Review

"Fuentes (Best Homemade Kids' Lunches on the Planet) follows up with more than 200 snack recipes that are alternatives to the "expensive, processed box" kind. Complemented by color photos, the work offers a strategy that involves planning, buying in bulk, and having a well-stocked pantry. She advocates making big batches, prepping ahead, and freezing for time management. "Laura's tips" and "kitchen notes" are scattered throughout, providing more advice. Snacks range from red, white, and blue parfait (strawberries, blueberries, yogurt, and granola) to veggie dipping jars (hummus on the bottom of jar with raw veggies) to peaches and cream bread. One chapter features "reimagined classics" such as fresh fruit toaster pastries and homemade golden fishes. Recipes are also included for smoothies and frozen treats. A feedback chart at the back can be photocopied to allow readers to keep track of which recipes the kids liked. VERDICT Stocked with good ideas, these recipes will give families (not just the kids!) nutritional snacking options." - Library Journal

Fun ideas but not healthy everyday snacks for the most part - too much white flour and sugar By Gen of North Coast Gardening So, as the mother of the toddler who is occasionally particular and really likes to snack, I was super excited to read this book and get some new ideas to get me out of a snacktime rut. Unfortunately, the claim on the front of the cover that says "more than 200 healthy homemade snacks" is a little misleading, at least when it comes to the healthy part. While there are a number of great healthy snack ideas in here, I would say the majority of the really innovative ideas were things that were incredibly sweet or contain chocolate, such as berry chocolatey pizza, party mix containing as much maple syrup as it does nuts, homemade caramel corn, s'mores popcorn, trail mix with chocolate and marshmallows and graham crackers, marshmallow cream fluff, marshmallow cream filled chocolate cupcakes, homemade mint thins made with crackers covered with melted chocolate chips and peppermint extract, homemade pop tarts made from pie dough, and a HUGE number of things made from white flour, which I consider an occasional "treat" food rather than an everyday food. While most of the recipes were indeed exciting snacks that kids would probably like, I have to say that I will probably cut out the 20 or so recipes that I liked (she has some very exciting dips for kids including a number of hummuses, "magic" banana cookies with only 3 ingredients, energy bites, 'Ninja Turtle" nuggets, baked zucchini bites, and some fun variations on deviled eggs which I have seen before but it's nice to have in one place) and won't keep the book.I guess I'm just a little annoyed when books cater to the lowest common denominator health and flavor wise. Can kids not enjoy complex flavors? Do they really need white flour-based, sugar-laden snacks? What about vegetables and healthy proteins? My guy is almost two and he eats a wide variety of foods - there are very few things in this book I'd consider healthy fare for anyone in my family much less the one member who is still growing and needs nutrient-dense foods more than anyone.

By Jennifer Kyles I have Laura Fuentes' first book (Best Homemade Kids' Lunches) and I think I may even like this one better! It's going to be stained, dog-eared, and probably missing the back cover pretty soon. That's how I know it's a 5-star book :-)I have a husband, a 23 year old boy, and 4 year old twin boys living at home. A lot of food passes through this house and having healthy snacks and/or snack-meals ready to go can be a challenge. How many Goldfish can a kid eat? (well, a lot, but the better question is how many *should* a kid eat!). I generally avoid boxed snacks, but get into snack ruts. It's 4pm. Want a cheese stick? How about your 8th banana for the day? I think there's like a tablespoon of oatmeal in the fridge leftover from breakfast two days ago. There's got to be a better way, right? It turns out there is!This book is absolutely packed with healthy snack recipes. Seriously, I wondered at first how anyone could write a 240-page cookbook just about snacks. But when I opened it I was gobsmacked with the number and variety of recipes! So far I've made:maple cinnamon roasted chick peas p132greek deviled eggs p150elvis shake p183Pizza poppers p159All of them were hits. One of the twins didn't like the deviled eggs, but I was like, "whatever dude, more for me!" I was really dubious about whether the chick peas would go over well with the little ones (I knew the big folks would like them), but they loved them! They asked for the Elvis shake as a smoothie breakfast two days in a row. The pizza poppers were super simple to make and the whole batch disappeared in about 10 minutes. Next time I'm going to make a triple batch so I can have a bunch in the freezer. My 23 year old knows that no Totino's Pizza Rolls shall cross my threshold, so he was pretty interested in the idea of the pizza poppers. The poppers are NOT like those. They are more of a savory muffin and are not supposed to be a homemade version of the Totino's. But big son admitted that having a much healthier option was a good idea. He really liked them and decided that they are indeed a pretty good substitute. Score! When the twins were tiny I was always like, "I'm never going to let those kids eat in the car!" Enter reality. Sometimes we're rushing from place to place so much that having packable snacks to eat on the go is an absolute sanity-saver. The chick peas and the pizza poppers will work great as on-the-go snacks and there are lots more in the book that will be car-worthy (i.e. not runny, not gooey, not sticky). Two more things and I'll let you get back to reading more reviews...The books is 8 chapters, each focusing on a category of snacks. The table of contents is color-coded and --this is so cool -- the top of the pages are tipped with the corresponding colors! It's easy to flip to the "baked bites" chapter when you know you're looking for the red-tipped pages!Last - there is a cool feedback chart in the back where you can track what you've made, whether/how much everyone liked it, and make notes. It's not just big empty pages. It is a chart that lists *Every Single Recipe In The Book*. Is that freaking genius or what?

I'm still trying to come around on this one, because she's so amazing. I was put off early on because a lot of the first chapter are recipes involving adding sugary ingredients to fruit. White chocolate chips into raspberries, drizzles, cakes, etc. I have absolutely no problem getting my kids to eat fruit and berries, and adding sugar to them, for me, defeats the purpose. I was really hoping for some healthier, wholesome, creative recipes like her first book. I did make the pizza bites today, and those turned out great. But not really any nutritional value. My 3 year old also loved the banana oat muffins. So I do hope that I'm wrong, and I hope that I am able to find some healthier options besides veggies and hummus-- but just to be honest I am a little disappointed.I also realize that this book does not claim to be a health book. And it is mostly creative twists on some of the packaged or fast food stuff you might normally buy. But these days, for my family, I am in search of anything help me nourish my kid's little bodies, and I'm just not convinced that this book will prove to be as useful as the other. But I look forward to putting more to the test, maybe using her recipes as a guide and adding my own, healthier ingredients... and I will hopefully be proven wrong.
