It is a perfect volume for new X-fans who want to get into the X-Men. The artwork spans the 40 years that X-Men have been in publication. This visual feast has been reproduced on thick, glossy paper which makes the artwork "pop" better than it ever did in the old magazines. Veteran X-Fans may want to check their collections because most of these issues have been collected in other graphic novels, but the presentation and material are strong enough that I wanted to add this volume to my collection. The bonus sketches of characters and costumes that didn't make the cut also adds value for collectors.Those who are starting their collections, however, are in for a treat. This graphic novel collects the pivotal Giant Size X-Men #1 that introduces the modern X-Men (Wolverine, Colossus, Storm, Nightcrawler) as they are recruited for a mission to save the original X-Men (Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, Angel, Marvel Girl). If there could be a single "most important" issue of the X-Men, this one would be it. The rest of the issues complement Giant Size X-Men #1 and expand on the team's origin story by showing how tenuous and fractious the X-Men were as well as the diverse backgrounds and personal issues that each character carries.Overall this collection is great for new readers looking for a "jumping on" point for the X-Men. Collecting all the big origin events in one place is a lot of fun and makes a great read. The varied art styles from across the years makes the volume visually interesting. Finally, Marvel's large hardcover graphic novels are just beautiful on a shelf, and they preserve and present my favorite comics so that I can keep reading them for years to come!

Comprehensive Collection of All-New X-Men's Origins By Tim Field I must admit that I'm not a huge fan of the X-men - too many characters, too many reboots, too much angst - but I did enjoy this massive 40th anniversary edition celebrating the first appearance of the revitalized team. The highlight for me was the Deadly Genesis miniseries which, although published a decade ago, flew completely under my radar. Ed Brubaker does a seamless job in creating an exciting and moving story while inserting some retroactive continuity. I was less impressed by the What If? Tales, but overall this is a well-curated volume that will please the longtime X-Men fan as well as the newbie.
