A little while ago in the multiple-award-winning Mittens, best friends Nina and Samantha finally realised they've got the hots for each other. Took them long enough. Jeez. Even though they're now an established couple, Nina has still not confessed her love of watersports to Samantha - the desire that gnaws at her daily, but she's too embarrassed to admit to. On the other hand, Samantha has still not shown Nina the high-energy experimental vibrator she keeps in a shoebox - a machine so ridiculously powerful that it can't use batteries, and must instead be plugged into a high-wattage industrial power supply. Of course, these aren't the only secrets. We all have them, after all - but secrets can't be kept forever, between two people so close. Sooner or later, the light gets in. And if you put a masochist and a mad scientist in a room together, sooner or later, the electrodes come out...

On her eighteenth birthday, Amanda has a dream that feels strangely lifelike. When Amanda recounts the experience to Melinda, the faithful housekeeper who has looked after her since her mother’s death, she assures her it’s meaningless, with no significance at all. But Melinda isn’t telling Amanda the truth.

Craig, the older brother of Amanda’s friend Hanna, has loved Amanda from afar for years. But a deep secret, going back centuries in time, keeps him from ever making a move.

When Melinda, who has a secret of her own, tells Craig about Amanda’s dream, it changes everything between them. Two vampires posing as men are pursuing Amanda, and Craig is devoted to keeping her safe. Luckily Craig and his sister are Hunters, the only supernatural creatures able to defeat the evil beings.

Craig and Hanna will do anything to protect Amanda, because they know that their friend has a special mission…even though she doesn’t have any idea of what’s happening around her or who she truly is.

An unusual paranormal read By Whispering Stories **I received a free copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review**My rating 3.5 stars - but Amazon don't do half stars. After having a surreal dream on her 18th birthday in which she is wandering through a desolate house, Amanda wakes up confused and wondering why it all felt so real.To celebrate her birthday, her two best friends take her on a surprise trip to the lake to have a private girly party, however they are not alone as two strangers are watching them from afar, noticed only by Hanna. After their party, Hanna seems to be acting strangely and doesn’t want Amanda to be left alone, unless she is at home, and tells her not to invite anyone in to her house. If it’s not Hanna accompanying her to places, it’s her quiet but lovely brother, Craig.Something is wrong and Amanda wants answers, but no one seems to want to tell her the truth. Will she every discover what changed on the day of her 18th birthday?"The Eternity Road" is a YA Paranormal story written by a début novelist. The premise of the book, a young woman with secrets so hidden that even she doesn’t know about them, thrown amongst a group of immortal hunters, she knows nothing about, is exciting. Add in the Vampires who need her and a few witches along the way and this is the perfect book for paranormal fans.I really enjoyed the book up until it started having flashbacks. Some of them, I’ll admit, were needed as the book wouldn’t have worked without them. Some however, really didn’t add anything to the story, and in fact I actually found that they distracted the focus away from the main plot. I didn’t really need to know all about the hunters’ past lives, and how and why they became hunters. This kind of information is best left either out completely, or written in a prequel. The main characters all had their own voices and characteristics, and all added depth to the story in their own special way. I particularly liked Ruben as this was a ‘man’ who had been around for a long time, and turns out he just wanted someone to love. He thinks that he may have found that perfect person, surprising even himself!Amanda is a strong, sassy young woman, but I struggled to connect with her. I can normally visualise characters in my head when I’m reading, but I couldn’t with Amanda, which was a shame as the story was all about her.The book ends without fully revealing all of the answers, but with a ‘To Be Continued’ as the final sentence, I’m sure that book two will fill you in on them.If you’re in to YA Paranormal books then this is something slightly different to your average novel. A good book which I was eager to read, but it didn’t hold me captivated, unfortunately – I would still need to read book two though, as I have many questions that I would like answering.Reviewed by Stacey on Whispering Stories Book Blog

