Adrienne, fresh out of high school, wants to live her life as she always has, but her family decides to drop everything and move across the country. Now Adrienne has to deal with a whirlwind of life changes, with no one to reach out to for help. She finds herself in a place she does not belong, struggling to understand a culture far different from her own, which seems eternally nostalgic for glory days that never were. While her family rapidly slips off the deep end into fundamentalism, Adrienne is losing her faith in a good and loving God and a just universe. In her strange new residence, nature seems harsh and malevolent and people look upon "outsiders" with suspicion.

And parents who are more than a bit moronic. We never found out why they decided to move from San Diego to Arkansas. There are all too many religious overtones to make this enjoyable reading. The people of Arkansas are portrayed as fanatic Bible-bangers. If I lived in Arkansas, I would be greatly insulted. And the ending? Bleh.....Nothing more from this author.

The first part gave me a feeling of agoraphobia, and the second part gradually turned that into claustrophobia instead, also generating a sense of cosmic dread as I became more aware of Adrian's situation. And the ending brought me to tears!
