2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. LOVE the main character! By Bekah Awesome Book Nut There were many things I liked about this book and many things I didn't. Then there came a part that it just felt like it dragged on...Lucy is at a party, kisses 2 boys and 1 happens to be her BFFs boyfriend. OOPS! someone gets a snapshot and posts it on the internet which of course the whole school finds out about. plus some other photos that speak 1,000 words and are interpreted how they think they saw it. And so begins the destruction of this one girls life.What I liked about the book: Lucy has a GREAT sense of humor and I always enjoy that in a character. She is snarky and I think because of it she was able to withstand a lot of the bullying, backstabbing, lies, hurtful things said/done, and what not. Because if you don't have a sense of humor life is gonna suck. Lucy is a very strong character, due to everything that happens after the "scandal" breaks out she is able to withstand and let things roll of her back and push forward regardless of what was going on around her and I think that is so important in literature especially in YA because it helps teach kids to not fall apart at every little thing, there are mean people in the world and I like that this author chose a character who is able to withstand it. The author does a great job of showing this strong character that she IS human and that she isn't a cold brick wall but that even though she is strong there are times when it became too much and I liked that, she would have moments of heartache but was able to pick herself back up and move one. I REALLY appreciated that.Cole is the BFF's boyfriend and he is with Lucy every step of the way. He doesn't just leave her hanging. He helps her, builds her up and continues to let her know that he is there. I liked him.There were other great characters in this story that you really grew to like and some interesting twists at the end that you aren't expecting.What I got from this story is the destructive nature technology can be, as well as bullying, lies, and other things that every day teenagers deal with in this day-in-age. I appreciated what the author was trying to do with this story as well as tell a good story.Sexual Content: moderate (innuendoes, kissing, the idea that characters had sex)Langage: heavyViolence: moderateDrugs/Alcohol: moderate (a party where there is underage drinking)
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One of a kind novel By Gabbie PlotThe premise of this novel is pretty straight-forward. Someone uploads compromising pictures from an after-prom party to the main character, Lucy’s, Facebook, framing her as the perpetrator. Everyone in her school turns against her including her best friend Ellie after she sees pictures of Lucy kissing her ex-boyfriend, Cole. So Lucy sets out on a quest to find out who exactly framed her while avoiding the watchful eye of her principal and avoiding all the negativity that comes from her peers.#scandal was unlike anything that I’ve ever read before. For one, I have never read a novel that social media and networking were such a large part of. This alone made the novel very unique for me. In addition to this, the novel had a mystery vibe to it as Lucy tried to track down the person who stole her phone and uploaded those pictures. And there was a subplot of a social media gossip columnist, Miss Demeanor, and finding out their identity. For the most part, the things that happened in this novel were unexpected. I was able to figure out the Miss Demeanor identity, but the other one? Total shock. Unfortunately, the beginning of this novel was rather dull for me. It took a few chapters to get the ball rolling and the drama flaring but after that point it was steady sailing.Leading LadyLucy was the main character. She was faced basically with slut-shaming after the big Facebook blowout. She was unbelievably strong in my eyes to be able to put up with the things that she did. I didn’t believe she was a bad person. Sure, she kissed her best friend’s ex-boyfriend, breaking the best friend code, but to be honest, I think it was pretty justified. But she was relentless in finding out who started the mess. Sure, she had her faults like judging people on contact, but this allowed room for personal growth throughout the novel. And this definitely occurred.Leading MaleCole was the love interest in this novel. We didn’t see too much of him as all of the negativity was focused on Lucy, even though it takes two to tango. Regardless, he was very supportive of Lucy and you could see the realness of his feelings for Lucy and the fact that he did not want to hurt Ellie. I liked the little that we saw of him and I wish we could have seen more.Romance “I’m still staring at Cole, and he’s staring back at me too. Franklin must notice it, because he leans close and offers a supportive smile. ‘You can’t help who you love,’ he says, ‘even if the timing is horrendous.’ ‘Even if people you care about get hurt?’ I ask. I don’t really mean for him to answer, but he does. ‘It’s not like you can switch off your feelings. Repression never helped anyone.’ ‘That needs to be on a bumper sticker.’ ‘You’re in love with him,’ Franklin says mater-of-factly. ‘Don’t try to outrun it. You can’t.’”This novel wasn’t so much about romance as it was friendships and the adverse affects of social media. Therefore, we saw very little romance. But of what we saw, it was sweet. Real. Authentic. I wish we had seen more.Other CharactersThe supporting characters in this novel were numerous and all had their different purposes and importance.Ellie was Lucy’s former best friend who was hurt by Lucy’s actions regarding Cole. But to be honest, I felt no sympathy for her. She refused to hear Lucy out, her supposed best friend, and believed a social media site over her. That doesn’t scream good best friend to me.