By Danielle *** Received this as a free book for an honest review***First I must say, I don't generally read G rated novels, and seldom do I read YA, but I love the paranormal so I agreed to read it. That being said, I rated according to the book, the writing, and how I feel my teens would also fare with this book. Now of days with the paranormal being very sexualized, its great to be able to give young girls/boys something to read without worrying about content.Book ReviewEternity Roadby Lana Melyan4.8 StarsYoung Adult book with zero sensual content, great for young teens also! This book, I will not tell a lie, was a little rough the first half of the first chapter. It was choppy and felt forced to get to the point and destination of where it needed to be. Basically was trying to put a minor back ground, although needed, was hard to get through when you read as often as I do. This is why I took off a tiny bit. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised by the end of that first chapter that it became more fluid and easy to read. The dialog was much easier to read, and although young (teenage language) it had substance that was interesting. The story was continuous and allowed for a faster paced read. There was always something going on and I genuinely liked that.Story begins with a young girl who is dreaming vivid dreams. She is in this house that is empty that she calls the “dusty house”. Amanda’s mother died, it was just her, her dad and her caretaker. She had two best friends, Hanna and Kimberly, who she did everything with. Hanna’s ‘brother’ Craig was the guy she had an impossible crush on, but knew there was just no chance for her because he was just very distant although caring. It wasn’t long into the story strange things began to happen, vampires became real, people were able to heal at impossible speeds. The vampires want something from her…but do the people she cares about the most also want something from her? And if so, are they even her real friends, or just being kind to get something from her?The story unfolds in different times. Three different times to be exact, but it is done in a way that was easy to follow. It doesn’t jump all over the place. If you don’t like cliff hangers, this isn’t the book for you lol because it ends with the story beginning a new chapter of someones life. It’s like knowing a person just graduated medical school and received their residency paperwork. Ok, what’s next lol…but I like cliff hangers so I really liked her placement. Was a perfect spot to end the book. All in all, if a young teen / young adult is looking for a good book, this is a great start to a series. If you are looking for high romance, look elsewhere, but there is some kindling romance and its G. There is a minor kissing moment. All in all great beginning for this authors series!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it sometimes felt like there was over exaggeration on how people were talking ... By Samantha Received free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This was a very interesting read. There was a lot of information to absorb as well, from the origin to the backstory of what’s going on.The way it was written, it sometimes felt like there was over exaggeration on how people were talking and walking. Example, a girl was walking with enough force that it looked like she was kicking people. That just makes me think she looked like she was marching military style or she was rearing her legs back and actually kicking. When there wasn’t over exaggeration though, the writing was good.In the beginning there was a little high school drama and it was a little slow to get going but when the drama stopped and the plot picked up, I was hooked, especially with one character that I had a bad feeling about.I really loved the fact that the author brought the readers into the past every now and again and I really never saw the ending coming. This ending is something that even if it was spoiled, I would still be surprised at how this all turned out.The cover is gorgeous, it’s very eye catching. I know if I saw this in a store, I’d look back at it and read the back cover so you see, it’s kind of a double edged sword on judging a book by its cover. The pace is a little slow but the plot takes some explaining so it’s rather appropriate and the characters take a little time to connect as well, at least for me, but it is emotional when you do connect.I would recommend this to people wanting to get into the vampire genre or are fans of The Vampire Diaries.

Review

  • "In their introduction to the book, Medeiros and Colasurdo write, "It's a beautiful thing to tour one's own state and discover a thriving green foods scene in every corner, with pick-your-own operations; rustic roadside farm stands and clam shacks; community-centered farmers' markets in the cities and suburbs; and gorgeous farms, vineyards, and orchards." (Having grown up in Connecticut, I have fond memories of picking blueberries, apples and peaches at nearby farms)... - Yankee Magazine
  • "For me, The Connecticut Farm Table is a model to which other cookbook/travelogue hybrids should aspire." - Cooks & Books & Recipes
  • "Not only do you get a broad cross-section of foods, the recipes vary greatly, from simple, easy-to-toss-together dishes, to ones requiring both time and some kitchen skills."   -Accidental locavore
  • "What delights me most about The Connecticut Farm Table Cookbook is its splendid localness. I know and have visited a lot of the farms and restaurants featured in the book. What's that? You don't live in Connecticut? So you think this book holds nothing for you? Nonsense." - Leite's CULINARIA
  • "It digs deep into Connecticut's rich agricultural history and food production while engaging in conversations with the Nutmeg state's farmers, artisans and chefs, telling the story through lively profiles and raw and engaging photos." - Venu Magazine
  • "This book makes me want to engage with all of the resources. Go to Connecticut, book in hand, rent a car and explore." - Pen & Fork
  • "Each page introduces you to a farm, their life, what they do, how they got started and then shares a delicious recipe." - Hip Foodie Mom
  • "What I really love most about this stuffing -- and what I think makes it stand out -- is the roasted root vegetable mixture. Rutabaga, beet, carrot, onion, garlic, fresh rosemary, and fresh sage are roasted with a little olive oil and honey before going into a buttered baking dish with the rest of the stuffing ingredients." -The Kitchn

