Caroline Bingley has had her heart set on Fitzwilliam Darcy since her coming out ball, but he is extremely difficult to bring up to the mark. Caroline has put her family's background in trade behind her and moved up — at least in her own mind — into the upper class. In her struggle to overcome her less than noble beginnings, Caroline has learned to be proud and arrogant and even proud of being arrogant. As Darcy proves more and more elusive, Caroline fears she may miss out on other opportunities for marriage. Two penniless aristocrats emerge as possible matches for her; however, her unwillingness to give up on Darcy gets in the way of such arrangements. All the while Caroline is tormented by a former childhood sweetheart, a man in trade, who makes it his job to never let her forget her humble beginnings. While her brother romances Jane Bennet and Darcy ends up with Elizabeth, Caroline faces one humiliation after another and finally is forced to wake up to the truth about herself

Ross Would you like to feel sympathy for Caroline Bingley, then read this story because that seems to be it's purpose. Although she struggles throughout the book, she does seem to experience a conversion of her familiar character. She recognizes that she is a tradesman's daughter in fine clothes and actually apologizes to Elizabeth for her previous rudeness. It is a decent read and an involved story which incredibly brings the reader to sympathy for Caroline.

I know I'll be going against the majority of reviews here, but this book was merely acceptable. When I saw that Outlaw had four and a half stars, I expected a real page turner, with snappy dialogue, great character development, and a good super powers/magic system. Instead, Origins is a run of the mill YA adventure suited more for the older teen crowd than full adults. The plot goes something like: Formerly nerdy boy gets powers. Boy begins to play sports. Girls start to like him. There's a bully. He has problems at home. He becomes a hero. There is precious little that's original. The writing, while acceptable, isn't exceptional. There are repetitive moments in the book - like the many detailed play by play football games that are described. There is some decent character development at times, like with Hannah, one of the MC's love interests, but many of the other characters are flat, almost caricatures. Also, there are a few somewhat odd... almost promotional plugs in the book that are discordant. For instance, neither the main character or any other major character is portrayed as all that religious, but, about halfway through the book, the MC goes to a church and discovers that his assistant coach is a deacon there. Pretty much immediately the assistant coach writes the MC a check, from the church, to help out with the MC's money problems at home. The MC then says/thinks, "Before I got into my car, I glanced at the check. It was for two thousand dollars. I drove home with shaking hands, crying, praying, and laughing." Little PSA type things like this were a bit discordant for me.So, I'll stick to my guns. I have no idea why so many people have rated this book so highly. It isn't horrible, but it also isn't great. Origins is just a run of the mill, quasi-religious, young adult super hero story.

Knowing it was geared towards young adults and knowing I'm in my upper 30s I was nervous it might not capture my attention. Not only did it capture my attention but I read it fast...then moved on to the next one quickly and finished that one too. I fell in love with the characters. If you are in high school or have ever been in high school you can TOTALLY relate with the main character Chase Jackson and the struggles he has to find himself and fit into the high school scene. You can't help but fall in love with him and his friends. I found myself carving out 10 minutes here and there in my day to read because it was addicting! My only critique (while still giving it 5 starts, mind you) is some editing misses but I am sure they will get worked out with the next edition. And honestly, I'm kind of bummed that there's only 1 more book in the series. Wish it would just keep going. Good work Mr. Janney! Well done on this series. I love to ready but really struggle to find time and in the span of about a month I've read the Outlaw and Infected. It takes a special kind of writing style and content to hold my attention like that!!!

