Her parents are developers for a highly advanced virtual reality called the MEEP, and Nixy, an unofficial beta tester, uses her inside knowledge to make money from clients who hire her to "drag their wayward sons and daughters back from the MEEP." When she is contacted by the creator of the virtual reality, she is thrilled at the lucrative opportunity. But the job is especially hard, and when she finally reaches her employer's son Wyn, she discovers that he is trapped and that her job is actually a rescue mission. The romance that develops between the two and Nixy's damsel-in-distress phase in the middle of the book unfortunately detract from her otherwise strongly defined character. Nixy's personality is aptly summed up by her acquaintance Cooper when he calls her a "stinking, money-grabbing traitor." The teen defends her line of work by pointing at that "it beats bagging groceries or washing cars." However, Nixy's narrative voice—made likable and distinctive by quirks such as swearing in Norwegian because "it tends to get us in less trouble than the English F-word"—is a strong point that remains constant throughout the book. Despite differences in setting, this work shares some attributes with some popular dystopian titles, such as fast-paced action scenes, a strong female protagonist, and mistrust toward those in power. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By Sharing Inspired Kreations Overall, I wasn’t a fan of this book. I ended up just skimming through most of the second half. I found everything to be a bit weak.The world building is weak and the time setting is ambiguous. Everything seems like current day, except for this crazy virtual reality game. So, it’s unclear how far in the future it is since, seemingly, nothing else has advanced. Which doesn’t make much sense.While the story sounded interesting, it wasn’t well executed at all. The synopsis makes it sound action-packed, which it is at times, but not much. And the action scenes didn’t grab me and have me fearing for the character at all. I mean, it’s a virtual world. It’s not like her real life was ever in danger. So, the dangerous aspects didn’t hold much meaning to me. The story as a whole bored me. I just couldn’t get into it. The writing quality wasn’t all that great either.I didn’t get the romance and the characters were under developed. However, Nixy is a good main character. She is tough and conquers challenges throughout the book. I still wasn’t able to fully hop on board with her character or her story, but that doesn’t mean you won’t!All in all, I was very disappointed with this book.

But as soon as I finished it, it's exactly how I summed this book up.It felt like a vacation from a lot of other books I've been reading lately.The Leveller didn't have a deep plot line, complex characters, or ridiculous twists that keep you guessing the entire way through. It's not so science fiction-y that you need time to digest what you're reading before you continue, and it definitely seems somewhat juvenile in some places. I'll admit it, I normally hate that kind of thing, and typically lose count of the amount of eye rolls I do before tossing the book aside and starting a new one, but man, this was just...fantastic.It starts off with Nixy Bauer, who has a job bringing kids back from the virtual reality world, the MEEP, when they have spent more than their allotted time there and don't come back on their own. She is paid for her services, and her motto is "Nixy Bauer, home in an hour" (like I said, it's juvenile in some spots, but bear with it, because the book is amazing). Her friends, Moose and Chang, spend their time creating hacks that allow kids to do things in this virtual reality world that aren't authorized - such as staying in the world longer than the four hours they're permitted. So she goes into the various worlds, brings the kids out, and gets paid. It's a pretty cool job, if you ask me.Her parents both work for the MEEP creator, and when his son goes missing inside the virtual reality world, and none of the people he has hired to get him back out are able to help, he comes to Nixy. While Nixy isn't too keen on the idea at first, she eventually agrees to it, and she goes into the virtual reality world of Wyn to try and bring him back out.Only after making it past all the rooms that hold terrifying things (think sharks, ghosts, etc.), and the maze that will lead her to Wyn, she finds herself trapped in this world as well, and the two of them have to work together to get out.Of course you'll find the typical romance (I mean, it's expected, and does not disappoint. At least there's no love triangle, so there's that), but it's actually kind of cute...the kind of cute that makes you go "Aweeee" and keep reading to see what happens between them.The characters aren't exactly complex, but they're pretty well developed in my opinion, and I couldn't help but smile at some of the things that Nixy says and does. It's just cute. The way she swears in other languages instead of English is kind of amusing.It seems like this book is going to be the first book in a new series, so I'm really excited to see where the author goes with this. The ending wasn't exactly a cliffhanger, so I'm wondering if the same characters will be in the next one, and it will continue the story where it left off, or if it will be a completely different story than Nixy and Wyn. I'm hoping it continues the story. In either case, I'll be reading this book at least a few more times!Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Not as action-packed as I was hoping for By Vi the Vi3tBabe I always get intrigued by a “virtual world” setting and I truly believe this might be in our future someday. A lot of the games I like to play focus on world-building, kind of like Sim City. I thought it was pretty cool that Durango had a character like Nixy who made a living out of bringing kids back out from the MEEP into the real world. I was also very intrigued with the conspiracy theory and how that would play out. Unfortunately, things weren’t as fleshed out or as dangerous as I was hoping and the book as a whole fell kind of flat for me. I could quickly and easily tell who was behind Wyn’s kidnapping and it wasn’t all that diabolical, to be honest.My favorite part of the book was when Nixy went into Wyn’s world. She had to face quite a few obstacles before she could get there and I loved it. It was unpredictable, action-packed, and engaging. You get ferocious animals, creepy creatures, and so much more. It was kind of what I was expecting more of the book would be about. For a book centered around virtual reality, I wanted more of that creativeness and limitless imagination that I associate with this theme. Anyways, I loved how each obstacle tested Nixy in various ways and I loved seeing how she handled it all, physically and mentally. She made me laugh a lot throughout the book, but this was where I liked her the most.I also really liked Nixy’s relationship with her parents. They’re actually part of the coding team who run the MEEP, her dad helping to create the worlds itself and her mom working on the verbal coding that the characters actually say. It was pretty cool. They were definitely a fun and cute little family and even though we don’t get much of them, I really liked what I did get.I could’ve done without the romance and I honestly didn’t care for it at all. It was kind of like they were working towards a good friendship with a mutual understanding and then suddenly it jumped right into the romance between Nixy and Wyn. There are setbacks which stop the relationship from progressing and giving it more of a chance to develop, but by then I was already turned off from it so it felt more like an aside to me. It didn’t add anything to the overall storyline and just felt like it was placed there because “every book needs a romance of sorts”.So yes, The Leveller isn’t as action-packed or exciting as I hoped it would be. There were definitely good parts and I liked Nixy overall. She’s pretty snarky and confident, and I liked being in her head. But, the story kind of fizzles out and it ends up being kind of boring towards the end.