“He swivels his chair toward me, our knees almost touching. ‘I know it’s difficult,’ he says softly. ‘But we’ve got to review the evidence. Notes, photographs, Facebook comments. It’s embarrassing for you. But I mean it, love. No judgments.’”Franklin was a character that I enjoyed. He was British and the valedictorian and really wanted to help Lucy figure out the case. Although he had his shady moments, I felt that he was really authentic in his involvement in Lucy’s case. He was a really good friend to her in her moments of need.Then you had the (e)VILS. They were members of an anti-vanity social media group. They were weird and quirky and pretty much shunned and made fun of, but they had Lucy’s back. Once we saw more of their characters, I saw that they were really great people versus the annoying archaic people that I first thought they would be.And finally, you had Jayla, Lucy’s older sister. She was a movie star suffering from some problems and trying to make up a mistake that happened the year prior. She was kind of air-headish but she also grew immensely over the course of the novel. I think the sisterly bond that forms in this novel was a fantastic touch to the novel overall.MiscellaneousThis novel heavily refers to social media and the negativity that it can bring to people. So in addition to a thoroughly entertaining novel, Ockler also teaches readers a lesson: always think before you post something. Things that you do in the heat of the moment can ruin lives—others and your own. So be cautious of the things that you put on the internet: you never know how they will affect you and others.Conclusion#scandal was a one-of-a-kind novel with a mystery-filled plot that doubles as a life lesson. I don’t think you can get any better than that.

I'm a huge fan of Sarah Ockler's previous books, so I had high expectations for #scandal. Sadly, though, #scandal did not live up to my expectations: I was disappointed with almost everything about it. I really hate having to write a negative review for an author I love so much, but #scandal just didn't work for me.I think the problem is that there is just too much going on in #scandal. All the individual aspects of #scandal had a lot of potential, but there's just so many different storylinse and so many secondary characters that none of them turn out fully developed. It was really hard not to lose track, and at some point, I couldn't get myself to care anymore.The cyber bullying is supposed to be the main part of the story, but I don't think it's handled appropriately at all. There is too much drama and fluff for such a serious issue: #scandal reminded me more of Gossip Girl than of anything with a serious message. The mystery surrounding the #scandal didn't impress me: Lucy spends most of the novel trying to figure out two mysteries: who uploaded the pictures of her and Cole to Facebook, and who is behind the Miss Demeanor site. The first mystery, I figured out relatively early on, but the second one did manage to surprise me. It wasn't really the outcome of these mysteries that bothered me, though, but rather the fact that Lucy focused on them so much. Rather than figuring out who publicized her kiss with Cole, I wanted to see Lucy address the kiss itself, to see her apologize to Ellie and figure out what to do about the love triangle. It frustrated me how much Lucy focused on what everyone else thought, rather than trying to fix her relationships with the people that she actually cares about.I usually love Sarah Ockler's characters, but the ones in #scandal just didn't impress me. Lucy, to me, seemed kind of boring: we are told that she is a zombie-slaying badass, but we are never shown anything that would make her stand out, so she stayed a very bland character, for me. Cole's character is ridiculously underdeveloped: the whole story revolves around Lucy's hidden feelings for Cole, but we never get to see what's so special about him. He's actually absent for most of the novel, and just randomly appears every once in a while. Other than a couple of melodramatic declarations of love for each other, we don't get to see Lucy and Clare interact very much. Without really understanding Cole's character or their relationship, I couldn't justify all of this drama surrounding them. Ellie is just as underdeveloped: we are told that she and Lucy are best friends, but don't find out much about her character or their friendship either. Again, this made it hard for me to understand all this drama surrounding Lucy's betrayal.Absent parents are something I don't even comment on anymore most of the time because they're so common in YA, but in #scandal, it was just ridiculous. They were on vacation the entire time this was going on, and Lucy was home alone with her sister. I actually really liked reading about Lucy's relationship with her sister, but, like everything else, this storyline wasn't fully developed, either. And I just found it very unrealistic that no one know that the celebrity Jayla Heart is Lucy's sister - if she's the pride of the town, how come no one has tried to figure out what family she belongs to? That whole concept just didn't make sense to me.#scandal had a lot of potential, but with so much going on, basically everything about it fell flat. I'm really disappointed, since like I said, I loved all of Sarah Ockler's previous work. I really hope her next book will be as strong as her previous ones, rather than another melodramatic, underdeveloped mess like #scandal.