Why Do Dukes Fall in Love? Every summer the cream of society gathers at the Dukeries, named for the ducal estates concentrated in one small corner of Nottinghamshire. While the entertainments include parties, balls, and a famous boat race, the ducal hosts and their guests find heartbreak, love and happy endings. Four heartwarming stories from four bestselling historical romance authors. MAY I HAVE THIS DUKE? by Grace Burrowes The trouble with Houseparties. . . Gerard Hammersley, Duke of Hardcastle, is dragooned by an old friend into attending a house party, though Hardcastle refuses to fall prey to the matchmakers who relish such gatherings. He recruits his nephew’s prim, prickly governess, Miss Ellen MacHugh, to preserve him from being compromised by the conniving debutantes, and offers in exchange to deflect the drunken viscounts who plague Ellen. . . . Is that they must end. Ellen agrees to Hardcastle’s scheme for two reasons. First, she’s been attracted to His Grace since the day she laid eyes on him, and knows that behind Hardcastle’s lack of charm lies a ferociously loyal and faithful heart. Second, she’s departing from Hardcastle’s household at the conclusion of the house party, and two weeks safeguarding His Grace’s bachelorhood is as much pleasure—and as much torment—as she can endure before she leaves him. DUCHESS OF SCANDAL by Miranda Neville Too Many Scandals After months of marriage, the Duke of Linton agreed to live apart from his wife. Thrown together due to a scheduling error, Linton finds Althea still has the power to make his heart race. Linton seems different from the critical, indifferent man Althea married. But though she burns for him as a lover, can she trust him to be the husband she needs? WAITING FOR A DUKE LIKE YOU by Shana Galen There’s no such thing as the perfect hero… Nathan Cauley, tenth Duke of Wyndover, is so handsome ladies swoon—literally swoon. His blond hair and blue eyes certainly draw attention at the Duke of Sedgemere’s house party, but Nathan doesn’t want a fawning young miss for his duchess. He stumbles upon a bedraggled woman sleeping under Sedgemere’s bridge, and his protective instincts stir. When he recognizes her as the princess he fell in love with eight years before, he’s determined to win not only her affections but her heart. Or is there? After revolutionaries massacre Princess Vivienne’s family, she and the head of her guard flee to England. Before they can reach London to beg asylum, assassins kill the last of her defenders. Vivienne is alone and on the run when the Duke of Wyndover comes to her rescue. She barely remembers meeting him years before, and isn’t comfortable with gentlemen who are more attractive than she is. Nathan is more than a pretty face, though, and when the assassins return, he might just prove to be the duke Vivienne has been waiting for. AN UNSUITABLE DUCHESS by Carolyn Jewel The Duke of Stoke Teversault has well earned his reputation for bloodless calculation. Indeed, recently widowed Georgina Lark has no idea he’s loved her since before her late husband swept her off her feet. Stoke Teversault means to keep it that way. The cold and forbidding duke and the blithe and open Georgina could not be less suited in any capacity. And yet, when Georgina and her sister arrive at his home, his ice-bound heart may melt away. Georgina Lark has never thought of thought of the Duke of Stoke Teversault as a man capable of inducing passion in anyone. He’s long disapproved of her, but she will be forever grateful to him for his assistance after her husband died. It’s been a year since she’s realized he’s not the man she thought. Can she find a way to convince him to open his heart to her?

Dancing in The Duke's Arms: A Regency Romance Anthology, by Grace Burrowes, Shana Galen, Miranda Neville, Carolyn Jewel

Review "A true collaboration. Kudos to the authors ... Loved, loved [Grace Burrowes'] two main characters and their passionate romance. And the ending brought tears to my eyes! Just perfect! ... Fans of Ms. Galen will love the elements of suspense and humor she has infused into this passionate and adventure filled story. Loved [Miranda Neville's] noble and reserved hero and his appealing Duchess. Enjoyed reading every word in this novella and the ending was awesome. Carolyn Jewel's An Unsuitable Duchess is a wonderful story which blends the opposites attract and second chance at romance themes. (Fresh Fiction)

