About the Author Kate Gardner, MS, RD is a registered dietitian and culinary nutritionist specializing in whole foods for optimal health and wellness. She received her master's degree in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology—and is currently a doctoral candidate in Food and Nutrition Policy—at Columbia University's Teacher's College. Gardner counsels patients in sports nutrition, weight management, medical nutrition therapy, and diet modification from her offices in Darien, CT, and White Plains, NY. In addition to counseling, she has been a featured expert in print media, creates recipes for various organizations, and has hosted hundreds of cooking demonstrations.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Easy to prepare, tasty recipes. And not just for diabetics. By Josh I'm not sure why this is mainly marketed as a diabetes cookbook - It would be better titled "Delicious, Easy Recipes" with a sub-heading of "Oh, and it's also diabetic friendly"!I don't have diabetes, but bought the book after seeing it on my grandmother's counter, and getting her recommendation on how good the recipes were. I bought the book because my grandmother wouldn't let me take her's, but she's given me other cook books in the past - seemed like a good sign.Recipes are easy to understand, and there are plenty that don't require that many ingredients (Pg 71 - Wasabi Salmon Burger, 7 ingredients Pg 120, Roasted Trout w/ Fennel & Sage - 5 ingredients). Recipes that are more involved (pg 160, Mini Chocolate Orange Cakes w/ Ancho Chilies or Pg 122 Roasted Poblano Peppers w/ BBQ Pulled Chicken) are still fairly painless to prepare, and the reward is definitely there in the taste. One downside is that some of the spices/ingredients from internationally-themed recipes may be hard to find in all groceries. Plan accordingly, or you'll find yourself without some madras powder or dried pasilla chilies.As someone who has been cutting down on meat in favor of eating more pescetarian-friendly meals, this cook book has been a great resource for me. I'm not sure about the reviewer who mentioned the lack of recipes that could be considered Kosher - There are plenty of vegetarian and fish recipes in the book, as well as soups that can become vegetarian by substituting vegetable broth for chicken broth.

In order to be worthwhile, recipes need to be workable without too much fuss, be explained well, use ingredients that I can get without much trouble, be tasty, and fit in with the healthy-eating choices that so many of us, non-diabetics and diabetics alike, have made. Check, check, check check, and check. The beautiful photography not only helps to whet your appetite, but it also gives a sense of what a dish could look like when served.Overall, a wonderful cookbook for anybody, but also a great gift. Really, what could be a better present than the gift of health?

I'm definitely confused by the reviews saying that there weren't enough pictures (almost every recipe has an accompanying photo) and that the recipes weren't mouthwatering (they totally are!). To each his own, but I feel like those reviews must be for another book...This cookbook is honestly amazing for diabetics and the people who love them (and are forced to eat with them). We're at a point in North America where diabetes, and the prevention of it, really affects us all. When diagnosed with Type I or Type II diabetes, immediately, the word "restrictions" comes to mind... Ms. Gardner's book completely defies that preconceived notion - instead of splenda and cardboard, her recipes are for pork tenderloin and creamy asparagus, not to mention an entire section devoted to desserts! The New Diabetes Cookbook is a great way to abolish the fear that diabetes is a culinary death sentence, as the book teaches you that it's possible to be a conscious eater with a healthy dose of indulgence. I also appreciate Ms. Gardner's emphasis on using whole and seasonal ingredients, and the book is loaded with helpful and easy to digest (pun intended) notes on the nutritional virtues of different foods and unique aspects of the recipes. It's all information that you will take with you beyond the cookbook to confidently freestyle on your own diabetic-friendly creations!I recommend The New Diabetes Cookbook without reservation, especially as the holidays approach - it is the perfect way to wow your family and friends with delicious season's eatings without any of the requisite guilt!