From the Author My inspiration for writing these books has always been the desire to promote community wellness by growing food in a healthy responsible way. This has been my message in each of my books and a lifelong purpose. Every person that has been featured in my cookbooks has deeply inspired me by the work that they do. Their dedication and strong commitment to preserving their state's agricultural way of life through the support of the local food culture is truly amazing. Writing The Connecticut Farm Table Cookbook has given me the joyous opportunity to connect with many of the Nutmeg State's hardworking farmers, chefs, and food producers. Their passion for what they do shines through in their strong commitment to preserving Connecticut's agricultural way of life by supporting the local food culture. The catch phrase, "Buy Local," has become the mantra of both farmers and chefs.  Knowing that there is a conscious effort on the part of the consumer to maintain a healthier lifestyle, the Connecticut food scene is evolving, embracing the virtues of local, organic, seasonal, and sustainable ingredients." - Tracey Medeiros   For me, writing The Connecticut Farm Table Cookbook was a labor of love inspired by the rich agricultural bounty available in all parts of my home state of Connecticut. For one year, I traveled the state from end to end--from the tony, four-star restaurants dotting Fairfield County's Gold Coast to the ancient oystering beds in Groton and along the Shoreline, to the picturesque farms and wineries in Litchfield County, and to the clam shacks, roadside stands, pick-your-own orchards, and berry farms. In the end, I found Connecticut's rich farming traditions thriving. Along the way, I enjoyed meeting and profiling each of the chefs and growers and chefs in the book, and convincing them to share their stories and recipes with us, and to allow us to photograph them at work. I was inspired to bring these stories to life through profiles that offer insight to the people behind the foods. These farmers, chefs and food purveyors often work from sunup to sundown to bring us fresh, locally farmed goodness that is quintessentially Connecticut, keeping the state's best regional food traditions alive.   -- Christy Colasurdo

Burnett The Connecticut Farm Table Cook Book by Christy Colasurdo and Tracey Medeiros celebrates the life and passions of Connecticut farms and farmers. As an East Coast person growing up across the Long Island Sound from tis great state in New York I was fascinated to learn more about these great people and to learn more about how to cook, prepare, and enjoy farm life and the amazing foods grown on them. From vegetable to live stock; supporting a local farmer is an important part of Americana and gives this young country of our tradition to learn from and follow.I can easily see these dynamic authors doing a similar book for other states (selfishly I would love to see them do one for Long Island who also has amazing farmers, farms and vineyards). The Connecticut Farm Table Cook Book is beautifully written and photographed. The stories and recipes that are shared are interesting, exciting to read and make one want to go out an shop locally or at least to eat better and use more produce in their lives. It has everything for all the home cooks, foodies, organics, etc.… But to me the most import important part of this wonderful book is the excitement in which the two authors share the stories of the Farmers and making the recipes interesting and easy to follow. The recipes are also geared to small families, not like the cookbooks of the past whose recipes are for 6-12 people. My husband and I love the portions that are offered and as the frustrated chef I enjoy not having to deconstruct a recipe to suit a two-person household.I have personally not tried every recipe yet but I do have lots of favorites so far and as a foodie and someone who loves to feed people I am fully enjoying The Connecticut Farm Table Cook Book. But one of my favorites is The “Chicken Ginger-Stir Fry” on page 192 is one of the simplest and freshest meals I have had in a long time. So simple, yet using simple FRESH ingredients lets you enjoy all of the flavors within in it. This recipe is from the CT Farms, LLC.This cookbook also highlights some of Connecticut’s most dynamic chefs. When I travel I usually plan my vacations and trips around food. Drives my husband crazy. But when I go somewhere new I want to be emerged in the culture and food and the people preparing them are a big part of learning about where you are visiting. This cookbook is a food travels dream for learning everything they need to know about he great state of Connecticut. I will definitely be using this when I plan to travel to se family now in Connecticut on my next visit. The possibilities are endless, the information is on point and the food is wonderful. Congratulations to Christy Colasurdo and Tracey Medeiros on tis wonderful cookbook celebrating Connecticut, its farms and farmers and honoring the history of that great state.Click here now and buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

