From USA TODAY Bestselling author Michael James Ploof. For ten long years young Dirk Blackthorn has followed his drunken father from one city to another, always having to cheat and steal for his next meal, and never knowing what the future might hold. A magician turned con artist, Dirk’s father Thad has taught him everything he knows. After being driven out of just about every southern city in Agora, they have come to Kell-Torey in search of a new beginning. With winter on its way, and all but a rusty coin spent on his father’s drinking, Dirk must make full use of his skills if they are to survive the harsh northern cold. As Thad descends deeper into his drunken delirium, Dirk becomes determined to make a name for himself in the city’s criminal underworld. Featuring two of Legends of Agora’s most beloved characters, Blackthorn Rising is a fast-paced coming of age tale wrought with sword and sorcery, it is a story of failure and triumph, and a testament to the unrelenting spirit of defiance and adventure within us all. FROM THE EDITOR Blackthorn Rising is a book that sticks with you. Michael Ploof’s stimulating prose and evocative cast of characters are incapable of boring you on any single page. The plot is sharp, charged with dark wit, adventure, intrigue, and emotion. Enjoy Dirk Blackthorn’s bumbling journey to manhood as he rises to become a great thief, and an even greater man. I loved every minute of editing this tale, and I know you’ll love every minute of reading it. --Holly M. Kothe, espressoeditor.com

Feels like an Unfinished Work By Miz Bejabbers I started this book, novella, not sure how to categorize it, because the review I read promised to explain how Dirk Blackthorn and Krentz met. I'm not sure it lived up to it because it left the reader hanging. I know I didn't pay much for this ebook, but I certainly got what I paid for. I was reading along and enjoying every word, when, wham! it ended at about 80%. The last 20% promos two of his other books. Blackthorn Rising: Legends of Agora does detail the separate early lives of Dirk and the Black Elf, Krentz, but there is no satisfaction in how they got together and entwined their lives. I guess I'm being a spoiler, but this book deserves to have a spoiler. So reader beware! If you are really curious about Dirk and Krentz, let the author know that he needs to finish this work. Maybe that is why it is called "Legends of Agora," but if this is a serial, it should make that clear.I'm disappointed because I have read all the series of Whill of Agora and I know that the author has a fantastic mind. However, once this short book was released unfinished, he seems to be jumping from one project to another without much thought. Is there more to come about Dirk and Krentz?

The main character was very appealing to me and I loved watching his development. Simply getting into his head was enjoyable as he set his goals and puzzled out how to achieve them. His attitude toward others and curiosity about school in the beginning was interesting, as was his history with his father. His relationship with his father was well done and had me feeling just as torn about him as the main character did. I'd be mad one second, then feel bad the next. But then when Dirk went out to "work" I found myself forgetting about that and getting enveloped in the characters day-to-day journey, only to feel the hesitance of coming home at the end of the day and wondering what exactly you were coming home to. All that amid Dirk's occasional blunders and even his (it seemed cool at the time) nickname made him a very human character to me. The ending felt a bit rushed but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed it and am eager to read more about Dirk.I'm relatively new to Ploof's writing, but I've read the Windwalker Archives (books 1 & 2) and I became similarity engrossed in them. So, if you enjoyed this book or this author then those books are highly recommended. I'll admit to not knowing exactly what order these and the Whill of Agora series should be read in, but I do hope there will be another book in this series. For now I will content myself by starting on the Whill of Agora series by the talented Mr. Ploof. I'm officially a fan!

I am now waiting for the next book. Then I found Blackthorn and read the story before the series. While reading this, I found the Talon series, before Blackthorn. I am finding it interesting and am following along okay. Still, I would recommend anyone to read them in order.I do like the whole series. Usually, most series runs out of interest after a few books. Several series that I started ended up getting boring. This one has kept me reading right along and into the night. If this your style of book, you will love the whole series, even if this book is not officially part of it.It is a good " Stand Alone " book.
