By Jared Carson's "Rain" suffers from the tragedy of doing certain things very well but not doing nearly enough of it. The title itself evokes a certain expectation of thematic symbolism, and indeed Carson delivers a certain degree of thematic storytelling mostly involving the titular subject: rain. Eye color as well is used as an underlying descriptor connecting different scenes. However, symbolism is rarely explored in either of these circumstances. Rain is used entirely to represent the main character's desire for a certain calm, reflective state, while both rain and eye color only appear three to four times throughout the story. Perhaps that is a reasonable number of times given the length of the story as a whole, but ultimately the author did not use setting to his advantage for the majority of the novella.Ultimately, the story focuses on people and how they interact with one another, as all good stories do. However, Carson attempts to create a two-branched story centered around the singular main character. This may have worked well in a longer piece, but in only thirty-nine pages it causes both stories to suffer, and in the end the two stories have next to no effect on one another. I will say this, however: "Rain" has one of the best depictions of a same sex relationship I have ever read, at least thematically speaking. The relationship is not the focus of the story, and the novella does not require sex or intrigue to move the plot forward. It is just a thing that happens; it is part of who the characters are. That, I think, is the best characterization Carson has to offer in this story. The decision to paint it as simply an aspect of the actors without falling into stereotypes or overused tropes is genius and on its own warrants the purchase of this story. It is a shame, then, that this decision to focus on the characters as people rather than sex objects or stereotypes leaves so much to be desired. The main character, unfortunately, might be characterized by some as a classic Gary Stu. He is attractive, popular, and has no explicit flaws character wise. He's just a loner who ends up falling in love and bad things happen to him. Now, this is not to say that Gary Stus are necessarily a bad thing. Coming of age stories, or bildungsroman, often benefit from having main characters like this as it allows young people to relate better to them. However, it does mean that the main character has little to offer that might differentiate him from other main characters who participate in this trope. As much as I like the depiction of the main character's relationship, its development as well leaves much to be desired. Everything happens far too fast for it to leave much of an impression on the reader, and it is so predictable when it happens there is little point in it. Honestly, both branches of the story develop much too quickly in the middle of the book, and both warranted thirty-nine page sections of their own for pure story. Again, I just have reiterate that this is a really good story. It begins with an interesting situation in an idyllic version of my native Western Washington, and contributes to the normalcy of the romantic relationship. It ends with a poignant "what if?" and creates a realistic situation. By all rights, it is a finished story. It simply doesn't devote enough time to the stories it wants to tell. They're great ideas starving for more attention, like a plant which has filled up its pot or a delicious candy bar squished into a bite size wrapper. Its consumption creates an insatiable desire for more, but that desire alone is worth trying at least once.
