In this mystery set in 1968, Christi, a shy and awkward teenager, never expected to get sucked into helping her cousin, Lily, the "double-dare-you" daughter of the county jailer, try to solve the grizzliest murder the town of Roselyn, Mississippi, had ever seen. Then again, Christi had been entangled in her misadventures before. So a whirlwind week of spying, lying, crawling through tunnels and sneaking into the jail should have come as no surprise to Christi. Lily, a vivacious prankster, loves adventure. It's not hard to find when you live in a house connected to the jail. Christi, a city girl, is self-conscious and afraid of everything. Still, she's drawn to the excitement and adventure that Lily always seems to provide. Christi arrives for a visit in time to help her cousin discover what happened the night Lily observed a county deputy drop a pair of women's bloody shoes from a bag. After a chance meeting with the accused, they learn new information that sheds doubt on his guilt. Seeking justice, Lily sets a plan in motion that takes them on an adventure of risk and surprising twists. They not only discover unexpected truths about the case, but about themselves as well.

By BlaireSharpe Let it be known that this is not my preferred genre (YA), however, I read this book as part of my commitment to RRBC and all its members. York's book,"The Bloody Shoe Affair", has a great deal that I think will appeal to its intended audience: The two main characters, Lily and Christi, are aptly fleshed out in both their age-appropriate behavior and their differing personalities. This is where York shined. These two characters were believable and remained true to their nature throughout the book. York's young love romantic subplot was also well presented with a very believable story arc. The major plot, that of the mystery surrounding the bloody shoe, was a bit of a jerky ride. I felt it took too long to get into the meat of the plot (30% into the book!), then some very compelling and suspenseful sections interspersed with page-consuming dialogue that didn't seem to move the plot, or the subplot, forward. The plot grew in suspense, but then resolved in a forced and rushed manner. Throughout the book, I found myself wondering if the book would have been better served from a third person point of view. Christi, as narrator, forced the author to write-in some clunky dialogue in order to get the plot points presented. In doing so, she also lost the personality of her narrator.York clearly has a knack for understanding the youth mindset and creating realistic characters. She also understands the innocence and giddiness of young love. And, she can imagine a mystery plot line with varied characters and motivations. The difficulty was in trying to stir all these together into one believable story which takes place over the course of one short week.

A charming, sometimes spooky teen adventure By Tyler Bumpus “I’m sure that’s what I saw, and besides, they were standing right under the parking lot lamp. Those shoes were covered in dark red blood.”When gawky teen Christi visits her incorrigible out-of-town cousin Lily (whose home happens to be conjoined to the local lockup!), she’s drawn into a sinister small town mystery sparked by the appearance of bloodstained footwear. To say more would spoil the fun. The best compliment I can pay author Joy York is that she made me forget I’m a grown man whose tastes usually veer toward adult-oriented literary and speculative fiction. Reading THE BLOODY SHOE AFFAIR, I was a teenage girl on an adventure in summer of late 60s Mississippi. Go on, laugh. The adolescent cast is likable and true to life, the mystery is engaging, and the period southern setting is refreshing in the ever-crowded landscape of new YA literature.I appreciate York’s atypical pacing: the little diversions of character insecurity and infatuation, or the quirky fixations on cuisine and other cultural details of southern life. At first these may seem unusual asides for a murder mystery, but ultimately lend an air of authenticity to the narration. York never forgets that Christi and Lily are not hardened sleuths, but teenagers susceptible to all the distractions of adolescence. It’s a sweet, often amusing approach that pays off later, when the two young heroines are forced out of their comfort zones to confront a darker underbelly of the small town South.I’m not a fan of starred rating systems. They rarely pinpoint a book’s true value. I have given this book four out of five stars, accounting for occasional grammatical or formatting errors (I’m a stickler). But to make my position clear: I WHOLLY RECOMMEND IT to fans of mystery and YA. Pick it up for your child's book report…and then read it for yourself on a lazy Saturday. It’s a charming, funny coming-of-age adventure with a just dollop of uniquely Southern Gothic menace.