About the Author Grace Burrowes started writing romances as an antidote to empty nest and soon found it an antidote to life in general. She is the sixth out of seven children, and grew up reading voraciously when she wasn't enjoying the company of her horse. Grace is a practicing child welfare attorney in western Maryland, and loves to hear from her readers. Shana Galen is the bestselling author of passionate Regency romps, including the RT Reviewers' Choice The Making of a Gentleman. Kirkus says of her books, "The road to happily-ever-after is intense, conflicted, suspenseful and fun," and RT Bookreviews calls her books "lighthearted yet poignant, humorous yet touching." She taught English at the middle and high school level off and on for eleven years. Most of those years were spent working in Houston's inner city. Now she writes full time. She's happily married and has a daughter who is most definitely a romance heroine in the making. Miranda Neville grew up in England, loving the books of Georgette Heyer and other Regency romances. Her historical romances include the Burgundy Club series, about Regency book collectors, and The Wild Quartet. She lives in Vermont with her daughter, her cat, and a ridiculously large collection of Christmas tree ornaments. Carolyn Jewel was born on a moonless night. That darkness was seared into her soul and she became an award-winning and USA Today bestselling author of historical and paranormal romance. She has a very dusty car and a Master's degree in English that proves useful at the oddest times. An avid fan of fine chocolate, finer heroines, Bollywood films, and heroism in all forms, she has two cats and two dogs. Also a son. One of the cats is his.

Less than mediocre except for the Miranda Neville story - 2.5 stars By Sandy Milan Honestly I forgot that I was less than impressed with the first bundle and just bought this book before thinking it through. The reviews were of course all glowing and I took a chance, after reading the sample. Unfortunately a few short pages after the sample ended, the story unravelled for me.+++Spoilers+++The setting is a house party where 4 Dukes attend because they all have an estate in close proximity to each other.May I have this Duke? The first story by Ms Burrowes starts off quite well (the sample) but quickly devolves into a modern historical where the h is quite happy to engage the H in a love affair but isn't at all prepared to marry him for very weak reasons. Although I have my ups and downs with this author, I usually compliment her on her writing style - I found this story lacking in all senses and it could have been written by anyone. Not her best at all. I also loathe her favourite plot where the h won't accept the H's proposal of marriage despite being very happy to be intimate with him (pregnancy worries aside).Waiting for a Duke like youI'm truly not a fan of this author - she is of the modern historical genre that I detest. The h is a princess of an obscure principality (that doesn't prize virginity - read "are happy to sleep around") on the run from assassins that killed off her whole family. The H is a 'pretty' duke that fell in love with her years before but she doesn't remember him because she doesn't go for men who are more attractive than her. I had a hard time liking this h and the fact that she was 'liberal' didn't endear her to me either. The H was the only reason for me to persevere to the end. Readers who are sticklers for stringency to the period will not enjoy characters addressing the Duke as 'Duke' and another secondary character as 'Duchess'. I'm not a stickler and I was really irritated.Duchess of ScandalThis was the book that I really didn't want to read because I'm not a fan of 'second chance' romances in general (across all genres). However this author won me over. Our H and h have been estranged for 5 years and end up on the same estate at the same time by accident. Both characters harbour disappointments from the early days of their marriage. I have no idea how the author managed to win me and the characters over in such a short story but she did. i have to say that this bundle is only worth reading because of this storyAn Unsuitable DuchessI forgot to put in a description about this book and have mixed feelings. The author is true to the period and her forms of address are correct and read so well. I liked the story build up to a point but then again the widow plot disguised as an excuse for lots of sex without commitment raised it's head. By this point in this bundle, I realised that the authors were pleasing their publisher as well as their general readers by including the usual steamy stuff that contemporary romances are made of but I was still disappointed. The H in this story makes an offer for the h to become his mistress even though her brother is one of his close friends and he respects him. The h doesn't agree to become his mistress but comes to his room that night as his lover. They proceed to have sex every night whilst the H has houseguests and all without any commitment on his part. I can never recover from the lack of respect the H shows the h by his suddenly deciding to marry her. For me he never valued her enough in the first place. This bundle is for you if you love the steamy stuff and don't care too much about accuracy in a historical romance. I sincerely hope that I remember that I haven't enjoyed these 2 books by these authors so far and don't make the mistake of buying another.

