By Monsterella Reviews Carl lost his parents to a drunk driver when he was only 15 years old, he was then sent to live with his uncle in Rachel, NV. Carl's uncle is a man of few words whose best friends are Wild Turkey and Jim Beam. Living out in the desert in the middle of nowhere in a "tin can", two trailers that were pieced together, with an uncle who is never around is hard for a young man who grew up in Chicago with two very loving parents. Thankfully he has is telescope to get him through the nights, a Christmas gift from his parents many years ago.Carl finds peace in looking to the stars and mapping them out, knowing that there has to be other forms of life in this vast universe. He regularly daydreams about the planets and stars, which in his new school makes him an outcast. He does have one good friend, Mark, who as captain of the football team is able to offer some protection and regular conversation. And proves to be an asset when things get rough. Mark helps Carl in a multitude of situations throughout the story, which without him would have been absolutely unbearable. One day everything Carl ever dreamed of walks through the door of his classroom in the form of Grace, a new girl just joining the highschool. Grace and Carl quickly become friends and even become boyfriend and girlfriend. Through this newly formed relationship Carl learns many valuable things, including life does exist beyond Earth. Carl is put to the test when Grace and her family are in harms way. He has to find a way to save them from the evilness that is buried inside a few members of the Army. Can he help save them and if he does will he ever see Grace again? These are two very important questions that only after you read this amazing story by J.S. Frankel will you find out.

The book is funny, suspenseful, surprising, and romantic, with a satisfying ending. The first person narrative is told through the voice of seventeen year old Carl Thornton, a young man who has unimaginable responsibility thrust upon him. If you remember the pain of high school, the first time you kissed a girl and fell in love, the feeling of being young and alive, this book is for you. If you enjoy young adult/science fiction writing with romance, suspense, and humor, this book is for you. Carl Thornton reminds me a bit of Odd Thomas, the character from the wonderful series by Dean Koontz. Put this one on your summer reading list. You'll be glad you did.