A Fresh-from-the-Farm Travelogue with Recipes By Cooks&Books&Recipes This cookbook is as much about the people behind the food as it is about the food. Medeiros and Colasurdo tell the stories of the family farms, farmstands, bakeries, butcheries, vineyards, cheesemakers, and other food sources across the state. What I like best about the cookbook is that every recipe comes from one of the food sources, restaurants, or chefs highlighted here. And let’s not forget the recipes! If you, like me, are getting just a bit tired of hearing the phrase “farm-to-table,” The Connecticut Farm Table Cookbook will restore your faith in its original meaning. Starlight Farm’s Kale Salad with Sour Cherry Vinaigrette; Chilled Pea and Leak Soup with Salmon Gravlax and Pickled Shallots; Autumn Pasta Sauce of Cauliflower and Apples; Skirt Steak over Roasted Butternut Squash, Rainbow Swiss Chard, Topped with Caramelized Onions; Macerated Summer Fruit Tart – the common denominator? Fresh-from-the-producer ingredients. But this is so much more than a cookbook: it is also a very comprehensive travel guide. The photo is our version of Artisan Italian Sausage, Onion, and Kale Frittata.

Religion is the way we answer life's questions that cannot be answered with scientific proof. Religious answers depend, instead, on trust or faith. This book offers the answers of twenty-five world religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Daoism, and Confucianism. Why are we here? Where are we headed? What happens after this? Is there a God? Is this life all there is? How then shall we live? It's a book about seeing the world with others' lenses. Every chapter is short, originally intended as nightly homework assignments for my high school students. The other reason for short chapters is that learning world religions is a little like learning other languages: it's best done in manageable, daily portions. Following the lead of my hero, Professor Huston Smith, I try to present each religion in its best light for a reader who doesn't know much about it. Why a tree? Religion grows out of the "soil" of the human soul no matter where we are "planted." People explain good lives and bad, misfortune, life after death, and the meanings of existence and nonexistence. As religions become older and more organized, they stretch toward the sun, and even now new branches and buds are appearing. This book organizes religions into the eras in which they emerged, and offers comparisons within each era.

Great single-volume overview By Brian Melendez I received a copy of this book from the author in early 2015 after talking about theology the first time that he and I met. He is an Episcopal priest, and I hold a master's degree in theology, so it was a natural topic for us. I loved the book as soon as I started reading it: it is eminently readable, it tackles complex histories and concepts with clarity and grace, and it is well illustrated. It is as good an overview as I have seen of world religions in a single volume, and it treats each faith tradition with understanding and insight -- and draws some comparisons between them (especially when tracing their origins and evolution) that may not be obvious, but that illustrate how so many divergent faith traditions have so much in common. As soon as I started reading, I went online to buy an extra copy or two, but couldn't find it -- so I am very happy to finally see it on amazon. I just bought the Kindle version, and I hope to get more hard copies too.

Clear, concise and compelling By Princess Mishawaka What I like most about The Tree of World Religions is how approachable it makes such complex material. The writing is direct and clear, the illustrations are helpful, and the whole package is inviting. I'm not the most spiritual person and not often drawn to read books about faith and comparative religion. It's wonderful to feel so much better (and painlessly) informed. I also appreciate the respect and even-handedness with which the book treats every branch of the tree. I'm very glad I read it and expect I'll use it as a reference from time to time in the future.

