Jake White is your typical middle-aged father, who is just trying to get by and provide a better life for his family. In the span of a single night, his world is turned upside down by an alien snatch team bent on killing everyone he loves. After dealing with the snatch team, he is befriended by a benevolent, sentient alien scout ship and asked to help out with a small problem that unintentionally puts him in the awkward position of being either Earth’s savior - or the worst mass murderer in history. Forced to seek help from an old Special Forces buddy, Marc Stack, the two set out to help Jake's newfound alien friend. Along the way, they discover mankind is but one of many sentient beings in the galaxy and that extraterrestrials with a galactic corporate agenda have been visiting Earth for thousands of years. If discovering extraterrestrials have infested Earth was not enough of a shock, Jake notices that something strange is happening to his body... Humble Beginnings is written in a style reminiscent of classic sci-fi and tells the story of a reluctant hero thrust into extraordinary circumstances that will determine Earth's future, but includes elements of a mystery action thriller. It explores the premise that extraterrestrials have been on Earth for a long time and are doing a lot more than just visiting – the question is why? What is so interesting about Earth that beings capable of interstellar travel would even bother with a comparatively "primitive" species which is constantly at war with itself. The book offers a refreshingly different take on “extraterrestrials are the good guys and here only to help mankind with our journey to the stars.” Ask yourself - how would extraterrestrials behave if they were motivated by many of the same vices humans are susceptible to? Like any good mystery the foreshadowing is subtle, you may want to read it more than once.

An Incomprehensible Mess By Mark Hargrove It is very rare for me to rate a book one star, but this was one of the most incomprehensible messes I've tried to read in a long time. I struggled to get 25 pages into it. While it's not *that* unusual to be dropped into the middle of action from the first page of a story, the device is typically used to cause us to immediately engage with a character, followed relatively quickly by a bit of backstory to explain the initial action. This book starts like that -- but just keeps going. Sort of. After twenty-five-ish pages of "this incredibly improbable thing happened, follow this by *other* incredibly unlikely thing happening to my friend, followed by this *other other* thing happening while the two of us were trying to do some extremely dangerous *other other other* thing, while...." I either had to start taking notes so I wouldn't forget all of the suspended plot points or just give up. I gave up. I cannot imagine how this book got 4 and 5 star ratings from anybody.

The premise of the story sounded like it had promise. I don't know if it was the absence of proper punctuation, the lack of depth of the characters, the cliches that riddled the plot, or just direction of the story. It was like reading something a high school student wrote and never had anyone check for errors. I don't know what story those others reviewers who gave this book 4 or 5 stars were reading but it wasn't this one!

The story is getting to be a little boring already. We've got to get to the galactic big boys if we've got any hope of saving earth from our invaders who intend to enslave us. The galactic big boys have no reason to prevent our enslavement because they think we're too primitive. So we've got to escape in a captured ship in order to prove we're better than they think we are. You just know that we're going to get to the galactic center and find that they are all unconcerned about our fate, and there will be those who support us because of their own agenda to enslave us and those who sabotage us and misdirect us for their own purposes. Probably by book three we'll decide to hell with them all and put together our own battle plan to win freedom for ourselves in the face of the entire galaxy.