By Humarock Beachwalker Gerard Hammersley, the Duke of Hardcastle the hero of May I Have This Duke? is one of my favorite Grace Burrowes characters. At first glance, Hardcastle is a typical Duke; challenging, arrogant and managing. What makes him special? He has a soft place in his heart for his nephew and he is more than a little bit in like with Ellen MacHugh, his nephew's governess. The Duke is feeling pressure from his friends and relatives. His Grandmother is insisting that he find a suitable wife. Ellen has given her notice which has upset his routine and made him uneasy. And to make things worse, Hardcastle's best friend , the Duke of Sedgemere, has invited him, his nephew and Ellen MacHugh to a two -week house party. Ellen is asked to attend the house party as a guest and Hardcastle's reaction is fabulous--he requests or rather demands that Ellen and he pretend that they are interested in each other. Loved, loved these two main characters their passionate romance. And the ending of the story was fabulous--it brought tears to my eyes! Just perfect!I read author Shana Galen's Waiting For A Duke Like You in one afternoon. The unlikely romance between the handsome Nathan Cauley, the Duke of Wyndover and the indifferent Princess Vivienne held my attention. I loved that the two main characters are a different from most regency novels. Nathan is the beautiful, handsome Duke who longs for a duchess who will love him; not just his handsome face. Princess Vivienne is a fascinating character. She is a survivor and very politically astute and trusts no one. This fast paced opposites attracts story is extraordinary! Fans of Ms. Galen will love the elements of suspense and humor she has infused into this passionate and adventure filled story! Loved, loved the ending and the epilogue is marvelous!A scheduling error has created a problem for Bentinck Travers, the Duke Linton and Althea, his wife in Miranda Neville's Duchess of Scandal. The couple who have been separated for five years are forced to spend time together at the Duke's country estate. Althea and Bentinck's story appealed to me and drew me into the story immediately. I wondered if the couple could get past their past mistakes and misconceptions of each other and make their marriage whole. Loved the piano duet scene where Linton notices that his wife has matured and Althea silently reveals her true feelings for her reserved Duke. Another stand out scene was the cleverly written card game where Nigel, Nick, Linton and Althea play whist. Several of the characters true feelings and motivations were revealed in this scene. Loved the novel's noble and reserved hero and his appealing Duchess, the minor characters of Althea's brother Nick and Nigel Speck and all of the events leading up to the Dukeries Cup race. Enjoyed reading every word in this novella and the ending was awesome!Carolyn Jewel's An Unsuitable Duchess is a wonderful story which blends the opposites attract and second chance at romance themes. Stoke Teversault, the Duke of Teversault has a reputation for being shrewd and calculating. Stoke was attracted to vivacious Georgina "George' Lark several years ago. He hesitated and missed his chance as George married a friend. George , now widowed, and her sister are staying at Stoke's home for two weeks to attend the Dukeries Cup race and ball.Teversault is very attracted to George and needed to come to terms with his feelings for her before deciding to pursue her. Loved the scavenger hunt scene when Stoke finds a copy of the scavenger hunt map, outwits the rest of the group and finds and hides the fact that he has found the golden apple that George has offered as a prize. George explains why she offered the golden apple as the gift and Stoke's reaction is priceless. I wondered if these two very different people could find happiness with each other. Enjoyed the many scenes with Stoke, George, William and Kitty--great dialogue and insight to the characters and their motivations. There were several surprises along the way as the story reached it's conclusion --- and the ending was wonderful! In my opinion, each author was true to their own writing style within the anthology format. What stands out the most to me is that each author contributed an original story written for this anthology and that there was continuity within each of the four novellas. Dancing in the Duke's Arms is a true collaboration. Characters appeared throughout each of the stories and there was a common setting and theme which added to the feel of the stories.

Very Entertaining By Diane Spigonardo If you are a fan of the Regency and love romances written about dukes (and who doesn’t) than this is the novel for you. Each story is written by a well-known author featuring a duke and a special lady who wins his heart. Each story is connected in some way, which is an added bonus. Keeps you turning the pages – and did I mention hot, you might have to turn up the air conditioned while reading. Well done by all.
