every usage of black magic causes her to lose a bit of herself. She travels to beautiful and enchanting Egypt in search of the infamous Old Man to find the answers she has so desperately seeked since book one. This all leads to the final showdown...the question is whether Eleanor can discover how to defeat Marcus before it's too late. The world-building, as always, is phenomenal. One thing I have come to expect from Dennard is great detail when it comes to the exotic locations she chooses to set her stories in. When I found out that book three was in Egypt, I was doubly excited to read it because, hello, Egypt! Despite the final showdown and everyone trying not to get killed, I couldn't stop freaking out about the fact that I got to take a reader's vacation to Egypt thanks to Dennard's detailing skills. The characterization in this book was very strong as well. Though deeply flawed, Eleanor continues to be a very strong heroine that is easy to respect. She is very independent--something super rare for her time--and she genuinely tries to protect everyone she cares about. I've never stopped loving her and it's bittersweet to see that her story (meaning this trilogy) has come to an end. And then, of course, there's Daniel. Pure of heart and super intelligent, I feel as if he is the only constant thing in Eleanor's life whether she likes it or not. He will never let her struggle by herself and will always be there to help her, no matter what the cost. I think this is one of the many reasons as to why he is among my favorite love interests. Daniel is the epitome of swoons, I'm telling you. This book has even more action than any of the other books combined. The final battle can only be described as epic. Like any duel, there was triumphs and setbacks, angst and success. Nothing is ever simple or easy, but I think that Dennard highlighted every character's sacrifice to rid this world of evil so well. While the ending will be very polarizing, I understand why Dennard chose to end this series the way she did. It is not what I wanted and I'm disappointed in the ending in that sense, but overall this was a very satisfying conclusion to an amazing series and perhaps the only zombie series I will ever willingly read. Anything Dennard delivers us will be amazing. She's truly one of my favorite authors.According to Dennard, I was the very first person to e-mail her and tell her that I completed this book. She told me of the emotional trauma writing this conclusion wrought on her. Ending a series is never easy, and to see that she struggled so much with making things perfect the way she felt the story played out was amazing. It shows how much this series means to her and how much she hopes we love it. I will continue to recommend this series to anyone who wants to read it, and if you haven't already started it yet now is the time to do so because book three is officially out! Totally worth the binge read, I promise! Just don't forget the tissues.

While I didn’t love the bittersweet ending, I did enjoy the story overall and would highly recommend this to any YA paranormal fans!Opening Sentence: I was not supposed to be here. The Review:Eleanor Fitts has lost everything; her brother, her mother, and now her best friend, Jie. The person responsible for all her loss is the evil necromancer, Marcus. Now Eleanor is out for revenge and she will stop at nothing until Marcus pays for all that he has done. She will have to travel to the beautiful country of Egypt and search for the Old Man in the pyramid to find the answers she need to defeat her enemy. The Spirit Hunters always seem to be one step behind, but will they come out ahead in the final showdown?Eleanor’s own powers continue to grow, but the more she deals in black magic the closer she is to losing herself. She will need her magic if she expects to beat Marcus, but what will the price be? The epic final battle is coming and everyone is going to feel the effects of the outcome — weather good or bad! Will Eleanor be able to protect everyone she loves and finally get to live her strange and ever after?Eleanor has many flaws but I still completely adore her. With her independent spirit, sweet demeanor, and big heart what’s not to love. She doesn’t always make the best decisions but she always tries to protect the people she cares about. I was so glad she opened up more to everyone and actually let people in. It was frustrating at times to see her so closed off in previous books, but luckily that wasn’t the case in this one. She is constantly growing as a character and it is impossible not to love her. I also like that she is smart and she uses her brain to get her out of tough situations. She knows how to take care of herself, but she is also willing to accept help from others which shows her more humble side.Daniel is just as charming as ever. He is a consistent person that you can always rely on to be there for you. Out of all the characters he is the one that has the purest heart and I find that very sexy. Of course he also has great looks, an adorable accent, and a brilliant mind that makes him irresistible. His relationship with Eleanor continues to develop and I loved them together. They are so perfect for each other and watching them fall in love was beautiful. Daniel was a swoon worthy love interest that I will never forget.Strange and Ever After is an action packed story filled with passion, heartache, revenge, and adventure. This picks up right after the events that took place in the previous book and there is never a dull moment. It is very fast paced and it kept me interested the whole way through. The romance was beautifully done and all the characters were amazing. I was so glad I got to read all their stories. I’m going to be honest, I didn’t love the ending. I’m not going to go into any detail because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I was a little disappointed. I don’t think that everyone will feel this way, but that’s the beauty of having an opinion. I thought that Dennard did a wonderful job wrapping up all the loose ends and I do think that the ending worked for the series, it just wasn’t what I was hoping for. Did I still enjoy the book? Absolutely! Would I still recommend this series? Without a doubt! Whenever an author ends a series they are never going to please everyone, but I still think that this was very well written and I truly enjoyed reading this wonderful story.Notable Scene:The hatch in the cargo hold was open, and Daniel stood on the edge. He glanced back only once, and his eyes met mine.“No!” I launched myself after him. But I was too slow, too far away.Daniel jumped. And that was when I realized—in a half-formed thought that flitted through my mind before I’d gone two steps: he had no parachute. And I could not let him die.I skittered back, yanked a parachute off the hook, and then sprinted. Each kick of my legs brought me closer to the open hatch—and just before I reached it, I swung the parachute on.Then I jumped too.FTC Advisory: Harper Teen provided me with a copy of Strange and Ever After. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Over the course of a series they some how become a part of you, ingrained into your very soul. They become dear friends and you worry for them, you fear for them and you love them. No matter how much they may have aggravated you in the past or even hurt you, you still want what is best for them. You still want them to have that happily ever after we all seek in the end and our only hope, our only wish, is for them to get it.Eleanor, Daniel, Jie, Joseph and even Oliver have become these people to me, these friends that I care so very much for. These characters that I want to be happy, to get their happily ever after.I have loved Eleanor from the very beginning, what is not to love about a strong heroine set in a time when woman were suppose to be meek and subservient, not feisty and headstrong? And even though she has taken some steps back in her growth, she ultimately has grown a lot. Has come into her own not only in her powers but in herself as well. In her relationship with others and in her place in her world.Dennard managed to create a story so complex and so richly and beautifully detailed that it was hard not to be enthralled by it. Not to soak up all that she gave us and still, with our stomachs bursting, not want more. There was so much emotion in this story, way more than I had anticipated. Sadness, anger, joy, sorrow, brief moments of happiness. It all came down to this last fight for their lives. This last chance to finally defeat Marcus and make the world right again. It all came down to this.I knew there would be casualties and I knew there might even be deaths and I just knew this would be a hard read but I don't think I was mentally prepared for the up and downs my emotions would take as I went on this roller coaster of a ride that Dennard had created for me, for us, in this last installment. All I can say is...wow. Just wow. It was every bit as magical as the last books and ever bit as frustrating and as heartbreaking. I truly felt sad at times and even teary eyed at others. This was a wonderful conclusion to the series if not a sad one. It was an ending full of hopes and dreams and promises and really, that is all that I could have asked for. So maybe not the ending I was expecting or even hoping for, but a good solid one nonetheless.