Beautiful images and wonderful illustrations. It is labeled as a textbook for high school students. However, I found it very helpful for me, an older reader wanting to know how the world religions fit together. I feel it is especially important that we each have an appreciation for the religion of others as our culture in the US increasingly diversifies. This book helped me to understand the basics of our differences and the surprises of our similarities. Very clear and well-written. Tables and graphs make it easier to remember how the pieces fit together.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Despite some reservations, I'm looking forward to Volume 17. By johneidukonisart Well I finally broke down and bought this volume of the G.I.Joe Reboot/continuation of the original Marvel series fathered by Larry Hama. I was skeptical from the begining when it was reintroduced back to the world with the Free Comic Book Day issue 155.5 back in 2010. On the one hand I felt that G.I.Joe had run it's course and should be left well enough alone. Larry had a great run with the exception of a few issues up until the cancellation at issue 155. On the other hand I felt kind of burned by the negation of everything that had happened in the Devil's due relaunch of 2001. And even though I was no big fan of that series, I did'nt want to get sucked into another Joe universe/continuity and then have the rug pulled out from under me and have the whole series tossed away as non-canonical as was done with the Devil's Due series. Well 5 years into it G.I.Joe A real American Hero (RAH) is running strong and seems to be the definitive G.I. Joe continuity.... so long as Larry Hama is at the helm that is. So with this latest reprint edition I thought now is the perfect opportunity to see what I have been missing since the relaunch. Before going into the content of this collected edition let me say that I was and still am a HUGE Joe fan. The original Marvel series was one of my favorite comics that I collected back in the day and with the latest relaunch by LH I should have been ecstatic. The reason I could not bring myself to buy into this new series was partly due to Mr. Hama's apparent leftist bent displayed in the early story arc ( Oh by the way did I mention that I am a PROUD American, Army veteran?) To begin with, there is a veiled comparison in my opinion between American terrorists and the Tea Party. See issue 155.5 and you be the judge. I was put off by that. But even worse, and more disturbing is a scene in issue 157 in which Snake Eyes with the help of Duke and Scarlet actually Slaughter American citizens. It is a bizarre scene in which armed vigilante types confront Cobra troops posing as defense contractors for letting a detained group of "migrant workers" go free. The joes start killing the vigilante types even though they are sworn to protect U.S. citizens and seemingly save the Cobras. They then tell the "migrant workers" to "vamanos" who in response say that they speak english and are American citizens. The whole scene is confusing and I found myself waiting for some explanation like the vigilantes were really Cobras or something. Larry would'nt really have the joes kill Americans would he?! It smacked of Open borders leftist liberal politics which I found to be very insulting and non-sensical, not to mention way out of character for the joes to side with Cobra and kill Americans. If anyone can explain this one to me, please do. So I wanted to throw the book down right then and there but what the heck I paid for the damn thing might as well keep reading. The next form of Larry's apparent liberalism comes in the form of a question: Can a 90lb woman lift up a fully armed weapons loaded full gear battle rattle wounded male soldier and safely carry him out of danger? In Larry's world, Scarlet can do that and fight her way through endless cobras with a wounded Snake Eyes on her back. More political correctness run amok. Not sure why Larry had to prove this point. Any way the whole Cobra as defense contractors and the Joes are fugitives on the run scenario plays out in an anti climatic way and almost seemed like a wasted opportunity for good story telling. Interesting concept that failed to be exploited to it's full potential and now come to think of it seemed a little too similar to a story that took place after the Cobra Civil War from the first series. Repetition of past stories and events seemed to occur almost with an intentional irony throughout this volume. As the first story line subsided so too did Larry's apparent leftist leanings and remarks. In fact it could be argued that there were some right-wing comments in the dialogue as well. Catch them if you can. As the issues moved on I began to feel a little more at ease. You could definately tell it was the Larry of old writing this series. There was an interesting plotline involving the Brain wave scanner which I never liked from the old series. Loose ends were wrapped up from the cancellation of the first series which to me was satisfying to finally scratch a 15 year itch so to speak. One thing I never got out of this relaunch was a sense of time. When exactly is this taking place? G.I. Joe was cancelled in 