From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—Charlie is dreading her senior year. Introverted, not traditionally pretty, and a bit of a bookworm, she has her sights set on life after high school. In fact, Charlie has applied early decision to Oberlin College. Her ever-loyal best friend, Lila, has become popular overnight, throwing Charlie's social inadequacies into sharper contrast. Mr. Drummond, her new English teacher, is the only bright spot in her life. He's young, super-friendly, and seems to get her. When Charlie's Type-A mother insists that she participate in an extracurricular activity, the girl joins the school newspaper, newly revived by Mr. Drummond. Charlie develops an intense and all-consuming crush on him, fueled by their time working on the newspaper together and discussing books in and out of class. Mr. Drummond is friendly to everyone, but Charlie senses that there is something different about his feelings for her. Alcott pushes the boundaries in this exploration of a taboo student-teacher relationship. Charlie's sexual thoughts and desires are candidly and honestly depicted. Complex emotional content is handled tactfully and sensitively. Additionally, all of Alcott's characters are well developed, from Charlie's parents to the Indian American twins in her English class, who befriend her. All have distinct personalities and motivations, adding to the realistic atmosphere the author has created. The witty repartee among characters is reminiscent of the dialogue in John Green's novels or a Gilmore Girls episode—although slightly improbable at times, it never fails to entertain. VERDICT A cutting-edge exploration of a thorny topic, this is a wonderful debut novel.—Ragan O'Malley, Saint Ann's School, Brooklyn, NY

Jessica Alcott takes on a taboo subject with unflinching honesty and emotion in Even When You Lie to Me. I loved this book from start to finish.I immediately liked Charlie. I felt for her, not because I was in love with a teacher, but because she is so awkward and uncomfortable around her peers. I was exactly the same way. Charlie and I even had the same type of best friend: someone beautiful, popular, and fun. Charlie lives in Lila's shadow and is happy to stay there, not because she's content but because she has such low self-esteem that she can't imagine a different high school experience. But all of that changes when she meets Mr. Drummond. Charlie immediately feels a connection to him. At first, she thinks he's making fun of her: giving her a nickname (Chuck), calling on her in class, teasing her about her answer to a question. But Lila insists that Mr. Drummond likes Charlie. And all of a sudden, Charlie's life gets a lot more interesting. This story was so enthralling. I loved the writing style, the subject matter and the character growth. Once I started Even When You Lie to Me, I was so captivated by the story (how was it going to end?!) that I had to read it in one sitting. I loved the realism and the way Alcott developed her characters. I didn't always like them, but I always understood them and that is a hallmark of a great read.I was so conflicted as I read Even When You Lie to Me. I wanted Charlie to be happy, all the while knowing Mr. Drummond was not the right person for her. I think at its heart, this book is about first love, and how falling in love for the first time stains a person, for better or worse.I want to make it clear that I don't condone teacher-student relationships. I think that even when the student is of age, the fact that the teacher is in an authority position just makes it wrong. And Alcott seems to share the same view because her book doesn't treat the teacher-student relationship with sympathy or acceptance. No, her characters know that it's wrong, that their behavior is inappropriate, and the struggle between their desires of lust and doing what's right was the crux of the novel. Many readers will probably dislike the ending; however, I thought it was perfect, if a little abrupt. I loved the growth in Charlotte and the way she steps outside of her comfort zone and makes new friends throughout the school year. I finished the book knowing that she'd have a bright future ahead of her. Is there really anything more we can ask for in a contemporary fiction novel?Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

She has a chip on her shoulder. She feels like an outsider in school and at home, but fails to see her contribution to her situations. An introvert, she's mismatched with her extroverted best friend Lila. Charlie feels like a victim, but she is often more unkind in thought, words and actions, to Lila than Lila is to her. In fact, Charlie isn't very kind to any of her classmates who try to befriend her, or to her well-meaning mother who tries and miserably fails to connect with her. She claims to feel close to her father, though she consistently manipulates him. I had a lot of empathy for her in the beginning of the novel, but instead of growing and learning, Charlie seemed to regress and become more obstinate and immature, justifying her poor behavior. I liked her in chapter one, but nearing the end of the book I only rooted for someone to force her to see how she mistreated others, then drag her to a therapist to help her figure out how to interact with others. To me Charlie's relationship with herself was even more central to EVEN WHEN YOU LIE TO ME than her relationship to Mr Drummond or Lila or her parents.Rarely do I like a book, particularly a first person narrative, when I dislike a main character, but I did enjoy EVEN WHEN YOU LIE TO ME. It made me think.Mr Drummond flirted with all his students. In some ways, his classes were more reminiscent of the way college professors interact with adult students, than high school students. Drummond tried to be the Cool Teacher, allowing his students to get away with too much. He didn't treat Charlie differently than the others, but she was vulnerable for validation and attention. He knew this, maybe too late, but once he realized, instead of putting up stronger boundaries, crossed the line repeatedly with Charlie. Whenever he lamely said no, she tried harder. This is when he needed to be teacher, rather than friend. My biggest criticism about EVEN WHEN YOU LIE TO ME is how Jessica Alcott addressed masturbation through Charlie's Puritanical perceptions that normal, healthy self-pleasure was shamefully sinful. My other critique is not really Alcott's fault, but MCs who love literature, English class, English teachers are becoming clique. Maybe that's because writers, in general love English and literature, as do many readers. I like characters who favor English, but some diversity of interests, even if that means writers researching other subjects like math or science or a foreign language.Bottom line: EVEN WHEN YOU LIE TO ME is about a high school senior who has a crush on a teacher and difficult relationships with everyone, especially herself.

By autumnleavves I want to review this book in a different format than I usually do because this book was written brilliantly and yet I feel as though many who might've read it, didn't see the story for what is was/is.This author is an incredibly talented writer and if she's continues to publish the high quality of her talent then I believe she will become a huge success. I know when a book really blows me away because I'm left speechless but with a million questions.so on that note -------- SPOILER ALERT!!!! ----------I cried myself to sleep last night when I finished this story bc my heart broke for the 2 main characters. I felt as though there really was a genuine true love involved but it was taboo and "supposedly inappropriate" for our politically correct world.I didn't get what I wanted but I get why the author wrote each and every line until the end. The ending gutted me to which I'm brought to tears again as I type this.So many of us in the real world could only dream of "true love" no matter how, whether it be age, sex, etc. This, to me was true love in a very difficult situation. The insecurities of this superficial world we live in...the outcomes of the scarring times in high school. I just don't think it was/is fair to see true love walk away from one another regardless and I, of course would love the author to even write another book to this story...I'd even take a novella. (10 years later??)My heart is broken because in my heart the heroine was an "old soul" and acted well above her age yet because she was in the "Land Of Shallow and Stereotypes" she never saw herself for the beautiful person she really was and the one person who did, just couldn't be at this point and time.Thank You Jessica Alcott for your words bc they found a place in my heart!(please consider my suggestion PLEASE!!)*this review was also affiliated with FMR - The Grind Book Blog