1994, appropriately enough during the Clinton administration who famously (or not so famously) slashed the military. To me it seemed to make sense then that the Joe team was deactivated since the cold war was finally over and we had no more enemies to fight according to our politicians at the time. Throughout the book I was looking for a reference or a stated date and time for when this is supposed to be happening and other than the digital cammies worn by the pentagon soldiers (introduced in 2004) and an off hand reference to the Dept. of Homeland Security, (formed in 2002) there was none. I felt it was kind of relevant to know since the last time we read and experienced the G.I. Joe series was pre September 11th/Pre War on Terror. But I guess LH wants to just kind of gloss over that whole thing, you know the biggest event in recent U.S. history and biggest terrorist attack ever. If Larry has addressed this at all in recent issues, someone please let me know where and what issue. Saying that it takes place in some anomalous "present day" is just a cop out. We are NEVER told exactly how much time has passed between the shuddering of the PIT in issue 155 and the events taking place in the new series. Overall it was great to see old characters again. Any Joe fan will enjoy this collection for the writing style, and those great characters that LH brought to life. Not sure how new readers will react but if you remember the 80's series you will recognise that sense of style and excitement that LH brought to the whole franchise. He seems to have recaptured the spark but can he take it to a new level or will he make more bone-headed mistakes like introducing the Transformers? The Artwork: I could nit-pick about some of the artwork like the poor application of photoshop in the backgrounds, the mix-ups in cobra uniforms, the funny faces of S L Gallant, but artists are artists. It's easy for me to enjoy and appreciate the artwork because I am an artist. I must say that some of the "retro" alternate covers by Herb Trimpe and Rod Whigham were better than the "real" ones. Just wish they included them side by side instead of one at the beginning of each issue and one at the end. Kind of made it seem like the cover for the next issue. I would have liked to see some more bonus type material such as introductions, commentaries, file cards, anything to justify reprinting this in the Classic format. Lastly, the new cover for this Classic collection is by an artist named Chris Madden, who in a Scott Campbell-esqe style manages to give the Joes a playful cute and cuddly Manga look to them. Save it for My little Pony.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A thrilling conclusion to the manga series By Theralion The fourth and final volume of the Girls und Panzer manga takes us to the climax of the series- the final match against Miho's old school, formerly the reigning champions. Miho's older sister, Maho, leads Oarai's opponent, a team that few have defeated, but which Oarai must defeat in order to remain open, thus leading to a thrilling climactic battle. The highlights of the battle, which those who watched the anime will likely remember, are largely present. You get to see Oarai employ strategies that must be seen to be believed, in order to defeat an enemy that outnumbers and outguns them. Unfortunately, this is largely Anglerfish-centric, so you don't get to see as much of what the other tanks are doing late in the battle. In spite of that, there's a great deal of information that explains many things better than the anime does, so this manga could essentially be considered a companion piece to help show information that the anime could not; for die-hard fans, that alone might be reason enough to purchase this volume.Oarai's final opponent is underutilized for its role in the story, though. They're not entirely as victory-obsessed and ruthless as their reputation might lead one to believe- Maho, in particular, cares for Miho much more than she lets on- but we don't get to see all that much of them. Even Erika- Miho's replacement as vice-captain- while an arrogant bully who cruelly upbraids Miho for "abandoning" her old school (by contrast, Erika in the anime was dismissive of but not bitter toward Miho), has a great deal of loyalty to her commander and her school. Furthermore, while Miho is clearly happier at her new school, there are implications that she parted ways with friends when she left. As such, Miho's old school is woefully underdeveloped, which removes a great deal of the emotional undercurrent to the match. To a lesser extent, the most recent additions to Oarai's team only get a brief introduction for characterization, which is one flaw of having less time for the already large cast in a 21-chapter manga series than there is in a 12-episode anime. As might be expected, and similar to the anime, the manga ends with many of the plotlines resolved and others still open. It's a decent ending for the moment, but definitely seems to be building up to a sequel, which might be nice to see if it ever is made.If you enjoyed the Girls und Panzer manga thus far, and don't mind some parts missing from the manga, the fourth and final volume is well worth your time and money.
